What U Don't  Know About! The Longest River In Western Uganda River..

In the western region, River Rwizi has lost 60 per cent of its water catchment due to degradation by human encroachment and poor agricultural practices. Rwizi, the biggest river in Ankole sub-region, has a catchment of 8,700 square kilometres.

The river is formed by several wetlands downstream that converge or flow into one another to create the Rwizi that serves 14 districts of Greater Ankole area.

There has been debate about the source of River Rwizi with one theory saying it starts from Sheema district while another account traces the origin in the hills of the neighbouring Buhweju district. The river straddles the districts of Sheema, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Rwampara, Mbarara, Isingiro, Kiruhura, Lyantonde, Rakai and Kyotera, among others before it moves down to pour its waters into Lake Victoria.

Kigambira Safari Lodge

The heart of Lake Mburo..
About Kigambira Safari Lodge

The lodge gets its name from Lake Kigambira, one of the five lakes found within Lake Mburo National Park. The lake is in clear view and walking distance of the facility.

Lake Mburo is the biggest lake followed by Lake Kigambira, Kabikwa, Kazuma and Bwara. According to the park warden, Moses Matsiko, all the five lakes share the same water and are only divided by wetlands.

All of them have fish storks making them ideal for spot fishing. The park is managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). “Kigambira is increasing on our tourism business as it brings in more tourists to stay within the park. There are hippos, crocodiles and water birds for tourists to see at the lake,” Moses Matsiko, UWA’s wildlife warden explains.

At its shores, are primates, including black and white calabash monkeys which feed of shoots of palm trees that line Kigambira’s shorelines.

How to get there

Lake Mburo lies between the towns of Masaka and Mbarara, 228 kilometres and about four hours from Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. it can also be reached from Kibale National Park via Ibanda and Rushere and from Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishaka and Mbarara.

Three gates enter the park. Kyanyanshara Gate, is 14 kilometres west of Lyantonde, while one will take nine kilometres leading to get to Nshara Gate and 13 kilometres of a dirt road to Sanga Gate from the trading centre.

What to see, do while in Lake Mburo NP

Lake Mburo National Park is located in South-Western Uganda. It covers an area of 370 square kilometres. It has over 70 species of mammals, including many zebras, 28 giraffes, elands, a lion, buffaloes, hippos, leopards, monkeys, warthogs, 450 bird species and 400 plant species.

The wildlife can be seen on day and night game drives. The eastern shores of Lake Mburo can be explored by boat, departing from a jetty at the lakeside campsite near Rwonyo Rest Camp.

While cruising, you are sure to see hippos, crocodiles, birds like pelicans, finfoot, shoebill herons and fish eagle. You can go on the ‘Salt Lick Walk’ where wildlife can be viewed from a timber observation platform.

You can climb Kigarama Hill from which you will have a panoramic view of Lake Mburo. The park was a hunting area as early as 1935. It turned into a game reserve in 1964. It was gazetted and demarcated as a national park in 1983. Tourists can go on nature walks, escorted by an armed ranger.

Unique aspects

The uniqueness of the facility is its architectural design that blends the African and modern building styles. The roofs are grass thatched, typical of traditional African building styles.

There is a blend of a wooden floor and veranda, rustic furniture and timber in cabins, chests next to the beds and rustic mirrors in the bathrooms. These bring out the African and modern experience and ideas and complement each other.

The roof thatches of the bandas are grey and from afar or vantage points, give an idea of elephant backs as they herd in the bush.
