How Chaotic Are Festivals in China? // This Is China

We attended the Longquan Peach Blossom Festival (龍泉桃花節) on the outskirts of Chengdu. It happens once a year, around mid-March, when the peach trees that cover the hillside flower. Sounds pretty nice, right?

There's something you should know about China -- it has about 1.3 billion people living in it. When a festival hits, the crowds are intense. This was our first Chinese festival, and it might be our last. There were just so many people that it was hard to enjoy it.

That being said, I think the festival is a great idea. If you can visit the Longquan Peach Flower Festival during the week the crowds will be smaller, and you'll surely have a much better time. Check out this link to get more info about visiting:

As for us, the day is sort of a blur... I remember a lot of bodies pressing up against me. There was a ton of noise. I think I may have seen a tree with some flowers on it... I can't be sure.

I live in China, so if you're interested in visiting the country, or even living there, visit my website. It also has tons of information about other destinations across the world.

Huanglongxi, the thousand-year-old ancient town | Chengdu, 2023 | China

Huanglongxi ancient town, situated in the southeast of Shuangliu District in Chengdu, China, which marks the convergence of three counties, cradled by two rivers (Fu and Luxi rivers). Muma Mountain and Er'es Mountain stand sentinel across the water.

Boasting a history spanning over 2,100 years, its landscape features one lake, two rivers, three temples, seven streets, and nine alleys.

The streets and alleys of Huanglongxi Ancient Town retain the Qing Dynasty's traditional fishbone road network. Streets, paved entirely with stone slabs, stretch about three meters wide. On either side, row-style residential shops with front and back spaces from the Qing Dynasty era still stand.

Here, 76 well-preserved residences and three courtyards grace the landscape. Key cultural relics such as Jinhua Nunnery, Sanxian Yamen, and the ancient stage hold sway. Meanwhile, a tapestry of folk customs, from fire dragons to Fuhe boatmen's chants, floating river lanterns, and night watch traditions, enliven the town.

A trove of 31,200 square meters of traditional structures endures, including 13,700 square meters of quintessential Qing Dynasty wooden architecture, distinguished by their unique attributes and paramount preservation value.

One street, three temples, three counties, and one government office crystallize as the ancient town's most renowned cultural legacy. Huanglongxi's allure has radiated through the ages, with Buddha's birthday heralding a continuous stream of pilgrims and visitors, painting a vivid portrait of prosperity.

Along Huanglongxi's main Street, spanning over 200 meters from north to south, Gulong Temple, Chaoyin Temple, and Zhenjiang Temple grace the landscape. These ancient sanctuaries, cloaked by sprawling ancient trees, have become the emblematic vista of Huanglongxi Ancient Town. Ancient streets, temples, trees, dwellings, piers, Buddha caves, weirs, government offices, customs, folk traditions, and cliff tombs constitute the town's ten world-renowned ancient marvels.

Of course, food is indispensable in Huanglongxi. Sesame cake, pearl bean curd, charred pork elbow, scrambled eggs with wild vegetables, braised yellow spicy diced dices, vegetarian stir-fried wild gray vegetables, etc. are all traditional delicacies here, whether they are white and moist in color, The delicate taste of pearl bean curd, fat but not greasy, and sweet and fresh roasted pork elbows all leave a deep impression on people. In addition to these traditional delicacies, various Internet celebrity delicacies are also scattered in the streets and alleys of the ancient town, allowing people to feast their eyes as well as their mouths.

There is also an allusion to the origin of the name of Huanglongxi Ancient Town. The upper reaches of Luxi River originate from Longquan Mountain, and most of the streams that flow down to form a river are mountain streams. During the flood season, streams become laden with large amounts of sediment and appear yellow in color. Jinjiang water from the Fu River originates from the Minjiang River and is clear and transparent. The intersection of the two rivers appears distinct. It is precisely because the Luxi River carrying sediment flows into the Fu River by subduction, it looks like a dragon soaring from a distance. The local people even vividly describe it as Yellow Dragon Crossing the Qingjiang River, which has been passed down from generation to generation. With the oral transmission of myths and legends, over time, people felt that this was a blessed place where the Yellow Dragon appeared, so they called it Huanglong Creek. Of course, this is just one of its allusions. Some people think that it is because the Yellow Dragon saw Wu Yang. During the incident, a tripod in the shape of a dragon and elephant was cast and sunk into the water, etc. These undoubtedly added to the mystery of the ancient town.

A stick of Noodle, also known as Changgen Noodles, are a famous traditional snack with Han characteristics in Huanglongxi Ancient Town, Chengdu, Sichuan during the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The characteristic of Yi Yi Yi Noodles is that there is only one noodle in a pot, one noodle can hold a bowl, and one noodle can be as long as you want. The pastry chef was about one step away from the pot and pulled out the plated noodles from the oil basin with his left hand. The thumb and index finger cooperate with each other, and the right hand is gently pulled out to stretch the finger-thick noodles. The slender noodles are like dragons and phoenixes dancing in the air, stretching up and down, and falling into the water, which is breathtaking.

Exploring Shuhe Ancient Town | The Amazing Tour Attraction In Lijiang, Yunnan, China | 束河古镇 | 丽江

Shuhe is also one of the first settlements of Naxi ancestors.

It is not only a very important town in the Tea-horse Road that leads to Tibet, but also a famous cobbler town.

The cobblers here are as skillful as those in Italy.

The leather products that they make are the best seller in Tea-horse Road.

Because of trading activities along this road, the Naxi people gradually gave up the nomadic life and settled for farming and later started to do business.

Shuhe was built along the mountainside and faces the river.

There are two rivers on each side of it that go through the whole, village. Channels were dug so that the water would pass by each house.

Rivers, channels and roads make a dense web and link the town in a tight structure just like a honeycomb.

People use stones in the nearby mountains to make the walls of their houses. Compared to those in the ancient old town, the houses here are even more natural.

Right in the middle of Shuhe, there is a square market, which is called Shuhe Square Market.

Observing closely, you will find that the one in the old town was built totally according to this one. Walking in Shuhe, you will have the feeling that this ancient town of Shuhe is the model of the Old Town while the Old Town is tension and development of Shuhe.

Shuhe is also called Town of Springs. About one hundred meters north of the Shuhe Square Market, there is the waterhead of the streams here. It is Jiuding Dragon Pool.

The water is clean and transparent; the fountains spurt out day and night. The Naxi hold the spring as holy. Beside it, people built a Longquan Temple (Dragon Spring Temple) to enshrine and worship the founder of cobbler handicraft.

Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province.

It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans.

A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

Shuhe Ancient Town, also named Longquan Village (which literally means dragon spring village), is located in the north of Lijiang Ancient City.

In Naxi language, Shuhe means “a village at the foot of a peak”. As the earliest habitation for Naxi ancestors, Shuhe Ancient Town is regarded as a living specimen of the Naxi ancestors’ transition from an agriculture civilization to a commercial culture.

Similar to Lijiang Ancient City, Shuhe Ancient Town is surrounded by a murmuring river and interlaced with smooth flagging.

It is a compact village hidden in the forest, and it lies near mountains and rivers. It is a more peaceful, smaller version of Lijiang Ancient City.

Qinglong Bridge has a history of more than 400 years; it is the landmark building in Shuhe Ancient Town.

The entire bridge was built with stones, and is 25 meters (82 ft) long, 4.5 meters (15 ft) wide and 4 meters (13 ft) high. In early spring, the old bridge is decorated by verdant willows, which form a famous scenic spot in Shuhe.

Sifang Street, a market in the center of Shuhe village, covers an area of about 250 square meters (2,691 sq. ft). It is very lively during market days. Visitors can buy many leather products at the market. Surrounding the market are shops, all of which have archaic wooden facades.

Travelers can buy various handicrafts here, such as unique ornaments and costumes reflecting ethnic styles.

Along the street about 100 meters (328 ft.) away is the fountainhead of a river surrounding the ancient town, a deep pool named Long Pool (Dragon Pool). From Long Pool, the overflowing water winds through the village and the bubbling sounds can be heard miles away.

The locals regard this as a sacred spring, and built Beiquan Temple (North Spring Temple) here as a place to pray. Master leatherworking is enshrined in Sansheng Palace, which is the most unique part of the temple.

----------------------------------
Location:
----------------------------------
About 4 kilometers northwest from Lijiang Ancient City.
----------------------------------
How to get there
----------------------------------
1. Daily shuttle buses depart from Lijiang Ancient City to Shuhe Ancient Town, a great convenience for travelers.
2. Visitor also can take a taxi there, which takes about 20 minutes, or they can bike, which takes about 1.5 hours.
----------------------------------
Best time to there:
----------------------------------
The peak period for visiting Shuhe Ancient Town is from May to October. Actually, Shuhe is worth visiting during any season, so if you do not want to experience a crowded scene, avoiding that period might be a good option.

Nantou City Audio Guide-Ancient Well in Longquan Village

In downtown area of Nantou City, there is a 100-year natural spring hidden on Longquan Street, which is located behind the Longquan Temple. This ancient well is well-preserved and its water is clear with appropriate temperature. Legend has it that this well is where the local Pingpu people of Nantou community used to dig for water while they were living here.
The so-called “Nantou community” indicates the local Pingpu tribes. When Han people came to Caotun for reclamation in the early days, they heard that the local tribes living in the northern part of Caotun called themself “Tausa-bata,” which is transliterated as “Beitou community.” Based on this finding, the Han people named the Pingpu people who lived in the southern part of Caotun “Nantou community.” Following the naming convention, the well was called “the well of aboriginals” back then.
To date, this ancient well still supplies abundant water, making it a perfect spot for local people to wash clothes and vegetables, as well as chatting and meeting each other. In the central business district of Nantou City where streets are lined with stores and shops, it is rare to have such ancient well that is still supplying water. The existence of this well not only creates a serene atmosphere in a hustle and bustle area, but also adds a touch of nostalgia.
This well is highly valued by Nantou County Government and several improvements are about to begin. After several site surveys, the local government has promised to make a better cover slab for the well, to redesign the fences and to improve the water channel, hoping to transform this well into a new bright spot among attractions in Nantou City and to create a new well trip for slow travel.
