Forests, Flowers, and Waterfalls

Text: Rick Charette

Sun-Link-Sea
A “forest and nature resort,” a privately operated getaway idyll (NT$250 entry fee).

At the upper end of the resort road is at Songlong Rock Waterfall. At the base of a Cinemascope-wide semi-circular cliff is a large, deep green lagoon busy with fish in the water and eye-catching birds above. Two massive mid-lagoon boulders are covered completely with vegetation, trees “impossibly” growing atop their solid-rock bed. The cliff’s base is “gone,” to a height of 30 meters and a depth of 30, a cave now where once soft sandstone was emplaced. A paved pathway takes you along the cliff base and through the gaping hole, and you emerge directly before the waterfall itself, at its base.

Between Sun-Link-Sea and Xitou – Wangyou Forest
Beside County Road 95, a few kilometers from Sun-Link-Sea, you’ll see a large “Wangyou Forest” sign From there, a narrow road leaps up past tea fields, tilted at startling angles. Take the 15-minute huff-and-puff walk up to the forest-entrance path (NT$50 entry), or use one of the privately-operated shuttle vans (NT$200 return). Wangyou Forest is a section of tall-pine forest drowned when the creek that gurgles through was blocked by Taiwan’s infamous 921 Earthquake in 1999.

Le Midi Hotel Chitou
This is a veritable high-mountain hideaway oasis of regal splendor amidst a world of tall trees and rugged mountains. The owners are avid hunters of European-nobility antiques, and eager to show them off. In the lobby and other areas you are regaled with imperial-French furniture, clocks, and other curios collected on hunting forays in Europe. The guestrooms are all spacious and tastefully appointed in modernistic continental European style, with bright nature-evocative green, white, and brown tones predominant. Room rates start at NT$11,000; one dinner and breakfast included

Xiaobantian Bridge
Opened in 2014, this is mountainous Nantou County’s highest extradosed bridge, its roadbed 60 meters up from the valley floor. Its soaring grey towers are shaped like giant bamboo stalks, just like Taipei’s famed Taipei 101 tower. Xiaobantian is home to numerous fetching waterfalls, Dexing Waterfall perhaps the best-known. On the higher reaches of a boulder-strewn Beishi River tributary stream, it has two sections, the upper, 30m high, has carved a cool, calm pool at its base perfect for wading.

Sky Ladder Scenic Area (NT$50 adults)
A well-maintained trail brings you down, down, relentlessly down to the bottom of Taiji Gorge. Moving through thick bamboo forest, among your gorge-bottom rewards will be the Sky Ladder – a suspension-bridge engineering marvel – a sheer-cliff cave-dwelling Earth God temple below it, and Qinglong Waterfall.

BeYoung Garden
On the second floor of a still-operating small inter-town bus station that looks like a set for a 1950s period movie. “Zhushan” literally means “Bamboo Mountain”; the area is renowned for bamboo cultivation and products, bamboo is a key restaurant decorative material, and the chefs make edible bamboo a prominent ingredient. Specially recommended: the “three-cups mushroom bitter-tea range chicken” and “dried bamboo with soy-braised pork” set meals.

麒麟潭 南投縣鹿谷鄉 Ci lin Lake, Lugu Township, Nantou County, Taiwan

WTCU: Want to Catch up AKA Want To C U at Ci lin Lake, Lugu Township, Nantou County, Taiwan to go for a walk, relax, enjoy the tranquility and leisure from admiring the beautiful scenery

The Nantou County Government sought funds from the central government to improve the recreational facilities around Ci Lin Lake in Lugu Township. The water trail at Ci Lin Lake was officially opened. The 130-meter-long footpath connects to the fish-shaped square, allowing the public to enjoy different walks of life. Enjoy the view from different angles.

Ci lin Lake is the secret garden of Lugu, Nantou. Although it is a tourist attraction, few people go around to Ci lin Lake. Therefore, it is not as noisy as ordinary tourist attractions, but has another kind of tranquility and leisure to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Ci lin Lake was opened nearly 160 years ago and is commonly known as Dashuibori. It is located between Dongding Mountain and Ci lin Mountain, where oolong tea is produced, on the way to the Phoenix Valley Bird Garden. The artificial water bank with an area of about 13 hectares was originally used for irrigating farmland. It was later reputed for its beautiful landscape. It is known as one of the eight scenic spots in Nantou. The water here is turquoise, like a bright mirror. Tea trees are planted all over the lake. It is green and pleasing to the eye, full of quiet and elegant rural flavor. There is a flat trail around the lake on the shore of the lake where you can enjoy walking or cycling.

Old Dajia Town

Inform any Taiwan citizen you’ve been to Dajia and you’ll be asked if you visited Dajia Zhenlan Temple, Dajia’s key attraction. Taiwan, an island nation, venerates Mazu – the Goddess of the Sea -- like no other deity. She is worshiped at almost 900 temples. Zhenlan Temple, which dates to the 1700s, is among the most famous and powerful, and the annual Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is the best-known event celebrating her springtime birthday.

All around Dajia Zhenlan Temple are eateries of venerable pedigree that have long been satisfying the needs of pilgrims – and locals – who have come to the temple to fulfill their spiritual needs. Dajia Ma Mianxian (“Dajia Mom Rice Noodles”; 127 Jianggong Rd. / 蔣公路127號), just a minute away on foot, is specially recommended.

The Taichung region has also long been known for high-quality traditional weaving crafts. Visit Dajia’s very last traditional straw-hat shop, Sanyang Mao Di Hang (“Sanyang Hat and Mat Shop”; 48 Jiangong Rd./ 48 建功路), a short walk from Zhenlan Temple.

Gaomei Wetlands

The Gaomei Wetlands, 3000 hectares in area with a seawall stretching 3.5 kilometers facing the Taiwan Strait, is a popular birdwatching hotspot. Members of over 120 species reside here, among the most conspicuous from the heron, ibis, heron, goose, and godwit families.

A long, meandering boardwalk brings you far out into the wetlands, beyond the sedge-grass marsh out into the intertidal zone, putting you just a few feet above the teeming world of busy fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and other tiny local denizens. The birds swoop in when the tide is out, feasting on the exposed buffet. When the tide is out, visitors are permitted to step off the end of the boardwalk in the intertidal zone, where the footing is comparatively firm and the mud thickness limited, to explore the animal goings-on on the mudflats.

Wuqi Fishing Harbor

Wuqi Fishing Harbor is just off the north end of massive Taichung Port. The latter is busy with much, much larger craft. The former’s different draws are enjoyed at varying times of the day.

There’s a lively, raucous daily fish-auction market. Most boats come in during the one or two hours before sunrise, and the scene is cacophonous, to say the least, and photo-captivating. If not a night-prowler, fret not; individual craft continually chug-a-lug in during the day, knowing local buyers punctually appearing right to provide you with unposed photo opps among the weary sailor folk.

Qingshui District

For even better views over the coastal region, head higher up Aofeng Hill to the park area immediately beyond, where two visually enticing architectural works await, Aofeng Jade Bridge and, higher still along the park’s pleasing pathway, Aofeng Hill Viewing Platform. The former is a curving waterway-leaping pedestrian bridge shaped auspiciously like a jade piece, bringing good fengshui. The latter is perhaps the coastal area’s best spot for sunsets and star-viewing.

Nearby, back down on the coastal plain, is the heritage-status Zhao Family Ancestral Residence (476 Zhongshan Rd. /中山路476號), a lyrically pretty traditional courtyard-style residential complex with the green slopes of the mountain spur at its back. Built in the late Qing Dynasty in the old south China style brought over by the ancestors of the Taiwanese, before it is a large pond.

Travel in Taiwan (2015, 7/8)

Wangyou Valley
The sun is blazing as we arrive at a trail in eastern Keelung that will take us down a hill into Wangyou Valley – a rare sight in what is known as Taiwan’s rainy city. Slowly we descend the steps. Coastal plants cover the edges of the trail, their leaves thick and waxy to retain moisture in the salty sea air. Purple-headed thistles spring up among other wildflowers. White trumpet-nosed blooms cling to the steep cliffs. Bulbuls, white-eyes, babblers, and thrushes duck and weave among the dense thickets. Serpent eagles and goshawks soar above a coast that has been ravaged year after year, century after century by typhoons, monsoon rains, and crashing waves.
Peppered, too, amongst the hills are remnants of Keelung’s military past: pillbox guard posts and fortified lookouts peep from the undergrowth, fighting a losing battle against Mother Nature. After climbing to the top of one of the valley’s several peaks, we see the small fishing harbor of Badouzi on the left beyond, while ahead of us stretches the wide expanse of the East China Sea.

Heping Island
To the northwest of Wangyou Valley lies Heping Island. In 1626, the Spanish arrived on this island, declared it Spanish territory, and built a fortification – Fort San Salvador – on the southwestern side. The fort and any traces of the Spanish on Heping Island have, unfortunately, been largely lost to history, but a small snapshot of the island’s colonial years can be seen in the geo park on its northern side. Much like at nearby Yeliu (with its famous Queen’s Head Rock), the main attractions in the park are the divertingly shaped sandstone rocks along the sea’s edge.
Follow the path around the park and you’ll come across the Cave of Foreign Words, a 20-meter-long natural tunnel that pierces a small headland near the eastern edge of the park. Inside the cave there is, purportedly, some 17th-century graffiti left by the Dutch, who took over Fort San Salvador in the 1640s.

Baimiweng Fort
One of several old fortifications perched upon the hilltops around Keelung, Baimiweng commands a spectacular view of both the harbor and the sea. The small, winding lane that leads to the fort is a bit difficult to find, even for Keelungers, says Wang, who, with a painter’s romantic eye, goes on to compare the challenging ascent up the narrow, twisting road to the journey up to the citadel of Évora Monte in Portugal. Reaching the fortifications, you’re confronted with a spectacular vista and four large semi-circular gun emplacements, each of which was capable in its time of hosting a 5.65-meter-long cannon able to fire a steel shell 8.8 kilometers at enemy battleships. Though the current fortifications date back only to the early 1900s, Wang writes that fortifications have been built on this location since the 17th-century colonial conflicts between the Spanish and the Dutch, a fact attested by the fort’s alternate name, Holland Castle. “From here the night view of the harbor is breathtaking,” Wang writes, “and on the other side, far out to sea, you can see freighters slowly entering the harbor, while further away still you can see the sun setting.”

Central Keelung & Harbor
As a busy, working container port, central Keelung is a churning organism of cranes and freight containers, trundling cargo ships and busy-bee tugboats. The narrow streets and alleys that creep out from the narrow central harbor can become, especially on weekends, breathtakingly crowded – a situation abetted by the fact that the nearby Miaokou Night Market is one of the most famous in Taiwan.

Jiji Town 集集鎭 - Nantou County, Taiwan | Traveler Ni

Jiji (Chinese: 集集; pinyin: Jíjí; Wade–Giles: Chi2-chi2; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Chi̍p-chi̍p) or Chichi is an urban township located in the west central portion of Nantou County, Taiwan. Jiji is the smallest of Taiwan's townships by area.

The township is a popular destination on the Jiji Railway Line. In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan.

Han Chinese from Zhangzhou began arriving in the area in 1771. The name originates from Chiv-Chiv, a phrase in the Formosan languages.

During the Japanese era (1895–1945), Jiji was a collection and shipping export point for camphor produced in the surrounding areas. By 1940, it was administrated as Shūshū Town (集集街), Niitaka District (新高郡), Taichū Prefecture (now Taichung.) Jiji township then encompassed a much larger area that included the present-day Shuili Township.

In 1946, Niitaka District was renamed Yushan District (玉山區), Taichung County, and Jiji contemporaneously became a township. In 1950, Shuili Township was separated from Jiji. During World War II, a U.S. bomber was shot down by Japanese artillery, killing four airmen.[citation needed] The township was the epicenter of the eponymous and devastating 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake.

As of December 2016, Jiji was home to a total population of 11,035, including 5,745 males and 5,290 females. Historically, the population peaked at 16,395 in 1970, and has fallen steadily since then. By contrast, the number of households grew from 2,772 in 1970 to a high of 4,376 in 2014, falling slightly to 4,308 by 2016.

Jiji is bordered by Jhongliao to the north, Mingjian to the west, Jhushan and Lugu to the south, and Shuili to the east. The Zhuoshui River flows westward along the south border of the township. Jiji Township has a total area of 49.72 square kilometers. The lowest point in the township is 230 m above sea level and its highest point is Big Jiji Mountain (集集大山) at 1392 m above sea level. The township is rather mountainous and is surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Trip to Xitou Natural Educational Area, Nantou, Taiwan

Sitou is located in the Phoenix hill of Lugu village, and is embraced by mountains from three sides. Its name is derived from the Chinese meaning: the origin of the river (Bei-Shi River). Sitou has plenty of rains, and is cool and moist all the year round. Therefore, it is one of the most famous resort spots in summer and the most romantic place for new couples to spend their honeymoons. Sitou is part of the experimental forest belonging to the National Taiwan University, and here grows cedars, Chamaecyparis obtuse, red spruces , Phyllostachys edulis, and many other different kinds of trees. Except for a small well-preserved natural broad-leaves forest, most parts of this area have been developed and cultivated purposely. Generally speaking, the feature of the forest here is beautiful and tidy. Here you can visit the unique pure Ginkgo forest, the rare plant of redwood, the divine tree 46 meter high and 16 meter broad and with an age approaching 3,000, Youth's Activity Center, birds observing footpath, hotels, restaurants, camping area and so on. The University Pond, one of the representative sightseeing spots in Sitou, with an area of 0.5 chings and a depth of 10 meters, has limpid water and is a good place for taking pictures. There are over 7,000 varies of birds available in Sitou, which makes this place a good one for birds observing. River Blacks, White-ears Thrush, Redhead Warblers, Shao-Yen Thrush are representatives of low and middle elevation in Taiwan. Buildings in Shi-To are made of wood and have a smell of natural harmony.
