Neckar River is a 362-kilometre-long (225 mi) river in Germany, mainly flowing through the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg, with a short section through Hesse. The Neckar is a major right tributary of the Rhine. Rising in the Black Forest near Villingen-Schwenningen in the Schwenninger Moos conservation area at a height of 706 m (2,316 ft) above sea level, it passes through Rottweil, Rottenburg am Neckar, Kilchberg, Tübingen, Wernau, Nürtingen, Plochingen, Esslingen, Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg, Marbach, Heilbronn and Heidelberg, before discharging into the Rhine at Mannheim, at 95 m (312 ft) above sea level.
From Plochingen to Stuttgart the Neckar valley is densely populated and industrialised, with several well-known companies, e.g. Daimler AG (the maker of Mercedes Benz cars) and Mahle GmbH being located there. Between Stuttgart and Lauffen the Neckar cuts a scenic, meandering, and in many places steep-sided, valley into fossiliferous Triassic limestones and Pleistocene travertine. Along the Neckar's valley in the Odenwald hills many castles can be found, including Hornberg Castle and Guttenberg Castle in Haßmersheim; the now-mothballed Obrigheim Nuclear Power Plant and the active Neckarwestheim Nuclear Power Plant are also located there. After passing Heidelberg, the Neckar discharges on average 145 m3/s (5,100 cu ft/s) of water into the Rhine, making the Neckar its 4th largest tributary, and the 10th largest river in Germany. From about 1100 Black Forest timber was rafted downstream as far as Holland, for use in shipyards.
The name Neckar might be derived from Nicarus and Neccarus from Celtic Nikros, meaning wild water or wild fellow. The grammatical gender of the name in German is masculine (Der Neckar). During the 19th century, traditional horse-drawn boats were replaced by steam-powered chain boats that used a 155 km (96 mi) long chain in the river to haul themselves upstream towing barges. After 1899 a railway made it possible to transport timber to the port of Heilbronn, limiting timber rafting to the lower part of the Neckar. Due to the construction of 11 locks, ships up to 1500 t could travel to Heilbronn in 1935.
By 1968 the last of 27 locks, at Deizisau, was completed, making the Neckar navigable for cargo ships about 200 kilometres (120 mi) upstream from Mannheim to the river port of Plochingen, at the confluence with the Fils, and where the Neckar bends, taking a northwesterly instead of a northeasterly course. Other important ports include Stuttgart and Heilbronn.

We visited Marbach am Neckar, located about 20km north of Stuttgart, about 30min by S-Bahn from Stuttgart central station.
This town is known as the birthplace of the German poet Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller. There are also many historical buildings and cute wooden houses that are typical of Germany, so there is a lot to see.
There is also a bike path, so if the weather is nice, cycling is a great way to visit :)

Tübingen, Sehenswürdigkeiten der Universitätsstadt am Neckar
Tübingen (87.000 Einwohner, davon rund 26.000 Studenten) ist eine der ältesten Universitätsstädte in Deutschland. Die Eberhard Karls Universität wurde bereits 1477 gegründet. Unseren Rundgang beginnen wir am Rathaus am Marktplatz. Danach schauen wir uns u.a. die Neckarinsel mit Platanenallee und Neckarfront mit Hölderlinturm und Stiftskirche an. Natürlich steht auch Schloss Hohentübingen auf unserem Besuchsprogramm.

Driving in Germany: Bundesstraße B27 from Besigheim to Heilbronn - Neckar River Valley Scenic Drive
In this video you can drive along on the Bundesstraße B27 from the historical town of Besigheim to the city of Heilbronn. This part of the B27 is quite scenic as in part it follows the Neckar river through a narrow valley enclosed by steep cliffs decorated with vineyards.
Along the route are some scenic towns and cities worth visiting, including Lauffen am Neckar. Besigheim is also known for its historical old town and the traditional German 'Fachwerk' buildings and houses.
The B27 is one of Germany's longest federal routes (Bundesstraßen), running from the border with Switzerland in the South of Baden-Württemberg all the way to the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. The total length is about 673 kilometers.

Dilsberg Castle (German: Bergfeste Dilsberg) is a ruined castle located in Neckargemünd, Germany. It was built by the counts of Lauffen in the 12th century, but in the 14th century became part of the Electorate of the Palatinate. The castle became an administrative center for the Electoral Palatinate and thus a target in the wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, the castle fell into ruin and was used as a quarry. American writer Mark Twain visited the castle in the 1870s and wrote about it in A Tramp Abroad.
Opening hours: 1st April - 31st October,
Tuesday - Sunday and Bank Holidays: 10.00 am - 5.30 pm
Admission: Adults: € 2, reduced: € 1
Public guided tours (in German) take place from 1st May to
31st October on Sundays and Bank Holidays at 3.00 pm.

Radreise Neckartal-Radweg Marbach/N. nach Heidelberg 2021 Teil 1 bis Bad Wimpfen
Der Neckarradweg von Marbach nach Bad Wimpfen ist eine wunderschöne Strecke entlang des Flusses Neckar. Der Weg ist gut ausgebaut und bietet während der gesamten Strecke wunderschöne Ausblicke auf den Fluss sowie die umliegende Landschaft.
Die erste Sehenswürdigkeit ist das Schloss Marbach. Es ist ein beeindruckendes Renaissancebauwerk, das im 16. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde. Es ist möglich, das Schloss zu besichtigen und mehr über die Geschichte der Region zu erfahren.
Weiter entlang des Weges trifft man auf die Stadt Besigheim. Die Altstadt ist geprägt von Fachwerkhäusern und engen Gassen. Besonders sehenswert ist die Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul mit ihrem imposanten Glockenturm.
Ein weiteres Highlight des Neckarradwegs ist die Burg- und Festspielstadt Heilbronn. Hier gibt es neben der beeindruckenden Burgruine auch viele kulturelle Angebote, wie Theateraufführungen und Konzerte.
Die letzte Station auf dem Weg ist die historische Stadt Bad Wimpfen. Sie ist bekannt für ihre mittelalterliche Altstadt mit dem imposanten Wimpfener Stadtturm und dem Blauen Turm. Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.
Insgesamt ist der Neckarradweg von Marbach nach Bad Wimpfen eine wunderschöne Tour, die sowohl Naturliebhaber als auch Geschichtsinteressierte begeistern wird. Es gibt viele Sehenswürdigkeiten entlang des Weges zu entdecken und die Region hat eine lange und interessante Geschichte.

Between Stuttgart and Lauffen, the Neckar cuts a scenic, meandering, and in many places steep-sided, valley into fossiliferous Triassic limestones and Pleistocene travertine. Along the Neckar's valley in the Odenwald hills many castles can be found, including Hornberg Castle and Guttenberg Castle [de; lb; ru; uk] in Haßmersheim; the now-mothballed Obrigheim Nuclear Power Plant and the active Neckarwestheim Nuclear Power Plant are also located there.
