Auschwitz, Polish Oświęcim, also called Auschwitz-Birkenau, Nazi Germany’s largest concentration camp and extermination camp. Located near the industrial town of Oświęcim in southern Poland (in a portion of the country that was annexed by Germany at the beginning of World War II), Auschwitz was actually three camps in one: a prison camp, an extermination camp, and a slave-labour camp. As the most lethal of the Nazi extermination camps, Auschwitz has become the emblematic site of the “final solution,” a virtual synonym for the Holocaust. Between 1.1 and 1.5 million people died at Auschwitz; 90 percent of them were Jews. Also among the dead were some 19,000 Roma who were held at the camp until the Nazis gassed them on July 31, 1944—the only other victim group gassed in family units alongside the Jews. The Poles constituted the second largest victim group at Auschwitz, where some 83,000 were killed or died.
Auschwitz I
Auschwitz was probably chosen to play a central role in the “final solution” because it was located at a railway junction with 44 parallel tracks—rail lines that were used to transport Jews from throughout Europe to their death. Heinrich Himmler, chief of the SS, the Nazi paramilitary corps, ordered the establishment of the first camp, the prison camp, on April 27, 1940, and the first transport of Polish political prisoners arrived on June 14. This small camp, Auschwitz I, was reserved throughout its history for political prisoners, mainly Poles and Germans.

In October 1941, work began on Auschwitz II, or Birkenau, located outside the nearby village of Brzezinka. There the SS later developed a huge concentration camp and extermination complex that included some 300 prison barracks; four large so-called Badeanstalten (German: “bathhouses”), in which prisoners were gassed to death; Leichenkeller (“corpse cellars”), in which their bodies were stored; and Einäscherungsöfen (“cremating ovens”). Another camp (Buna-Monowitz), near the village of Dwory, later called Auschwitz III, became in May 1942 a slave-labour camp supplying workers for the nearby chemical and synthetic-rubber works of IG Farben. In addition, Auschwitz became the nexus of a complex of 45 smaller subcamps in the region, most of which housed slave labourers. During most of the period from 1940 to 1945, the commandant of the central Auschwitz camps was SS-Hauptsturmführer (Capt.) and ultimately SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieut. Col.) Rudolf Franz Höss (Hoess).
The death camp and slave-labour camp were interrelated. Newly arrived prisoners at the death camp were divided in a process known as Selektion. The young and the able-bodied were sent to work. Young children and their mothers and the old and infirm were sent directly to the gas chambers. Thousands of prisoners were also selected by the camp doctor, Josef Mengele, for medical experiments. Auschwitz doctors tested methods of sterilization on the prisoners, using massive doses of radiation, uterine injections, and other barbaric procedures. Experiments involving the killing of twins, upon whom autopsies were performed, were meant to provide information that would supposedly lead to the rapid expansion of the “Aryan race.”

NIŠ is our FIRST STOP in SERBIA!
Finally, we make it into SERBIA! Although we're looking forward to exploring a new country we have to prioritize having our broken suspension fixed. However, on our route we stopped in the fabulous town of Niš where we browse around the old town and market. We also visit the Red Cross Concentration Camp (established in mid-1941, and used to detain as many as 35,000 people during the war) as well as the Bubanj Memorial Park a World War II memorial complex (built to commemorate the shooting and execution of more than 10,000 citizens of Niš).
Although we found Niš to be a charming city we struggled with a bad choice in overnight parking and we reflect on the challenges of this type of full-time travel.

Zu Fuß lässt sich die südliche Eifel am besten erobern: Daniel Aßmann wandert durch herbstlich leuchtende Wälder, vorbei an Streuobstwiesen, und in der engen Teufelsschlucht nahe der luxemburgischen Grenze sogar über den Grund eines Millionen Jahre alten Meeres.
Der Film wurde vor der Flutkatastrophe 2021 produziert. Alle gezeigten Wanderungen und Orte wurden nicht in Mitleidenschaft gezogen oder sind in diesem Video entsprechend gekennzeichnet.
Ein Rundwanderweg führt Daniel Aßmann zum Fuß des 40 Meter hohen Basaltlavasteinbruchs Ettringer Lay bei Mayen-Koblenz. In Gerolstein trinkt er an einer berühmten Mineralwasserquelle, bevor er sich auf dem Felsenpfad in die dortigen Dolomiten begibt. In Prüm und Adenau wird es historisch. Danach warten entlang der Wanderwege kleine und große Abenteuer: Fliegenfischen mit einem Dreisternekoch, ein Ausritt mit Maultieren, ein Besuch beim letzten Mausefallenbauer von Neroth. Und auf der Kasselburg schenkt Daniel Aßmann einem Turmfalken die Freiheit.

Der Área Cámper Mazarrón liegt in Südspanien, Provinz Murcia in dem Dreieck der Städte Cartagena, Águilas und Murcia an der Costa Cálida.
Die Stadt Mazarrón mit den beiden Orsteilen Puerto de Mazarrón und Bolnuevo liegt landschaftlich äußerst reizvoll eingebettet zwischen zwei Landschaftsschutzgebieten, Sierra de las Moreras und Sierra de la Muela.
Bringen wir es auf den Punkt: Der Área Cámper Mazarrón ist etwa hälftig zwischen Mazarrón und Puerto de Mazarrón gelegen, zum Meer sind es nur ein paar Kilometer!
Der Tourismus ist überschaubar und hat seinen ganz besonderen eigenen Reiz. Man findet hier noch Restaurants und Lokale, wo man sich unter Spaniern befinden.
Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Freizeitmöglichkeiten, angefangen vom Radfahren, Wandern, Tauchen und hin zum Schwimmen. Die umliegenden Gemeinden und Städte laden zu einem Besuch ein, sei es eine Besichtigung von Kulturgütern oder das Einkaufen.
Der Área Cámper Mazarrón hat knapp 240 Stellplätze für Wohnmobile und Wohnwagen. Die Parzellen sind auch für große Wohnmobile bestens geeignet, es ist viel Platz und Raum vorhanden. Es beginnt mit großzügigen 100 m² und die Stellplätze oberhalb des Poolbereiches verfügen allesamt über 110 m².
Die Stellplätze sind sehr komfortabel ausgestattet, wie auch die gesamte Anlage.

ℹ️ About this episode:
On this episode of LivinRvision, we are heading back to Iowa. Our first overnight stay starts in Davenport, Iowa at the Rhythm City Casino and Resort. We ended up staying here for a couple nights before making our way to the Amana Colonies. Any time we travel I-80 and are going to be passing by the World’s Largest Truck Stop, we always have to stop and that’s what we did. If you like Buc-ees then you’ll want to stop at the I-80 Trucks stop, aka The World’s Largest Truck Stop.
It was time to head to the Amana Colonies but it was gong to be too late to start exploring, so we made a reservation in advance to stay the night at the Amana RV Park & Event Center. We decided to save a little bit of money and just pay for electric and water with no sewer, simply because we could just drive over to the dump station and empty the tanks. (We give a few tips throughout this video, so be sure not to miss anything).
The next morning comes and it is time to explore the Amana Colonies to eat some delicious food a rhubarb slushy and then learn about the history of the Amana Colonies. We were both born and raised in Iowa and we both had it ALL wrong about the Amana Colonies. How could that be right? ????
