Timor-Leste
Country in Asia
Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country's struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002. The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay. ― Google

Bazartete - nice mountain village in Liquica district, Timor Leste | Базартете, Восточный Тимор

Bazartete was a complete surprise to me. I didn't expect much from the visit but ended up really enjoying the trip. And it's so close to Dili. Can definitely recommend it for a day trip. I wish they would open a cafe or restaurant there though. At present moment there is zero tourist infrastructure and the road is habitually bad as any other mountain road in Timor.

You will definitely would wish to travel to Timor-Leste after watching this video. Timor-Leste offers a rich cultural heritage spun from tens of thousands of years of human habitation, the Portuguese and Indonesian colonial periods, and from the depths of a society which has cultural traditions as the fabric of that bonds society together.

Carnival de Timor is the annual festival held in Dili in middle of April (sometimes in May, depending on rain season). Initiated by the Ministry of Tourism in 2010, Carnival de Timor is all about fun, music and multiculturalism. Both modern and traditional costumes, East Timorese and foreign minorities, even embassies also participate in this annual festival. The parade start in a landmark and end in Palacio do Governo, greeted by bands and award for best dressed group. The crowd continued to dance into the night with live music and other carnival attractions.

Timor-Leste offers a rich cultural heritage spun from tens of thousands of years of human habitation, the Portuguese and Indonesian colonial periods, and from the depths of a society which has cultural traditions as the fabric of that bonds society together.

Timor-Leste is well positioned for community-based ecotourism, which has been written into the nation’s tourism strategic plan. The Nino Konis National Park (situated in the eastern part of the country) is a well protected area and considered as some of the last surviving zones of tropical lowland rainforest in the world with rich coastal environment. The national park accommodates bird-watching, diving, trekking and pre-historic archeological sites.

Atauro Island and Jaco Island in Tutuala attract divers, snorkelers and green tourism enthusiasts. Both destinations provide eco-lodge facilities with some support from local NGOs in the region. A must-see attraction is the local divers and fishermen in Atauro, who fish using only traditionally made goggles and spear guns. Atauro is also well known for its distinctive wooden sculptures and is an excellent place to buy variety handicrafts.

For more adventurous tourists, Timor-Leste offers what is simply world class trekking, which can be experienced near places such as Mount Ramelau (± 3000 above sea level), Ainaro, Mt. Matebian (Baucau) and Mt. Kablaki (in Same district), to name a few.

While trekking Timor-Leste, you can keep busy by looking for some of the 260 species of birds on offer (the entire continent of Australia has some 650 resident species), 32 of which are endemic and 8 of which are exclusive to the island of Timor and found nowhere else in the world.

Coffee had been the main export commodity for East Timor since the colonial period. To visit East Timor is to taste its coffee grown in several regions such as Ermera, Maubisse, Manufahi and Liquisa. Travel to the coffee plantations takes you through winding mountainous roads, until over 1,000m above sea level altitude, cool climate (as low as 15C), and greeted by smiling farmers who are more than willing to welcome you to their homes. Other alternative is to contact one of the organizations dealing with coffee for a field visit to their cooperative farmer member's coffee plantation. They are: CCT/NCBA, ELSAA Cafe, Timor Global, Timor Corp, Peace Winds, PARC-IC and Alter Trade Timor.

Timor's coffee is now well known across the world and amongst organic coffee drinkers. It is now even sold in Starbucks Seattle as 'Arabia Timor' brand. Several organizations are promoting East Timorese coffee as Fair Trade Coffee in U.S., Japan and South Korea. One Japanese coffee expert praised Timor's coffee as, 'one of the remaining original species in the world today.'

Timor-Leste also produces various types of woven textiles and products for export and unique souvenir. High end and expensive tais ( Timor-Leste traditional hand-woven textile) are made from nature-produced colors, while more economical textiles use chemical dye. 13 districts in the nation produce distinct design and colors to another. Tais markets are available in Dili; however, for antique collections, one must visit the districts.

East Timor

Spent a couple of weeks in Asia's newest country, East Timor, and road tripped to the furthest southeast point in Asia. Sleeping in hammocks on the beach across from Jaco Island and hitchhiking in the back of an open pickup for hours during a monsoon are just a couple of memorable moments from this journey.

MAP OF EAST TIMOR [ TIMOR LESTE ]

salutations my friends . this is a map of East Timor . Located in between Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, the island of Timor is the largest of the Lesser Sunda Islands, which lie within the Malay archipelago.  The island is surrounded by the Ombai and Wetar Straits of the rougher Banda Sea in the north, and the calmer Timor Sea in the south.  East Timor shares the island with Indonesia, which separates the main part of the country from the Oecusse exclave. The island of Atauro lies north of the mainland,: with the fourth area being the small island of Jaco. The Savu Sea lies north of Oecusse:   The country is about 265 kilometres long and 97 kilometres wide, with a total land area of 14,874 square kilometres :  The country's coastline covers around 700 kilometres ,:   while the main land border with Indonesia is 125 kilometres long, and the Oecusse land border is around 100 kilometres long.:  Maritime borders exist with Australia to the south and Indonesia elsewhere. East Timor has an exclusive economic zone of 77,051 km2 . excuse me. please comment about east Timor. continuing.

The interior of the country is mountainous,  with ridges of inactive volcanic mountains extending along the island.  Almost half of the country has a slope of at least 40%. The south is slightly less mountainous, and has some plains near the coastline.  The highest point is Tatamailau (also known as Mount Ramelau) at 2,963 metres . Most rivers dry up at least partially during the dry season.  Outside of some coastal areas and river valleys, the soil is shallow and prone to erosion, and its quality is poor.   The capital, largest city, and main port is Dili, and the second-largest city is the eastern town of Baucau. thats all for now. thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps and for the love of east timor. goodbye. #mapschool #mapsolo #maps #mapas #easttimor #timorleste

Motorbike trip to Ramelau - climbing the highest mountain in East Timor

Dili-Remexio-Aileu-Maubissi-Hato Builico-Ramelau
I made this 2 days trip by motorbike on the 29th Dec 2015 just before the New Year's Eve.
The climb started at 3-30 am and lasted around 3 hours so that we could meet the dawn on the top.
In spite of the rainy season I was lucky to have a spotless sky above with billions of stars and the bright moon. We used no torches but had no troubles with going up. Having a certain climbing experience I may call the climb to Ramelau quite challenging, as the slopes sometimes are rather steep especially at the top. It was also freezing cold with a strong wind at the summit so that I couldn't stay there too long and my hands without gloves grew numb.
Still it was very exciting and the views are magnificent.
I stayed at Pousada Alecrim - very basic accommodation but for a reasonable price, with nice staff, and close to the mountain.

Amazing motobike trip in Timor Leste: Mota Loes - Balibo Fort - Batugade - Indonesian border

Another great weekend around Timor Leste full of discoveries and great moments to remember. Although very tiny, Timor Leste has plenty of places to see at the weekend.
The 2 biggest problems for tourism development now are - lack of good transportation and crazy prices for accommodation. The hotel in Balibo fort, which is not even a 3***, offers rooms for 90-130$. For Asia it's absolutely unreasonable and that's why the hotel is empty all of the time. A local poorly looking guest house in Batugade was 25$ a night which is ridiculous as well. It doesn't help tourism development and it doesn't contribute to local communities.
