Lamphun (northern Thailand): sightseeing, shopping and dining

Here comes the second part of our 2 days trip to the province Lamphun, close to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand:

We start out with some sightseeing at and around the Buddhist temple Wat Phra That Hariphunchai in the city of Lamphun itself. This temple's origins date from the 11th century but the central stupa is thought to originate in the 9th century:

Just across the street from the temple entrance there is a lovely market for clothes and various arts from the area, where we stop for shopping, and follow up by having a northern Thai dinner at a scenic spot outside the city. And next morning a good meal of Khao Soy before we're on the way back to Bangkok again. This special dish (with chicken) is highly recommended, and can also be found at some restaurants in Bangkok. On the way back to Bangkok we stop to buy various banana snacks on the roadside, a very Thai experience indeed.

Lampang, Thailand the Top Things To Do

Welcome to Lampang; the land where time stands still. A place where you can truly unwind and experience a unique and infectiously laid-back way of life that has remained largely unchanged for years. Despite all it has to offer, the area still receives comparatively few visitors, giving the area a wonderfully ‘undiscovered’ feel.
So join us as we take a look at just some of the highlights that Lampang has to offer.
Most visitors to Lampang are drawn to the province for its famed Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, the only centre of its kind in Thailand under Royal patronage. Founded in 1992, it currently cares for around 50 Asian elephants as well as housing six of the King’s ten white elephants. Visitors can learn about all about elephant conservation, watch one of the regular elephant performances, and the ever-popular elephant bath time. Elephant trekking, overnight homestays and even mahout training courses are also possible, though I’d strongly recommend making an advanced booking as places fill up fast.
The charming city of Lampang nestled in the broad river valley of the Wang River and surrounded by stunning mountain ranges is home to many impressive Laana era temples, including this one, Wat Phra Tat Lampang Luang located just 30 minutes from the city centre, and definitely worth a visit. Many of the temples in the area are constructed from timber and adorned with ornate carvings and decorations. So if visiting temples is your thing, then you really are spoilt for choice.
For many, travel in Thailand conjures up images of tuk tuks or long tail boats, but Lampang takes an altogether more relaxed approach to getting around. And the preferred method of travel? The good old fashioned horse and cart. So what better was to explore the city than by taking a leisurely ride through the city streets with your feet up in the back of a horse drawn carriage?
Lampang really is a gem in the crown of northern Thailand, so if relaxing riverside bars and restaurants, spectacular temples, friendly, laid-back locals and abundant wildlife and nature are your thing, then why not pay Lampang a visit. We’re sure you won’t regret it.

Lamphun, located in northern Thailand, is a charming province with a rich history, cultural heritage, and natural beauty. Here are 10 reasons to visit Lamphun:
1. Historical Significance: Lamphun boasts a long history, with archaeological evidence indicating that the area has been inhabited for over 1,400 years. The city was the capital of the Mon Kingdom of Hariphunchai, and you can explore historical sites such as Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, a revered temple with a history dating back over a thousand years.
2. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai: This ancient temple is Lamphun's most iconic landmark, known for its impressive Lanna architecture and a sacred chedi that is said to house relics of the Buddha. The temple grounds are peaceful and offer a glimpse into the region's religious and historical significance.
3. Lush Gardens and Parks: Lamphun is surrounded by natural beauty, including parks and gardens such as Buak Hard Public Park. Take a leisurely stroll, enjoy the greenery, and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere.
4. Cultural Festivals: Visit Lamphun during cultural festivals, such as the Lamphun Longan Festival, where you can experience traditional Thai performances, taste local delicacies, and celebrate the harvest season.

These reasons collectively make Lamphun an appealing destination for those seeking a blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and a relaxed atmosphere in northern Thailand.

Chiang Mai Bike Trips: Lamphun | Ancient City | Temples | Thailand

#Thailand #Lamphun #bike

Located about 25km south of Chiang Mai, Lamphun is one of Thailand’s smallest provincial capitals with a population of around 15,000. It was once ruled by Queen Camadevi in the 7th century after being founded by a hermit called Vasuthep, as the capital of the Haripunchai Kingdom, the last and most northerly Mon kingdom. It was constructed in the shape of a conch shell, following the Khuang River on its east side and divided by moats at the remaining points of the compass. In and around the Old Town lie many historic temples, walls, gates, and museums meaning that Lamphun makes for a great day out if you're ever in Chiang Mai.

LAMPHUN - THAILAND - AFTER SUNSET - THE BEST

I continue my exploration of Northern Thailand by traveling from Mae Hong Son to Lamphun. Ironically, both cities have the same name as the name of the province in which they are located.
Lamphun, Thailand…I would bet most travellers have not heard nor been to Lamphun and yet I really enjoyed my short stay in Lamphun. Among other things I conclude, after having done this vlog, that Lamphun has the best night markets of any destination that I travelled to in the course of this Asian trip.

Though essentially a suburb of Chiang Mai now, Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in the area and is home to some ancient buildings, relics of the old Hariphunchai kingdom.
