Initially, the name Palmovka referred to the Libeň vineyard estate No. 59, which no longer exists. According to the oldest historical sources, it was bought by Adam Fridrich in 1631 and later sold to the New Town merchant Matěj Vojtěch Miler of Mildenburg. After his death, the vineyard (at that time called Milerka) was divided among his heirs. One of the heirs was the daughter of Voršil, married to Palmová. Since then, the place has been called Palmovka.

In 1832, František Antonín Müller bought the whole area with a vineyard, building, a stable, a barn, brick arbors, and an orchard and established a soap and candle factory. He then produced alcoholic beverages in No. 2. The poet Vítězslav Hálek often visited the Müller family. According to unconfirmed reports, he wrote his last poems here. His great-granddaughter, the actress Jana Štěpánková, was for many years a member of the Theatre pod Palmovkou in Libeň.

In 1889, Palmovka was bought by real estate entrepreneur Vojtěch Švarc, who parcelled out the land and offered it for block development with apartment houses. The builder, Alfons Wertmüller, purchased the estate and donated a small part of the land to the municipality of Libeň to construct a new school. At the end of the 19th century, the surrounding streets began to be built, and the old homestead disappeared.

The name Palmovka is given to the quiet street, which houses, among others, the Palmovka Primary School. However, the term is used to refer to the intersection of Sokolovská and Zenklova Streets under the Libeňský gasworks, where a modern house of the same name and a café were built at the beginning of the 20th century. After the closure of the railway line and especially after the opening of the Prague metro station on the B line, this designation moved about 100 meters further north and marks the junction of tram lines from Karlín, Žižkov, Vysočany, Kobylis, and Holešovice at the beginning of the Libeň Bridge.

Until the mid-1980s, the railway line from the Vysočany railway station to the Prague-Těšnov station ran across Palmovka (it ran in the location of today's tram line in Na Žertvách Street). Passenger traffic on this section was discontinued in 1972, and freight 12 years later. Near the protected level crossing at Palmovka, there was the Prague-Libeň lower station.

After the liquidation of the line, most of the station was demolished, and due to the high traffic, Palmovka became a vibrant place. 1986 metro construction began here; the station underneath was opened in November 1990. The tram line from Palmovka to Ohrada was opened in the same year. Like a large part of Prague, Palmovka was affected by a five-hundred-year flood in 2002 caused by the backflow of water from the Vltava River into the Rokytka basin.

The Old Town Hall with the famous Prague Astronomical Clock. The winding lanes of the Jewish Quarter, which you know from the novels of Franz Kafka, steeped in the legend of the Golem. Cafes enticing you to come and have a seat, boutiques and sight-seeing cruises on the Vltava. The Gothic Charles Bridge and Church of St. Nicholas in the Lesser Town, the most beautiful Baroque church in Prague. The Palace Gardens set away from the bustle of the city, Petřín with a lookout tower reminiscent of a small Eiffel Tower and Prague Castle … Each of Prague’s districts has its own characteristic atmosphere and unique charm. Prague presents itself to you as a changeable city, which likes to alternate styles: it is romantic and successful, ancient and modern, but above all it is a city that is cosmopolitan through and through, and is used to welcoming foreigners. It is time to get acquainted.

00:00 Národní, formerly Národní třída, is one of the essential avenues in Prague, Czech Republic. It is placed on the boundary of New Town and Old Town, in the southwest direction from the city's center. This avenue connects the Legion Bridge bridge with Jungmannovo náměstí. In medieval times, there were fortification walls. On Friday, 17 November 1989, riot police violently suppressed a peaceful student demonstration, which is considered the initiation of the Velvet Revolution. Národní třída continued to be an eventful locale during the rest of the revolution.

06:10 U Fleků is a pub and microbrewery in Prague, Czech Republic. It occupies buildings around a central courtyard at Křemencova 11 in New Town (Praha 1), not far from the National Theatre. The front facade of the building has an old, highly decorated clock above its door. Founding members of Hajduk Split, at U Fleků.
Initially a family business, the pub was founded in 1499 and therefore celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1999. It has been referred to as the oldest brewery in Prague. In 1762 the brewery was bought by Jakub Flekovský, which gave its current name: U Fleků means in Czech At the Fleks. After World War II, the company was nationalized, and control was transferred to a board of management appointed by the state. Following the Velvet Revolution, the company was privatized.

08:20 Myslíkova is a Prague street in New Town and runs along with Prague 1 in the north and Prague 2 in the south. The street connects Masaryk's embankment by the Vltava with Spálena Street by Charles Square. This fork of the road forms a small square. This street is also the border between Prague 1 and Prague 2 city districts.

12:08 The Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and the Czech lands. It thus represents the spiritual center of the local Orthodox Church.
Although the foundations of the cathedral date back to the 12th century, it acquired its present form much later, between 1730 and 1740, when the outstanding architect of the High Baroque, K. I. Diezenhofer, undertook its construction. The original Roman Catholic church was consecrated at the end of the 18th century. The building was assigned to the Czech Orthodox Church by a resolution of the Czechoslovak Government on 29 July 1933. Apart from basic painting and cleaning of the frescoes, the new owners had to adapt the church space to the Orthodox liturgical tradition. Its central expression is undoubtedly the iconostasis, which was created for the future cathedral according to the design of Prof. V. Brandt; the icons are the work of the academic painter Svatoslav Vukovic from the former Yugoslavia. Other numerous icons in the nave are by the Russian painter Mikhail Vasnetsov, the famous builder of Czech Orthodox churches, iconographer Fr. Archimandrite Andrei (Kolomacki), and other artists.
On Saturday, 28 September 1935, the church was consecrated in honor of the Slavic apostles and teachers Saints Cyril and Methodius. The consecration ceremony was performed by four Orthodox bishops - Gorazd II of Bohemia, Damaskin of Mukachevo, Metropolitan Dositej, a representative of the Serbian Church, and Sergei (Korolyov), a representative of the Russian Church.
During the German occupation of our country, the cathedral became a place of resistance to fascist rule. After the assassination of the acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich on 27 May 1942, the paratroopers who carried out the assassination hid in the crypt of the cathedral. The tomb was captured by the SS Prag on 18 June. Orthodox priests and their families were arrested, tortured, and murdered, and Bishop Gorazd was shot on 4 September 1942. After the end of World War II, the church was rededicated on 5 July 1947, and since 1998, it has been a National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrichiad.

Prague - Beautiful capital of Czech Republic

Czech Republic, Prague ???????? - walking to Park Podviní #184

Today i am in Czech Republic for work and i decided to go for a walk in Prague 9. I started at my hotel and made my way over to a nice park located very close. It was fun to see the differences between my country and Prague. Enjoy!

Podviní Park is a public park in Prague in the Vysočany and Libeň districts. It was created in the years 1997–1998, realized according to the designs of Stanislav Špoula, Miroslav Pacner, Petr Hořejš and Libor Culka. The dominant feature of the park is a stone fortification resembling a lizard, which is ruled by a ten-meter-high trunk of an old oak tree with its roots turned upwards. The park is bordered on the south side by Rokytka, into which flows from the park an artificially created system of streams through which the park is interwoven and which flow from the lake below the fort. The streams with small bridges create a pleasant atmosphere of the whole park. The park is equipped with numerous benches and places to relax. There are several playgrounds, on the eastern edge of the park there is a rope center.

The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County.
