Best Places in Calabria

Calabria forms the tip of the boot in southern Italy and is washed by the Thyrrenian Sea on the west side and the Ionian Sea on the east side. The capital of the Calabria region in southern Italy is Catanzaro. In the center of Calabria are the mountains of the Apennines, which reach up to over 2,000 meters. With about 800 kilometers of coastline, Calabria is also an excellent destination for a beach or seaside vacation. But the region has more to offer: Mountain ranges such as the Aspromonte and national parks such as the Sila National Park invite visitors to hike and bike. Ancient settlements or churches and monasteries or excavation sites let you experience history live. Lively coastal towns like Tropea, Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Pizzo or cities like Cosenza invite you to stroll, swim, eat and do other activities. Impressive views of the blue sea or enchanted mountain villages can also be found in many places in Calabria. #calabria #italy #calabriatravelguide #bestplaces

TOP 5 Foods to try in CALABRIA, Italy!! ???????? food & travel

I also tried the famous spicy 'Nduja burger in Calabria! ????

Back in Calabria for more street food, this is my personal top 5 italian foods list to try in this beautiful Southern Italy region. We start with a typical cheese and salami platter, Italian's favourite way to start a meal, with a variety of cured hams, sausage and cheese with spicy onion jam. We ate this at a butcher who sources all the meats fresh from its own store.

Number 2 in the list is the famous sausage panini of Calabria, a well known street food especially in the summer season, where small towns have their street festivals and people love eating out in the streets.

Third, I show the famous stuffed eggplants of Calabria; these are bit size wonders, which you can find in traditional restaurants in Calabria (or if you have a nonna there, seh can cook the for you :D).

Number 4 is an amazing Tuna Steak Panini; this is a more recent trend in Calabria, we did not feel satisfied with the canned tuna sandwich so we went for the real thing :D

Finally, I'll show you some highlights of the Calabrian Pasticceria, the perfect dessert to have in the summer evening to find relief from the hot weather.

Hope you enjoy, let me know in the comment section! :D

SCILLA [Calabria] Italy walking tour in 4k - Summer destination

Scilla, Calabria, Italy walking tour in 4k, July 2021.

Hi my friends! Welcome to Scilla!!!
One of my favorite summer destinations in Calabria region, in the south of Italy.

Jovanotti's last video alla Salute was recorded here.

Scilla is the traditional site of the sea monster Scylla of Greek mythology.

The town has ancient origins that relate mainly to the period of the destruction of Troy and invokes the myths and legends of Ulysses with Scylla and Charybdis, of Homer and Dante Alighieri.

???? Best hotels in Scilla ????

The town's name derives from the mythological figure of Scylla, a young nymph who refused Glauco's love. With this in mind, you can imagine how much beauty and history these small villages hold.

???? Best Tours in Italy ????

The oldest town of Scilla is Chianalea and derives its name from floor of the galley, but it is also called Acquagrande or Canalea, because small houses built directly on the rocks are separated from each other by small alleys, like channels , which descend directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

❤️ Let's visit Scilla together!!!❤️

Places to see in ( Reggio Calabria - Italy )

Places to see in ( Reggio Calabria - Italy )

Reggio Calabria is a coastal city in southern Italy, separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina. The National Archaeological Museum houses the Riace Bronzes, a pair of ancient, life-size Greek statues. Nearby, the Bergamot Museum displays the tools used to extract the oil from this citrus fruit. To the east, mountainous Aspromonte National Park contains beech and pine forests sheltering wolves, boar and deer.

Reggio Calabria is a busy town in Calabria, at the tip of Italy's 'toe' and just over the water from Sicily. Along with Messina in Sicily, on the other side of the Strait of Messina, Reggio Calabria was almost totally destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 1908. The town was rebuilt to elegant plans and - for a port - it is a surprisingly pleasant and amiable place, busy with traffic but rejoicing in a lovely setting. Reggio is a transport hub for ferry services to Sicily, and it is also on the tourist map for its archaeological museum. The town used to be the capital of the Calabria region; now it is merely a provincial capital. It's called Reggio Calabria, or sometimes Reggio di Calabria, to distinguish it from a town of the same name in Emilia-Romagna, known as Reggio Emilia.

The Ancient Greek town which stood here, Rhegion, was an important part of Magna Graecia, the Greek colonisation of Italy. The site has had obvious strategic importance over the centuries due to its proximity to Sicily and the shipping route through the Strait of Messina. However, the most important tourist attractions in Reggio are not from the city itself. The two famous Greek bronze statues in the Museo Nazionale in Reggio were found in the sea fifty miles away, near a village after which they are named: the Riace Bronzes, the Bronzi di Riace. These are larger than life-size sculptures of heroic warriors; there is speculation about their origins, creator and significance, but whatever their story, the two heroes are beautiful and rare mementoes from the past.

The National Museum in Reggio (Museo Nazionale di Reggio Calabria) is arguably the region's most important tourist destination, and many travellers visit Reggio purely to see the museum. As well as the Riace Bronzes, the museum holds a superb collection of exhibits from Rhegion and other Greek sites in Calabria, including Locri. The bronze statues are in pride of place in a room shared with another lovely bronze sculpture, the head of a philosopher. The museum is closed on Mondays. It's located on Piazza de Nava, at the northern end of the town centre, close to the seafront. The nearest station is Reggio Calabria Lido - for more travel advice, see below. The grand museum building was designed in the 1930s by Marcello Piacentini, the architect of Rome's EUR district.

Reggio Calabria's greatest pride, after the statues, is its long panoramic seafront. This long wide promenade is a pleasant place to stroll while admiring the view over the sea to Sicily. At a lower level and right on the shore is another walk where there are some 'beach' establishments with sunloungers to rent. A famous phenomenon called the Fata Morgana is sometimes visible from Reggio: a mirage which shimmers in the air over the sea.

Historic sights in Reggio are rather sparse, due to the vicissitudes suffered by the town. But there are a few visible ruins visible near the seafront including Roman baths and a stretch of Greek wall. If you are spending time here, other tourist attractions include the municipal art gallery (Pinacoteca Civica), the cathedral (Duomo), rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, and the Villa Comunale public gardens. Reggio's principal thoroughfare is Corso Garibaldi, running parallel to the seafront a few streets inland, and the central square is Piazza Italia.

Fortunately, there’s no need to doubt the food. Reggio hides some of Calabria’s best salt-of-the-earth restaurants. You can work up an appetite for them by hiking in the nearby Parco Nazionale dell'Aspromonte, or exploring the coastline at nearby seaside escapes along the Tyrrhenian and Ionian coasts.

Places to see in ( Reggio Calabria - Italy ) Castello Aragonese

Places to see in ( Reggio Calabria - Italy ) Castello Aragonese

Aragonese Castle is a castle in Reggio Calabria enlarged to its current extent by Ferdinand I of Aragon. The Aragonese castle of Reggio Calabria is the main fortification of the city, located in the homonymous Piazza Castello between Via Aschenez and Via Possidonea . Together with the Riace Bronzes , it is considered one of the main historical symbols of the city of Reggio . Since 1956 it houses the observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics.

Although universally known as Aragonese, the castle of Reggio actually has much more ancient origins, traces of a fortification of this area of the city in fact date back to times of much earlier than the construction of the actual castle.

Today the hill on which the fortress stands is much less evident, but in antiquity it represented an important point for the protection of the system of the walls. Most probably, the belt of the palaiapolis (the palèpoli which was the archaic city founded in the 8th century BC by the Calcidesi ) had, as the lower corner of the walls that descended from the acropolis , the area of the current castle. In the Hellenistic period, with the enlargement of the city towards the sea, the hill remained a fortified place of considerable military importance, while the walls, which in the polis of the classical era bent to the north, now descended to the port; the archaeological site of the Greek Walls on theMatteotti seafront shows the corner of the belt.

In Roman times, during the imperial period, the walls were probably not cured and restored, given the prosperity enjoyed by the empire, and the most important forts along the walls were abandoned to their fate. Under Emperor Justinian I , during the war between the Goths and the Byzantines , Belisarius entered Reggio to free it from the barbarians and found the city devoid of fortifications, so the general immediately ordered the restoration of the city walls. He could not in fact allow the city to be unguarded given the important role that the port of Reggio held in the connections between Italy and Constantinople . So the lower part of the walls that were resting on the port, the hill of the castle, resumedit then became the angular bastion of the boundary, facing the mountain. All this created a fortified center that protected the port of Reggio and all of southern Calabria . The documented existence of a real castle dates back to the year 536 .

Despite numerous interventions, the appearance of the castle remained almost unchanged since the time of Ferdinand I until it was decided to reconvert the barracks that led to the demolition of the ravelin with the unification of the internal floor; during the Risorgimento, the Aragonese castle became a political prison and a place for the rebels' execution.

In 1860 , the city and the castle were conquered by Giuseppe Garibaldi , then with the unification of Italy and the new town plan (drawn up in 1869 ), the bastion was considered a foreign body in the new urban structure, if desired in its place draw a large square. This sparked disputes between those who wanted to demolish the castle to make disappear the last testimony of Spanish rule and those who wanted to prevent its demolition because it is a historical monument of ancient and important city memories. The idea of the Municipality of Reggio - which in 1874 bought it from the Government to demolish it - opposed the then Minister of Education, stating that the castle was an archaeological monument.

In 1892 the provincial commission of archaeological assets decreed a partial demolition of the castle but with the preservation of the two towers as Historical monument of the city, and five years later (in 1897 ) the castle was declared a national monument .

In the early 1900s it was used by an artillery brigade. The earthquake of 1908 damaged the oldest rooms but left the two towers unharmed; the damage, even if minimal, of the structure caused a decree law of the Civil Engineers of 1917 to indicate the methods of demolition, but in the same year the castle was spared because it was used as a barracks.
