St. George Monastery Wadi Qelt Israel

A Road trip from Israel to Palestine ,One of the most beautiful orthodox church the St. George's Monastery in wadi Qelt.Palestine roadtrip to Israel

The monastery is located in Israel's Judean Desert in Wadi Qelt (Nahal Prat or Kelt River Canyon), a valley in the Israel-controlled eastern West Bank. The valley runs from Jerusalem to Jericho and the monastery is about 9km from Jericho and 20km from Jerusalem. The monastery appears to be clinging to the side of a steep cliff. The monastery is one of the most magical sights you will see on your travels. It will amaze religious travelers and those interested in history, archeology, architects and sociology. The monastery blends into the rock face and overlooks a lush garden with Cyprus and olive trees in the deep and narrow gorge of Wadi Qelt. The monastery is one of five monasteries in the Judean Desert.
One of the most beautiful church.

Lod Railway Station Israel - a train enters the station

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The story of the church where St George is buried. Lod. Israel .

An important and personal request from me (followed by information about the site): unfortunately as a tour guide I have not worked since February 2020. Please subscribe to my site and let me show you the Holy Land through it
I would be happy if you could share the site with your other friends who are interested in the rich and sacred history of the place

Church of Saint George
Church of Saint George is one of the two major shrines for the fourth-century Christian martyr Saint George. The church is located in Lod, Israel. The current church, built in 1870, shares space with the El-Khidr Mosque (الخضر Al-Khidr, often associated with Saint George).

History
Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem received permission from the Ottoman authorities to build a church on the site of a previous basilica. The church is built over a ruined 12th-century Crusader structure and occupies the north end of the nave and left-hand aisle of the earlier church, from which two apses survive - which, contrary to the normal rule, face north rather than east.

The Ottoman authorities stipulated, that part of the plot be made available for a mosque. Mosque far older than rebuilt 19th-century Greek church is Mamluk from the 14th century. Consequently, the current Church of St. George incorporates only the northeast corner of the Byzantine basilica. The remains of the Byzantine basilica including its are incorporated into the mosque; the Crusader church took a different, if adjacent, location. Some of it, too, is part of the mosque complex. The prayer hall of the adjacent mosque contains a column that once stood in the nave of the basilica.

Saint George, also George of Lydda, was a Christian who is accepted as a saint in Christianity and Islam. According to traditional rumors, he was a soldier in the Roman army. His parents were Christians of Greek origin. His father, Gerontius, was a Cappadocian serving in the Roman army. His mother Polikronya was a Christian from the city of Lod in Israel. Saint George was a soldier of Cappadocian Greek origins, a member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian, who was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints and megalomartyrs in Christianity, and he has been especially venerated as a military saint since the Crusades.

In hagiography, as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and one of the most prominent military saints, he is immortalised in the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. His memorial, Saint George's Day, is traditionally celebrated on 23 April. (See under Feast days below for the use of the Julian calendar by the Eastern Orthodox Church.)

England, Ethiopia, Georgia, and the Autonomous Communities of Catalonia and Aragon in Spain, and several other nation states, cities, universities, professions and organisations all claim George as their patron.

Five years – and a pandemic – after breaking ground at Lod, the Shelby White & Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center is inaugurated to house the massive sea-themed floor
One of the most beautiful treasures of Roman-era Holy Land — the seafaring-themed Lod mosaic — was restored to its home port on June 27.

Given a hero’s welcome in the form of a dedicated museum, the late 3rd century– early 4th century mosaic is now housed in the newly constructed Shelby White & Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center near Ben Gurion Airport.

The first section of the richly colorful mosaic was discovered accidentally during salvage excavations in 1996 under a central city square in Lod. Another section was uncovered under what appears to be a large Roman villa from the Byzantine era in 2015. Surprisingly, a third section was also discovered under the villa in 2018 during construction of the museum.

Made up of several panels, the Lod mosaic is some 17 meters long and 9 meters wide — approximately 180 square meters in area (some 1,940 square feet).

Among the colorful illustrations found on the mosaic are boats with oars, and animals including elephants, lions, birds, fish, and crustaceans. There is also plant life and flowers, vases and geometric patterns.

The combination of mosaics, artifacts and architectural evidence such as frescos from the late 3rd century–early 4th century Roman period uncovered in the excavations provides evidence of Mediterranean luxury that characterized the Roman empire, said Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Amir Gorzalczany, who directed one of the excavations following the discovery of a new section.

A Roman mosaic of superb iconographic and conservative quality, a real archaeological jewel. There are two main themes typical of the Roman mosaic represented here, which describe the characteristic of the client of the work. The first concerns the fish and the second the exotic animals of the African continent. Two vessels from the Roman era are also represented. The theme of fish still maintains a strong evocative power of the abundance of the sea which is well suited to an environment intended for meals and which had to help emphasize the comfort of the landlord. In fact, in the Roman world, fish was considered a refined dish, whose presentation at banquets helped to underline the wealth of the landlord, so much so that here the owner was able to flaunt his possibilities not only by offering diners fresh fish in multiple variety, but even representing their own vessels. the subject of the floor mosaic also represents animals that were considered exotic for the Roman environment of the third century. These after a great catch, not hunting, were loaded onto cargo ships to be shipped to the games in the amphitheaters of the empire in Rome. However, a typical theme of the Roman mosaic representation is missing, the human figure, perhaps in compliance with precise religious rules. So summing up the owner of the villa could be a rich shipowner who made his fortune trading ferocious animals between Africa and Rome and who among other things could have enjoyed sumptuous lunches based on fresh fish caught from his own fleet.
