It was such an honor to be a part of this familiarization tour to Channapatna organized by @indiatourism_bengaluru as a part of the Prime Minister's Dekho Apna Desh, Aatma Nirbhar Bharat and vocal for local initiatives.
Janapada Loka in Ramanagara district, Karnataka is a 15 acre lush green campus with different types of indoor and outdoor museums dedicated to showcase the folk culture of Namma karnataka.
It also houses a wide array of ancient rural artifacts depicting the essence of folk literature, music, dance, festivals, sculpture and lifestyle.

Channapatna Toys;
Channapatna in Ramanagara district of Karnataka is famous for its wooden toys.
These toys are made mainly with a specific wood called as Aale Mara or the ivory wood and colored using vegetable dyes that are nontoxic which make it environment-friendly.
We got a chance to visit one of the toy factory in Channapatna. And it was so fascinating to see the entire process of toy making.

Jaggery is known as Bella in Kannada. The place where jaggery is made is known as alemane across karnataka. The video was filmed at Jaggery making unit at Mandya. Jaggery is a traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar consumed in South Asia, Southeast Asia and some other countries in Asia and the Americas. It is a concentrated product of cane juice without separation of the molasses and crystals, and can vary from golden brown to dark brown in colour. Ancient scriptures on Ayurveda mention various medicinal uses based on method of preparation and age.
The cut and cleaned sugarcane is crushed and the extracted cane juice is collected in a large vessel. A certain quantity of the juice is transferred to a smaller vessel for heating on a furnace.
The vessel is heated for about an hour. Dried wood pulp from the crushed sugarcane is traditionally used as fuel for the furnace. While boiling the juice, lime is added to it so that all the wood particles rise to the top of the juice in a froth, which is skimmed off. Finally, the juice is thickened. The resulting thick liquid is about one-third of the original volume.
This hot liquid is golden. It is stirred continuously and lifted with a spatula to observe whether it forms a thread or drips while falling. If it forms many threads, it has completely thickened. It is poured into a shallow flat-bottomed pan to cool and solidify. The pan is extremely large to allow only a thin coat of this hot liquid to form at its bottom, so as to increase the surface area for quick evaporation and cooling. After cooling, the jaggery becomes a soft solid that is molded into the desired shape.
The quality of jaggery is judged by its colour; brown means it is higher in impurities and golden-yellow implies it is relatively pure. Due to this grading scale, coloured adulterants are sometimes added to jaggery to simulate the golden hue.
Jaggery is used as an ingredient in sweet and savoury dishes in the cuisines of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Iran. For example, a pinch of it is sometimes added to sambar, rasam, and other staples. Jaggery is added to lentil soups (dāl) to add sweetness to balance the spicy, salty, and sour components
Traditional Karnataka sweets, such as paayasa, obbattu (holige) and unday use different kinds of jaggery. A pinch is commonly added to sambar (a.k.a. huLi saaru) and rasam (a.k.a. saaru). Karnataka produces sugar- and palm-based jaggery. The combination of crushed jaggery with ghee is excellent and goes well with chapathi.
Other uses
Other uses include jaggery toffees and jaggery cake made with pumpkin preserve, cashew nuts, peanuts and spices. Jaggery may be used in the creation of alcoholic beverages such as palm wine.
Besides being a food, jaggery may be used (mixed in an emulsion with buttermilk and mustard oil) to season the inside of tandoor ovens.[
Jaggery is used in natural dying of fabric. It is also used in hookahs in rural areas of Pakistan and India.
Organic Jaggery making Process:
In Manufacturing of organic Jaggery taking care from growing of sugar cane. In sugar cane cultivation maximum used only natural organic fertilizers like cow dung.
The difference between organic and commercial jaggery making is mainly in clarification process. In organic jaggery making process used only organic clarificants and little bit of lime to decrease the acidity of juice. So organic jaggery colour having dark when compare with commercial jaggery.

Uncovering the Hidden Treasures of Ramanagara & Channapatna - A Bangalore Travel Vlog!
Channapatnam is also known as the toy town of India where traditional wooden toys are still made and it keeps the tradition alive from the time of Tipu Sultan. We visited the 'Bharat Arts and Crafts' centre and that's where we learnt all about making the toys.
Later in the evening we also visited Ramanagara where the famous 1970s blockbuster movie 'Sholay' was also shot. Unfortunately, we were a little late so couldn't go inside, but I could fly my drone there for a little bit.
Also, it's great to be back in India and back to the city where I started my career a few years back. And while I am in Bangalore, I will be exploring places around the city and make some blogs too. Hope you enjoy them!

Chennakeshava Temple, also referred to as Keshava, Kesava or Vijayanarayana Temple of Belur, is a 12th-century Hindu temple in the Hassan district of Karnataka state, India. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, on the banks of the Yagachi River in Belur also called Velapura, an early Hoysala Empire capital. The temple was built over three generations and took 103 years to finish.
It was repeatedly damaged and plundered during wars, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired over its history. It is 35 km from Hassan city and about 200 km from Bengaluru.
Chennakesava (lit, handsome Kesava) is a form of the Hindu god Vishnu. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and has been an active Hindu temple since its founding. It is reverentially described in medieval Hindu texts, and remains an important pilgrimage site in Vaishnavism.
The temple is remarkable for its architecture, sculptures, reliefs, friezes as well its iconography, inscriptions and history. The temple artwork depicts scenes of secular life in the 12th century, dancers and musicians, as well as a pictorial narration of Hindu texts such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas through numerous friezes.
It is a Vaishnava temple that reverentially includes many themes from Shaivism and Shaktism, as well as images of a Jina from Jainism and the Buddha from Buddhism. The Chennakeshava temple is a testimony to the artistic, cultural and theological perspectives in 12th century South India and the Hoysala Empire rule.
The Belur temple complex along with the nearby Hindu and Jain Temples at Halebidu have been proposed to be listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One of the earliest eateries on the Bengaluru - Mysuru route, Shivalli has recently emerged after an extensive renovation that imparts this 20-year-old popular highway destination a breezy, contemporary vibe that comes as a breath of fresh air in current times. It is heartening to note though that the food remains as traditional as ever, in fact, with some ‘new’ additions seeking to convey to diners the wholesome flavours of the good old days. On a recent drive to Mysuru, I stopped by for a delicious breakfast of nourishing porridge, kuchalakki (boiled rice) ganji, tenginkai haalu (coconut milk) ganji, ragi (finger millet) ambli, and also tasted a scrumptious neer dosa made of the very special Rajamudi rice, and their much-favoured kotte kadubu. Boiled rice, sourced from Kundapur, cooked simply with salt and served with a drizzle of hot ghee. Comforting in its nourishing flavours, the rice retains its form and is soft to the bite, having lent some of its starchy heft to the broth. The hand pounded chutney of green chillies, fresh coconut and rock salt provides a spicy edge to the ganji.

Neer Dosa
The Rajamudi rice lends a brownish tinge to the dose, and also a crusty crunch. The dose is roasted with generous lashings of ghee, ensure you ask for your dose to be kadak. The flavours are quite unlike a traditional neer dose; although enjoyable on its own when hot, the bela kai, jaggery with fresh grated coconut makes for a delicious companion. If you like a touch of spice, there is the chutney too.
