Exploring Donegal Town in IRELAND

Exploring Donegal Town in IRELAND

Donegal (/ˌdʌnɪˈɡɔːl, ˌdɒn-/ DUN-ig-AWL, DON-; Irish: Dún na nGall, meaning 'fort of the foreigners') is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. The name was also historically spelt 'Dunnagall'. Although Donegal gave its name to the county, now Lifford is the county town. From the 15th until the early 17th century, Donegal was the 'capital' of Tyrconnell (Tír Chonaill), a Gaelic kingdom controlled by the O'Donnell dynasty of the Northern Uí Néill.

Donegal is in South Donegal and is located at the mouth of the River Eske and Donegal Bay, which is overshadowed by the Blue Stack Mountains ('the Croaghs'). The Drumenny Burn, which flows along the eastern edge of Donegal Town, flows into the River Eske on the north-eastern edge of the town, between the Community Hospital and The Northern Garage.

The Ballybofey Road (the R267) crosses the Drumenny Burn near where it flows into the River Eske. The town is bypassed by the N15 and N56 roads. The centre of the town, known as The Diamond, is a hub for music, poetic and cultural gatherings in the area.

Unmissable Experiences On The Wild Atlantic Way In Donegal Ireland [Pt. 1] | Letterkenny & Glenveagh

An Epic Wild Atlantic Way Road Trip in Donegal.

After spending Christmas in Athone and Dingle , our plan was to go on a roadtrip to Donegal for New Years. Situated in the north-west region of Ireland, Donegal County is home to some of Ireland’s most ravishing sceneries and portside settlements.

The road from Athlone to Donegal is full of surprises. After every few miles, there are beautiful places that will attract you to take a detour and a pause, soaking in the warmth of the Irish geographical beauty. BENBULBIN tabletop mountain was one such detour for us. Known as Ireland’s most distinctive mountain, it is the western point of the Dartry Mountains, a large and bulky collection of heads and glaciated valleys. The mountain was shaped during the ice age, when entire Ireland was under glaciers. Originally it was a large plateau which got its present shape due to the moving glaciers.

Taking another detour through the town of Mullaghmore, we arrived at a place from where we can get a glimpse of the Classiebawn Castle This is a country house built for one of the former Prime Ministers of UK. This castle has been passed through many hands and is currently standing on a privately owned estate, prohibiting the visitors to enter it.

So after a few pit stops, few detours and lots of fun-filled moments, we finally arrived at our destination, Letterkenny, Lying on the banks of river Swilly in East Donegal, Letterkenny is the largest and the most populous town in the county. Next day was New Year's Eve. We woke up, stunned by the beauty surrounding our AirBnB. This home was placed in a scenic area of Letterkenny, offering uninterrupted breathtaking views of Lough Swilly.

Ireland is home to some beautiful National Parks. So, we decided to spend our first half of the day exploring the Glenveagh National Park which is the second largest park in Ireland and is around 40 mins drive from Letterkenny. The road to the place is amazingly spectacular and we were amazed by the sudden drastic change in topography, from green to brown and the wild, rugged, natural surroundings that promise you lush forests, pristine lakes, rugged mountains and some explore-worthy trails. The trail we chose was - The Lakeside Walk. This scenic 3.5 kilometres flat walk will take you along the shores of the lough Veagh until you reach Glenveagh Castle.

Killybegs | Things to do in Donegal | Killybegs Donegal | Slieve League | Slieve League Donegal

Killybegs | Things to do in Donegal | Killybegs Donegal | Slieve League | Slieve League Donegal

The best locations around Ireland / Northern Ireland and further afield. A travel blog/vlog of the hidden treasures that are on our doorstep.

Killybegs is a fantastic town in County Donegal in Ireland with a population of around 1,236 as of 2016.

It's the largest fishing port in the country located on the south coast of the county, north of Donegal Bay.

Situated along the coast of the Wild Atlantic Way down Ireland's west coast, it is a popular stop along this stunning route. Famous for its fish, Killybegs is a must see stop along the Wild Atlantic Way for any food lover.

Killybegs is a short drive from the beautiful Fintra beach, a popular family holiday spot and also situated close to Slieve League sea cliffs which are among the largest sea cliffs in Europe with their highest drop of 609m.

Fintra beach is considered one of the safest beaches in Ireland, it is registered blue flag and life guarded throughout the summer season and is popular with day trippers and families.

For any touring family, group or couple travelling the Wild Atlantic Way, Killybegs offers so much things to do and see in terms of spectacular scenery and beautiful food. We highly recommend you stop and breathe the fresh sea air and take in the sights!

The town is situated at the head of a scenic harbour and at the base of a vast mountainous tract. In the summer, there is a street festival celebrating the fish catches and incorporating the traditional Blessing of the Boats which we would really recommend.

When visiting the town, there are lots of great pubs, restaurants and hotels to try. If you fancy some amazing locally caught fish, you need to try the Killybegs Seafood Shack and you won't regret it!

DONEGAL: Glenveagh National Park - Fascinating place

Today we will be visiting GLENVEAGH NATIONAL PARK in DONEGAL.

Glenveagh National Park is a beautiful place, full of nature and history, in the middle of the mountains, unspoiled lakes, waterfalls, and enchanted native oak woodland in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains in the northwest of County Donegal.

At the centre of the Park on the edge of Lough Veagh is Glenveagh Castle, a late 19th-century castellated mansion, built as a hunting lodge.

There is a Shuttle Bus that brings you to The Castle, all tickets must be purchased at the visitors centre on arrival, also you can hire or bring your own bike or just walk.

If you would like to book a bike before arriving this is their website because sometimes the electric bikes and the children's seats are booked fast, you can hire the bike in the actual place too.

Bring a good insect repellent because especially in the summer, they are everywhere.

Please plan your visit. Remember some places close for winter.
