LAUFENBURG: 1 Village, 2 Countries: Between SWITZERLAND and GERMANY [Travel Guide]
Laufenburg is one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland… and also of Germany. How is it possible that this village is though part of two countries? Laufenburg was built at the river Rhine and has been under the rule of several powers until it ended up in today’s format. Laufenburg charms with its tranquility, the many alleys and beautiful houses. Both sides are similar, the Swiss one has though visibly more flags, while the German site does not. The two sides of Laufenburg are connected through a bridge, which allows easy switching between the two countries. Today, Laufenburg is part of Baden-Württemberg and the Canton of Aargau. The village was under the French rule, until it was then split, giving the larger part with the centre to the Canton Fricktal, which later merged into today’s canton of Aargau, while the part on the right side of the Rhine was given to the Grand-Duchy of Baden. Today, the village might be split into two countries, but feels like it was one: both sides keep the same name, Laufenburg Switzerland and Laufenburg Germany, people freely switch between both sides and the houses and image in both countries are the same. Laufenburg is perfect to combine with the nearby cities of Zürich and Basel. From Laufenburg, you even can take a train (Deutsche Bahn, that line is mostly on time) to Basel. This is the cheapest way for you to proceed from Laufenburg to Basel. There is another similar Swiss village that is also split into two parts, just further down the Rhine, you may visit Rheinfelden, that carries the same name on both sides of the river.

Laufenburg - One city two countries | 4K
Laufenburg is a twin city in Baden-Württemberg and the Swiss canton of Aargau. Even tho Laufenburg is located in two countries – Switzerland and Germany, it`s one city just divided by the river Rhine and connected with stone bridge.
The same name is not by accident, the now a days German and Swiss Laufenburg was used to be the same city. Napoleon divided the city in the early 19th century. Two bridges now link both cities.
Both cities together count approximately 12.500 inhabitants. 9000 life on the German part of Laufenburg and 3.500 on the swiss part.
Today, the two citiess are only separated by the river Rhine. Joint festivals breathe new life into the mediaeval lanes. Throughout the year, you can take a cross-border audio walking tour, the recorded commentary plunges walkers into the history of the sister cities of Laufenburg – which lie on the Upper Rhine, so atmospheric river cruises are a tempting option.
Picturesque Laufenburg is anything but usual. Experience history, culture and nature in a nutshell. Take a walk through city with Count Hans IV of Habsburg-Laufenburg and enter into the volatile history of the Pearl on the High Rhine.

Napoleon split the town in two over 200 years ago, but joint cross-border festivals are still an essential part of life in Laufenburg.
Two bridges now link both towns.
Today, the two towns are only separated by the Rhine. Joint festivals breathe new life into the mediaeval lanes.

1. Basler Fasnacht is the best Fasnact in Switzerland. The city of Basel celebrates it for 3 whole days. This is definitely the best event in Switzerland and worth seeing.

2. Zurich Fasnacht - The parade started at 2:30 PM that Sunday afternoon but I missed it. The terrible weather and the trafic that day was horrific. Here is a glimpse of the aftermath of the parade during Fasnacht in Zurich. The parade lasted roughly for an hour only. The Zürcher Fasnacht isn’t one of the biggest in Switzerland but it does brings life to the normally quiet, rainy and windy winter Sunday.

Laufenburg und Laufenburg
Die Stadt Laufenburg am Hochrhein wurde 1801 durch neue politische Grenzen in 2 Städte geteilt.
Am deutschen Rheinufer gab es fortan Klein Laufenburg, jetzt Laufenburg/ Baden, der auf Schweizer Seite liegende Stadtteil zu Laufenburg, heute Laufenburg AG (Aargau). Die beiden Städte sind mit einer Steinbrücke direkt verbunden und Festivitäten werden gemeinsam begannen.
Die beiden Laufenburgs zeichnen sich durch pittoreske Stadtansichten aus, bieten einige schönen Brunnen. Auf Schweizer Seite finden sich die Reste der Laufenburg. Der erhalte Bergfried ist begehbar und bietet schöne Aussichten.
Zu Laufenburg/ Baden gehört Hauenstein, die ehemals kleinste Stadt Deutschlands.
