I Walked Through Trees That Leo Tolstoy Planted: Yasnaya Polyana in Autumn

For Moscuvites, the fall is all about walks through the changing birch trees. This simply action was appreciated by none more than Leo Tolstoy: one of the greatest authors not just of Russia but of any country on earth. His novels inspired the likes of pacifist and anarchist revolutionaries, stirred the culture ideas of religion, war and aristocracy decades before their fruit were even seen.

I got the chance in the same fall leaves that Tolstoy valued so highly to walk where he walked and see what he saw at his home and estate: Yasnaya Polyana, where it is almost as if he was simply out at the time for a walk. His clothes still laid out on his couch, and his workers still hard at work in the fields nearby.

Moscow. Povarskaya str. Mansions of russian aristocrats. [Moscow Travel Guide]

Hello, everyone! Want to know more about Moscow? Subscribe to our channel.

Spring is in the air, so let s speak about something romantic! For example, about the first bal of Natasha Rostova.

What house was the prototype of Rostovs estate in War and peace?
Did the 200 year old elm, the favorite of Ivan Bunin, remain?

Where did the people who worked in the tzar kitchen live?
What other sculpture of Vera Muhina after Worker and kolhoz woman is popular in Moscow?

Where did Pushkin first read his poem Poltava?
You will know all this when you see our new video!

Today our Moscow travel guide invites you to walk along the most aristocratic street in Moscow - Povarskaya. It connects New Arbat and Sadovoye ring.

In fact Povarskaya means Cook s street. Its because those, who were in service in the Tzar kitchen lived here In 16th -17th century. And also Ivan the Great s guardsmen, because this street was a way to Novgorod.

We ll start our excursion from the legendary restaurant Praga. It was opened in 1872 and the address was Povarskaya, 1. After the October revolution this luxury restaurant turned into a canteen! Mayakovskiy liked to eat here.

This is a church of Simeon Stolpnik. It was built in 17th century. Look at its beautiful 5 domes in the traditional Moscow style.

Here count Sheremetiev married a serf actress Praskovia Zhemchugova. Gogol used to come here during the last years of his life.

Let s continue our walk and go up the street to the Sadovoe ring. The Golden age of the estates on Povarskaya starts from the 18th century, from the Peter times.

The Tzar kitchen moves to the new capital St Petersburg. And the street begins to be a home of russian aristocrats: Gagarin, Golitsin, Dolgorukiy, Volkonsky.

Today most of the estates host different foreign embassies, for example Norway or Cyprus. In Bludov s estate on Povarskaya, 15 there is a Supreme court of Russia now. Look, here is the sculpture of Femida, without an eye patch for some reason.

Not far from the Borisoglebsky street was a court of Peter s the first sister Natalia.

Unfortunately not all estates survived till nowadays. Some of them burned out, some were demolished.

For example between 2 streets Borisoglebskiy and Big Rshevskiy instead of 2 luxury estates of the 18th century the soviets made a park of Ivan Bunin. 200year old elm the favorite Bunins tree unfortunately has not survived.

Lets continue our excursion. Look at the house number 25, the Gagarin estate. Prince Gagarin, the director of the Emperors theatre ordered to build the main house in the empire style.

In the 1920s the cavalry school was in this building, and in the 1937 it became the Literature institute. In the yard you can find another famous sculpture of Vera Muhina The thunderbird of Revolution.

And here is the Orlov s house. In the 19th century it belonged to the count Sheremetiev. In one of its splendid halls Pushkin read his poem Poltava for the 1st time.

The only wooden house that remained on Povarskaya, is the house with mesonine of the princess Volkonskaya.

House number 50 - the famous Writers house was the first writers cub in Moscow.

And at last we came up to the house № 52. This very estate with 6 columns was the home of Tolstov s Natasha Rostova, the hero of his famousWar and peace.

This yellow estate is made in russian classicism style. There is a small church near the main house. In 1920 the Palace of arts was opened here. Boris Pasternak, Alexey Tolstoy, Sergei Esenin and Marina Zvetaeva performed here.

In the yard you cfn see the monument to Lev Tolstoy made by Vasnetcov.
Today several writing organizations and restaurants are located here.

Povarskaya led us to the Sadoviy ring. Here, on Kudrinskaya square Moscow travel guide and me, Vera will say bye bye to you.

Stay on our channel, subscribe and enjoy the wonderful views of Moscow, its streets, squares, buildings. Suggest the places, that you would like to see, Bye!

Samara is a city in southwestern Russia, framed by the Volga and Samara rivers. The central Samara Regional Art Museum, housed in an ornate mansion, exhibits Russian paintings from the 16th century onward. Nearby, Stalin’s Bunker, designed in WWII to protect the political leader, is now a subterranean museum. Farther along the river, Samara Zoological Park is home to monkeys, jaguars and Nile crocodiles.

Unusual, beautiful and spectacular train station. Upstairs there is an observation deck for sessions. It is worth going! If not for the sake of views (although they are also quite good), then certainly for the sake of architecture.

The Museum Estate of Lev Tolstoy in Moscow

The building accommodating Leo Tolstoy’s Museum in Khamovniki once belonged to Tolstoy. Nothing seems to have changed since the time of its celebrated former owner.
Tolstoy bought a house in Khamovniki in 1882. Back then, it was located on the outskirts of Moscow.
Tolstoy spent 19 winters in Khamovniki, leaving for Yasnaya Polyana in summertime.
Many items on display once belonged to Tolstoy himself.

The Petersburger is a special creature, and there are features that distinguish him from the ordinary population of the country. Here is a different time, space, sunshine and townspeople. Among the native Petersburgers, there are many people from aristocratic families, their habits are inherited, formed over the years and generations, and have grown into genetics. He hates and never uses the word Peter (since this is the word of the proletarian outskirts). We must say St. Petersburg. He always has chronic rhinitis. Prefers beer - vodka, port. Beer is a drink of ordinary people. Likes to save up in order to buy the most expensive cigarettes later, collectible, something impractical for the soul. For all his delicacy, he has a pronounced sense of humor, sarcasm, he can very delicately, and if necessary, abruptly put someone in their place, without being embarrassed by swearing, profanity, which he naturally uses, to the point and with great grace.

Mars in Tula. Lev Tolstoy. Cars of USSR. Cave church. Tulas region.

I’ve always dreamed to visit this region and city of Tula. But main idea was to eat gingerbread and drink some tea from samovar. Because of Covid-19 main museums of city were closed and I decided to explore Tulas region. And I was honestly pretty shocked because of how many interesting and amazing places Tula region has to offer: Yasnaya Polyana, Konduki, open air museum, church caves.
Hope you’ll enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed filming it!

21:23 Ц. Д. M. Central House of Literature
Former main house of the city estate of B. B. Svyatopolk-Chetvertinsky
Mansion where gathered the most influential noble families of the Masonic lodge in Russia. It was built in 1889 under the order of Prince B. B. Svyatopolk-Chetvertinsky by the famous Moscow architect P. S. Boitsov. The house was built in modern style with romantic leanings. Soon after reconstruction, the house was bought by the wife of the general from a cavalry Alexander Andreev Olsufev, her Royal Highness the Grand duchess Elisaveta Fedorovna, nee Miklashevsky. She lived here until 1917 when she was compelled to emigrate from Russia.
After October revolution the house was occupied by the city poor until 1925 when the house was occupied by department of child care with a day care center. Then in 1932 the building became the House of Writers. The Central House of writers was based here in 1934 – in the year of the first congress of the Soviet writers and formation of the Union of writers of the USSR. The legendary creative club of the Moscow writers became the present house for many known people of that epoch.
The Central House of Literature became a favorite place of the literary community, even in military war years the life here did not stop. In its dining room meals were arranged for writers and members of their families. For fans of literature this became an original temple of literature. To be invited to a meeting in here was an honor for generations of Muscovites. The Central House of writers at first settled down in Povarskaya Street which for a while during Soviet times has another name but is again called Povarskaya Street.
In the late fifties a new building was attached to the house on the side of the court yard with an exit on parallel street, So the House of Literature became the House on two streets. There appeared a new Big and Small halls, a cellar where a cafe continues to operate, a billiards room, a fine lobby and hall, office accommodations and new big cafe which in due course was named the Pestrov hall.
