Luangwa Bridge, Great East Road, Zambia

Luangwa Bridge, along Great East Road is a beautiful construction.
It is a Cable-stayed bridge that is approximately 222metres and was opened in 1968. This is the major bridge that links Lusaka to the Eastern province of Zambia.

I was travelling westward from Chipata to Lusaka in mid-June. The river was less than half its maximum capacity.

Zambian Village Life

While there are a lot of photos floating around of African people, especially African children I've always found that the vast majority of these photos are usually all pretty similar and tell very little about the day-to-days of village life.

During a recent trip to sub-saharan Africa, we had the rare opportunity to spend 6 days in and around my brother's village. David or Nate as I refer to him in the video is about 1/4 of the way through the 2nd year of his deployment with the US Peace Corps - an amazing aid and cultural exchange program through the US Government.

This footage was shot in and around the Luapula Province of northern Zambia and features footage from the area around Chisunka. The lake footage is from Samfya.

I really encourage you all to read David's blogs about his experiences over at and if you're unfamiliar with the US Peace Corps to learn more here:

Video was shot on a Canon 600D/T3i (18-135mm lens) and a Canon Vixia HF200.

Learn more about the adventure at and as always please comment and subscribe!

Let’s Explore Zambia - South Luangwa National Park

Embark on a unique journey of discovery through South Luangwa, known as the “jewel of Zambia’s National parks” and one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Watch elephants rumble through the lush landscape and hundreds of hippos and crocodiles congregate by the Luangwa River and its many oxbow lakes.

Witness nature's drama unfold as predators such as lions, leopards and wild dogs hunt and fight for survival, get up close to herds of herbivores including the endemic Thornicroft's giraffe, Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra, marvel at the region’s prolific birdlife and enjoy Zambia’s spectacular sunsets and breathtaking sceneries.

30 Second Tour of Your Tent at this Remote Zambia Safari Lodge, Old Mondoro.

Where To Stay in the Lower Zambezi?

The intimate bush camp of Old Mondoro, of course. A concept so simple and effortlessly actioned, this lodge provides guests with an authentic and unedited Zambian safari, providing a “back to the bush” atmosphere that centralizes on the wildlife and wilderness experience.

A destination in itself, this African bush camp is owned and operated by award-winning Chiawa Safaris.

Learn more about Old Mondoro here -

With no fences anywhere in camp, this raw and remote Zambia safari lodge, is one of the last true bush camps in Africa, a mutual study in honouring boundaries. The wild animals that live here – elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, and baboon being the most common – occupy the space just as much as the camp and guests do.

Incredible wildlife encounters at this quintessential safari camp are those only found in your wildest dreams. Under the canopy of winterthorn trees and bordering the mighty Zambezi river, wild animals are part of the camp, sharing in your daily routine.

And oftentimes, guests must be picked up at their safari tents by vehicle, as herd of elephants numbering 10 or more can be found throughout the camp at all times during the day.

With just 5 one-bedroom tents and 1 two-bedroom family tent to occupy this Lower Zambezi bush camp, a remote and private atmosphere is provided for each guest.

Each tent holds a romantically-netted king bed (or two large twins) with a view through the wide reed windows either directly onto the Zambezi river or the hyacinth-filled (and equally wildlife-filled) channel weaving through camp. An outdoor bath doubles as a plunge-pool (and occasional Elephant drinking hole) and an open-air shower allows one to revel under the stars each night.

A private deck provides additional seating for afternoon naps, getting lost in a book or just observing the movie-worthy backdrop of the mighty Zambezi or winterthorn trees across the channel, where an endless variety of Zambia wildlife can be seen weaving throughout the shade and cooling off in the water.

Meandering elephant walk in camp throughout the day, to slake their thirst from the channel (or your outdoor bath) or to pick fallen pods from the roof of your bush chalet. These unembellished encounters are what a true lower Zambezi safari experience and authentic Zambia safari lodge should be.

Why Zambia For A Safari?

Many African safari destinations are overcrowded, where the experience is overpromised and underdelivered. A safari in Zambia is none of these things. Only declared as a national park in 1983, it previously served as the private park of the Zambian President. This private use kept the masses of tourists away from Zambia for far longer than many other African safari destinations. Long-standing ivory trade bans and anti-poaching teams have allowed for Zambian wildlife to flourish, leaving Zambia and its unfenced safari lodges open to a pristine and raw wilderness unlike any other in Africa.
