History
The settlement in the Duchy of Styria was first documented in 1227. The minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein in his 1265 poem Frauendienst mentioned Murzuslage, which he passed on his journey from Venice to Vienna. In 1360 the Habsburg duke Rudolf IV confirmed the inhabitants' privilege of iron production, competing with the town of Leoben.
In 1854 the Semmering railway opened, by which the Austrian Southern Railway company provided direct access to Vienna, largely promoting the local economy. The Bleckmann steel mill was founded in 1862, it is today part of Böhler-Uddeholm. A railway museum exhibits a collection of steam locomotives, associated equipment and rolling stock.
In the late 19th century, the mountainous Semmering area was the site of the first alpine skiing attempts in Central Europe, which made it one of the oldest ski resorts of Austria, documented by the world's largest skiing and winter sports museum. Mürzzuschlag received town privileges in 1923.
1931 Workers' Olympiad
On February 5–8, 1931 the second winter Workers' Olympiad organised by the Socialist Workers' Sport International was held in the town. The games were larger (both in number of participants and spectators) than the 1932 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York, United States.

Driver’s Eye View of Austria’s legendary “Semmering Railway” – Payerbach to to Mürzzuschlag
Enjoy the view normally reserved for the driver as we travel over the first mountain railway in Europe to employ standard gauge track. The railway was constructed between 1848 and 1854 by some 20,000 workers featuring 14 tunnels (among them the 1,431 m summit tunnel), 16 viaducts (several two-storey), along with numerous attractive stone bridges. Our train has to tackle 2.5% gradients and negotiate curves as tight as 190m radius, a real challenge for any train. The railway is so remarkable that it has been added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Please sit back and join me for a ride over this highly scenic Alpine railway.

Steiermark, English Styria, has an area of 6,327 square miles (16,387 square km). Upper Steiermark extends in the north from the Limestone Alps to the eastern groups of the Central Alps, embracing the valleys of the Mur, Mürz, Salza, and Upper Enns rivers. The Lower Steiermark upland and hill country consists of the middle Mur Valley with the Grazerfeld “plain” in the centre; the Koralpe and Packalpe rising above 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) in the west; and a gravel, loam-covered hill country in the east.
Ethnically, Steiermark is German. Most inhabitants are Roman Catholic. Ancient folklore, song, and dance are preserved in the mountainous areas and the gray-green Steiermark suit is almost an Austrian national costume. The principal urban centres are Graz, the capital, Leoben, Kapfenberg, Bruck, Eisenerz, Knittelfeld, Köflach, Mürzzuschlag, and Fohnsdorf.

Von Gloggnitz kommend fahren wir auf der Semmering Schnellstraße S6 Richtung Semmering, zweigen dann aber vor dem Schnellstraßen-Tunnel auf die Landesstraße ab, um die Passhöhe in 984m Seehöhe zu erreichen!
Anschließend fahren wir talwärts und kommen nach wenigen Kilometern wieder zurück auf die S6, auf der wir bald an unserem Ziel Mürzzuschlag an- bzw. vorbeikommen!
Du sitzt virtuell hinter dem Lenkrad und fährst selber!

Semmering Railway - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Semmering Railway is one of the world's first true mountain railways, and runs about 40 kilometres between Gloggnitz and Murzzuschlag. Incredibly, for a mountain railway built in the 1840s, it's still largely in use today, with its fascinating mix of curved viaducts, iron bridges, tunnels and covered galleries. We used the modern train to journey between Graz and Vienna, though unfortunately it was difficult to actually see the engineering from on the train itself.

The Semmering Railroad is a remarkable alpine railway line that has been operating in Austria for a hundred and fifty years.Construction of a railroad across mountain terrain posed a major problem but the Semmering Mountain Railway that embarked from Payerbach overcame all obstacles. One of the most impressive architectural achievements of the railroad is the two hundred and twenty seven metre long and twenty four metre high Schwarza Viaduct. The railway line to the Semmering Pass contains sixteen viaducts, more than a hundred bridges and fifteen tunnels. A huge quantity of manpower was used to create it with twenty thousand workers engaged to complete the daunting task. However, the line was inaugurated after only six years of construction. Steam trains were eventually replaced by electric trains but the railway itself has hardly changed at all and continues to form part of a fascinating and irresistible combination of both technology and Nature.

Die Semmering Schnellstraße S 6 ist eine Schnellstraße in Österreich und eine wichtige Nord-Süd-Verbindung. Sie beginnt am Knoten Seebenstein mit der Süd Autobahn (A 2) und führt über den Semmering-Pass nach Mürzzuschlag. Im Anschluss folgt sie der Mürz bis zum Knoten Bruck an der Mur mit der Brucker Schnellstraße (S35). Der letzte Abschnitt verläuft entlang der Mur bis zum Knoten St. Michael mit der Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) wo die S 6 in die Murtal Schnellstraße (S 36) einmündet.
Mit einer Länge von 105 km ist sie die längste österreichische Schnellstraße. In Verbindung mit der S 36 und der S 37 stellt sie eine Alternativverbindung zur Süd Autobahn von Wien nach Kärnten dar.
Die S 6 steht straßenverkehrsrechtlich im Rang einer Autobahn und ist vignetten- bzw. mautpflichtig. Der Betrieb und die Instandhaltung erfolgt durch die staatliche Autobahnbetreibergesellschaft ASFINAG.
Von km 45,25 bis km 50,00 verläuft die S 6 exakt auf der Trasse der alten B 17. Vor Fertigstellung einzelner Teilabschnitte der Semmering Schnellstraße wurden die heutigen Landesstraßen parallel zur S 6 als Semmering Ersatzstraße B 306 geführt.
Ein gefährlicher Abschnitt liegt zwischen der Anschlussstelle Leoben-West und dem Knoten St. Michael, da hier schmale Pannenstreifen und enge Kurvenradien vorhanden sind.
Bei großem Besucherandrang zu den Weltcup-Skirennen am Hirschenkogel wird auf niederösterreichischer Seite eine der Fahrbahnen gesperrt und als Parkplatz verwendet, was zu langen Staus führt und die Durchreise behindert.

Mürzzuschlag in winter, Austria
Mürzzuschlag is a town in northeastern Styria, Austria, the capital of the former Mürzzuschlag District. It is located on the Mürz river near the Semmering Pass, the border with the state of Lower Austria, about 85 km (53 mi) southwest of Vienna. The population is 8,684 (1 January 2016). Originally an industrial area, the nearby mountains are today a popular ski resort.

This weeks video finds me in Austria, onboard the OBB Railjet from Graz to Vienna and featuring the spectacular Semmering Railway. Known as the worlds first proper mountain railway, it truly is a beautiful ride through mountain passes, tunnels, bridges and viaducts.
The train itself is really comfortable and I'll show you all classes of travel plus the dining car which I found particularly pleasant.

The Semmering nature, railway and Class bridges 1860s, Austria
The Semmering railway in Austria, which starts at Gloggnitz and leads over the Semmering to Mürzzuschlag, was the first mountain railway in Europe built with a standard gauge track. It is commonly referred to as the world's first true mountain railway, given the very difficult terrain and the considerable altitude difference that was mastered during its construction. It is still fully functional as a part of the Southern Railway which is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways.
