ENDUIMET Wildlife Management Area Tanzania

The Small Garden of Eden, home to biggest elephants in East Africa.
LOCATED in Longido District on the Basin land of the western foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Enduimet Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was established in 2003 with land allocated by nine villages covering an area of 1,282 kilometres.

The Enduimet WMA shares its border with Kilimanjaro National Park to the southeast, Engarusai Open Area to the west and the Kenyan border to the north.

Enduimet WMA sets a good example of a community based conservation area where local Maasai pastoralists are benefiting from tourism and conservation initiatives.

The conserved area occupies the Ol Molog and Tinga Tinga wards in Longido district in Arusha region and is occupied wholly by Maasai pastoral communities. Its operation office is located at Ol Molog ward in on the closer slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Engasurai Open Area is the main attractive geographical feature within Enduimet WMA where animals frequently move to in search for water and hunting ground for predators.

Visiting a Masai Village in Tanzania

A visit to a Maasai village is almost inevitable when travelling to Kenya and/or Tanzania. Maasai (not Masai) is the correct spelling. Maasai means people that speak ‘maa’. Masai is an incorrect spelling the British settlers used, and remains in current use.

Maasai people are a ‘Neolithic’ tribe, originating from the Nile / South Sudan region. Although they are one of the youngest tribes to move into the East Africa region, they are one of the most well-known tribes because of their bright red clothing and adornments they wear.

The number of Maasai people in Kenya is estimated to be approximately 800,000, with about the same number living in Tanzania. Most Masai people live in the area between Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania; an area that hosts world-famous national parks and game reserves, such as the Serengeti National Park (Tanzania), Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Tanzania) and Masai Mara Game Reserve (Kenya) are located.

The Maasai are nomadic pastoralists, meaning they keep herds of livestock all year round on a system of free-range grazing. Wandering in bands throughout the year, Masai subsist almost entirely on the meat, blood, and milk of their herds.

A Maasai Village (also called a kraal), consists of a large circular thornbush fence around a ring of mud-dung houses, holds four to eight families and their herds. Maasai are usually polygamous. When a woman marries, she does not only just marry her husband, but his entire age group as well. Traditionally, a Maasai husband was expected to give up his bed to a visiting male guest. This custom is now disappearing, but it is not uncommon for the woman of the house to join the guest in bed if she so desires.

Maasai society is strongly patriarchal and almost all major decision involving the tribe are decided by the village elders, a egalitarian style.

The main role of Maasai women is to cook and take care of the children, who are introduced to raising cattle as soon as they’re able to walk. The role of Maasai men is determined on the age and gender of each individual Maasai man are born and raised to be warriors. Early on boys duties are to take care of their livestock and once they are between the ages of twelve and fifteen years they take the rite of passage to become a warrior.

Namanga Hills Hike & Border Post Tour

We are back again, with a tour of the Kenya- Tanzania border post and a hike to the Ol Donyo Orok/Namanga Hills.
I've always wanted to hike these hills and this was an opportunity I couldn't have passed.

The scenery here is just something else. Very beautiful

The askaris at the TZ entry point are friendly and were good in letting us take photos there.

The sunset was magical but I didn't find a nice spot to capture it, but I will definitely go back for another shot.

Maasai Boma near Arusha, Tanzania.

Maasai Tribe - Boma

The Maasai people don’t live in villages. They live in family compounds called “Boma”. A Boma is a homestead headed by one male, consisting of houses for each of his wives and their children. Maasai are polygamous, and Maasai women build their huts in husband’s Bomas. The final number of these huts depends on how big the family becomes.

I visited such a community of Maasai people near Arusha in Tanzania with my camera. It was just the beginning of the exploration Tanzania and our small group of travelers was fully supplied with water for the whole trip. Being advised to hydrate ourselves with minimum 3 liters of water per day we realized quickly that it is much too much for us. So, we decided to leave the chief of Maasai community the half of our supply. In fact it was just unnecessary baggage for us and our jeeps before Safari.

How surprised I was when after coming back to England I received an email from Arusha. That was a message from Tanzania awaiting me with grateful thanks for the biggest water supply the village ever had. The leader of Maasai community we visited walked to Arusha almost 40 km to send this email to me. I will never forget the experience with Maasai tribe.

The lesson from this experience I took is unforgettable.
What is average for us, people from developed countries, is sometimes an unaffordable dream for others.
