Heading to The Netherlands & Not Sure What to Expect? Well here we go through the top things that tourists should know when they visit The Netherlands.
1. It is The Netherlands, Not Holland. Holland is the name of two counties in The Netherlands.
2. The language of The Netherlands is Dutch, but as a tourist you really do not need to know any Dutch as the Dutch speak English extremely well throughout the country.
3. The Euro is the currency in The Netherlands and you can find ATMs all over the country. Credit cards are widely accepted as well.
4. The Netherlands is a small country with a very well developed transportation network. Therefore you can easily take trains all over the country in a fast and efficient way. Make sure you tap in and out with your tickets as you enter your platforms.
5. Biking is a very popular pastime and way to get around Dutch cities. There are a number of bike rental agencies throughout The Netherlands. Look for one near a train station and rent a bike for the day to explore, or sign up for one of the numerous bike tours around the country.
6. The Netherlands is rather safe for tourists. Do take care with pickpockets and extremely aggressive beggars in Amsterdam's more popular areas. The bike line is for bikes only so watch out unless you want to get hit by a bike and yelled at by a local.
7. Drugs bring a lot of tourists to Amsterdam and the Dutch/German border. If you are going to The Netherlands to experiment with soft drugs make sure you go to a Coffee House they have menus and trained personnel that can help travelers. We do not recommend you do drugs and highly discourage travelers from doing this. However, we do know a number of tourists do go there for that. So please be safe, and speak with the coffee shop attendant about your previous experiences so they can help you.
9. The best things about the Netherlands are the quaint cities and towns like Haarlem, Leiden, Groningen, as well as the larger cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The architecture and museums throughout the country really are outstanding. And yes you will see quite a few windmills as you explore The Netherlands.
10. The food is hearty in The Netherlands, make sure you try a bitter ballen or a traditional pancake or herring from one of the stalls. The market and food halls have tons of great treats for travelers. There are numerous international restaurants all over The Netherlands as well.
11. The Netherlands is not a cheap place to visit, however the prices are on par with the US & other major European destinations. Amsterdam accomodation will be your biggest expense. Therefore you may want to stay outside of Amsterdam to have a cheaper and more Dutch experience.

The Gemeenlandshouse in Maassluis is a picture. On the outside it looks like a castle, on the inside you can see that the best craftsmen were hired for the stained glass windows, the wood carvings and the paintings.
The showpiece is the impressive spiral wooden staircase, one of the most beautiful from the 17th century in our country. The stairs were made by the carpenter's boss Jan de Jonge.

The old town hall of the Dutch city of Maassluis was inaugurated in 1676. The designer is unknown. The building has features of classicism and has a hipped roof with brick corner chimneys and a wooden ridge turret. A herring tube serves as a wind vane. The dormer windows are decorated with pegs, all this to remember that the prosperity of the city is due to fishing ????

Maassluis was founded circa 1340 as a settlement next to a lock (in Dutch: sluis) in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. Originally Maeslandsluys, it was part of Maesland.
During World War II, the working population was transferred to Germany for the war industry. Maassluis' ancient church was hit by allied bombers.

Maassluis is een stad en gemeente in de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. De gemeente heeft een oppervlakte van 10,12 km² (waarvan 1,63 km² water) en telt 33.696 inwoners (1 juli 2021) die Maassluizers worden genoemd.
Maassluis is rond 1340 ontstaan, als nederzetting bij een sluis in een zeewering die tussen de Noordzee en Rotterdam werd aangelegd om overstromingen te voorkomen. Op economisch gebied was aanvankelijk de visserij van belang. In de negentiende eeuw werd de stad wereldberoemd door het sleepvaartbedrijf L. Smit & Co. en het scheepsbergingsbedrijf W.A. van den Tak, die na een fusie bekendstonden als Smit-Tak. In Maassluis is het Nationaal Sleepvaart Museum gevestigd en in de haven ligt de stoomsleepboot Furie. Dit schip sleepte jarenlang houtvlotten over de Oostzee, werd in 1976 door de AVRO aangekocht voor een rol in de televisieserie Hollands Glorie naar het boek van Jan de Hartog, en is sinds 15 februari 1978 eigendom van de Stichting Hollands Glorie.

The 'New Waterway' river' is a busy shipping route since it is the primary access to one of the busiest ports in the world, the Europoort of Rotterdam.
There are no bridges or tunnels across the Nieuwe Waterweg, which is the artificial mouth of the river Rhine.
The ferry leaves every 20 minutes from Maassluis and Rozenburg, and during rush hour every 10 minutes.
The (double-ended) ferryboat Staeldiep from 1970 has a capacity of 39 passenger cars and up to 380 persons.

Op de fiets van West Vlaardingen naar Maassluis. Maassluis is een stad in het westen van Nederland, in de provincie Zuid-Holland. De gemeente had in 2019 32.768 inwoners en beslaat 10,12 km2 (3,91 sq mi) waarvan 1,64 km2 (0,63 sq mi) water. In 1811 kreeg het stadsrechten. Maassluis werd omstreeks 1340 gesticht als nederzetting naast een sluis in de zeekering tussen de Noordzee en Rotterdam. Oorspronkelijk Maeslandsluys, maakte het deel uit van Maesland. In 1489 werd de nederzetting geplunderd. Tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog begon Philips van Marnix, heer van Sint-Aldegonde, met de bouw van een verdedigingsmuur, maar voordat deze voltooid was, veroverden de Spanjaarden deze in 1573 en werd Philips van Marnix gevangengenomen. Een jaar later werd Maeslandsluys geplunderd door muitende Spaanse troepen.

During the Eighty Years' War, Philips of Marnix, lord of Sint-Aldegonde, started to build a defense wall but before its completion, the Spanish captured it in 1573 and Philips of Marnix was taken prisoner. In deze vlogs ben ik te gast in het Zuid-Hollandse havenstadje Maassluis. Een verrassend leuke bestemming voor een dagje uit heb ik ervaren.
Mijn stadsgids is Edwin Broekhart en hij is van de historische vereniging van Maassluis en stadsgids van 'Ervaar Maassluis'
Deze man weet zoveel te vertellen over de historie en is heel interessant. Vooral om het verleden van de Maassluis waar vroeger ook een levendige handel was in de havens. De laatste jaren hebben ze hier een ware opleving meegemaakt en is ook de binnenstad aan het floreren met leuke winkels en horeca. In deze eerste vlog van 2 delen zie je vooral het historische verhaal. In de vlog van volgende week gaan we meer het stadcentrum in.

Na een complete metamorfose van mijn brandweercamper, waar vele uurtje werk in hebben gezeten is het nu tijd om de hort op te gaan met deze 40 jaar oude Mercedes LF 409.
37 jaar lang heeft deze sympathieke rode bus ???? dienst gedaan bij de vrijwillige brandweer in het dorpje Herdorf in Duitsland.
En nu hij gepensioneerd is krijgt ie een hoofdrol in mijn vlogs!
De aankomende tijd trek ik er op uit de Provincie in! Want Nederland is zo mooi!

In een tocht van 5 dagen zeil ik van Herkingen via Volkerak, Haringvliet, Dordtse Kil, Oude Maas en Nieuwe Waterweg naar Maassluis en vervolgens weer terug via Noordzee, Slijkgat, Haringvliet en Volkerak. In dit deel 1 vaar ik van Herkingen naar het haventje van Willemsoord bij de Moerdijkbruggen.
