Lira is a city in Northern Uganda. It was the main commercial center of Lango region. Lira is the main metropolitan center of the now defunct Lango District (which corresponds geographically with the current Lango sub-region).

Lira city is part of Lango sub-region, which consists of the following districts: Alebtong District, Amolatar District, Apac District, Dokolo District, Lira District, Kole District, Otuke District and Oyam District. The city of Lira remains the principle commercial centre of the sub-region.

Lira City is located approximately 337 kilometres (209 mi), by road, north of the city of Kampala, the capital and largest city in the country.[7] The coordinates of Lira City are 2°14'50.0N 32°54'00.0E (Latitude:02.2472; Longitude:32.9000).[8] The city lies at an average elevation of 1,063 metres (3,488 ft), above sea level.

Lira is served by a railway station of the Uganda Railways network. The city is also served by a public civilian airport, Lira Airport, administered by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda.

Lira is a city in the Northern Region of Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial centre of Lira District.

Lira is approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi), by road, southeast of Gulu, the largest city in the Northern Region of Uganda, along the highway between Gulu and Mbale. This is approximately 124 kilometres (77 mi) northwest of Soroti, the nearest city to the south.

The clash at Lira was the last important battle of the Uganda–Tanzania War, as the remnants of Amin's army completely disintegrated thereafter.

The Beautiful LIRA CITY in Northern Uganda | Uganda cities.

YOU'RE WELCOME TO LIRA CITY;

Lira is a city found in the Lango sub region of northern Uganda approximately 337 kilometres by road, north of the city of Kampala, the capital and largest city in Uganda.
It is the main administrative and commercial centre of Lango sub region.
Lira city sits at an average elevation of 1063 metres above sea level.

Lira started as a trading centre in 1919 and became a township in 1933, in 1954, the township became a town board, and at independence in 1962, Lira became a town council.
In 1985, Lira became a municipality.
And finally attained city status in 2020.

Lira was one of the last towns in Uganda held by loyalists of Idi Amin during the Uganda Tanzania War between 1978 and 1979. A force consisting of the Tanzania People's Defence Force's 201st Brigade and the Uganda National Liberation Front's Kikosi Maalum attacked Lira on 15th May 1979, ousting the Amin loyalists after a short battle. The clash at Lira was the last important battle of the Uganda Tanzania War, as the remnants of Amin's army completely disintegrated thereafter.

However in the years after, Lira city has grown to be among Uganda's busiest cities in terms of trade and industrialization shown by the steady increase in tax collection from this city.
Lira homes industries like the mukwano industries lira, which is a food processing company and ngette tropical holding limited, another food processing company.
In a bid to increase the level of industrialization in this city, An 80 kilometres 132 kilovolt electricity line from the Karuma Power Station is under construction to a substation in Lira, under the supervision of Intec Gopa International Energy Consultants of Germany

Modern hotels have been established in Lira, one of which is the kanberra hotel. This is a very beautiful hotel located in Lira, it has good bedrooms and a restaurant which provide quality accommodation. Another hotel in lira is the west cliff hotel, this modern hotel also has good bedrooms. Pacific grand hotel is another accommodation facility with awesome bedrooms.

Lira is home to the Lira University, which is one of the three public universities in the north, other two being Gulu university and muni university.
Lira university was initially a constituent college of Gulu university in 2009 established on a niche of training students in health sciences. But has now grown to have the first university teaching hospital in Uganda.

Another university is the All Saints University which is a private university affiliated with the Church of Uganda.

The Lira regional referral hospital is a government facility providing health services to the people of lira city.

The city is served by a public civilian airport, Lira Airport, administered by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda.

In August 2014, the national population census put the population at 99059 which increased from 80900 in the 2002 national census.
