Immersive walking tour of the city of Lamego, Portugal, with detailed historical information and context! Located 350 km (217 miles) north of Lisbon and 130 km (80 miles) east of Porto, Lamego is nicknamed Monumental City, due to the numerous monuments it has.
Notable monuments include the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Sanctuary (Our Lady of Remedies), especially the 686 steps of the monumental staircase that leads up to the Shrine; the ancient Lamego Cathedral; the Lamego Castle; and the oldest church in Portugal, the 1400-year-old São Pedro de Balsemão Chapel, built by the Visigoths!

LAMEGO cidade Histórica do DOURO VINHATEIRO ???? - Portugal
LAMEGO - Cidade antiquíssima, datando já do tempo dos romanos, foi reconquistada definitivamente em 1057 por Fernando Magno de Leão aos mouros; quando os distritos foram instituídos em 1835 por uma reforma de Mouzinho da Silveira, Lamego foi inicialmente prevista como sede de distrito; mas nesse mesmo ano a sede do mesmo foi deslocada para Viseu, devido à sua posição mais central.
Foi em Lamego que teriam decorrido as lendárias Cortes de Lamego, onde teria sido feita a aclamação de D. Afonso Henriques como Rei de Portugal e se estabeleceram as Regras de Sucessão ao Trono.
É sede da diocese de Lamego (a única diocese portuguesa que não corresponde a uma capital de distrito), e no concelho são numerosos os monumentos religiosos, dos quais se destacam a Sé Catedral, a Igreja de São Pedro de Balsemão e o Santuário da Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, que dá também o nome a Romaria anual cujo dia principal é o 8 de Setembro, que é também o feriado municipal.
Conhecida também pela sua gastronomia, nas qual se destacam os seus presuntos, o cabrito assado com arroz de forno e pela produção de vinhos, nomeadamente vinho do Porto, de cuja Região Demarcada faz parte, e pelos vinhos espumantes.

In The Mood for Gerês & Douro: The Summer Edition | Best Places to Travel in Portugal
Gerês and Douro, two jewels of Northern Portugal and summer destinations you cannot miss. Recently, I set foot in Gerés for the first time. It's been in my radar for a while, being a nature lover. And what a sumptuously green sanctuary it is. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is an absolute outdoor paradise, for lovers of nature retreats, hiking, exploring (or simply just unplugging and swimming in lakes). This is definitely one of my favourite places in Portugal, and a sparkling standout in the Minho province. That said, we tried some delicious Vinho Verde in the region, too.
What's more, I've revisited the Douro Valley, this time at the height of the summer. Douro is notorious for soaring temperatures during the summertime, but it's also an incredible experience witnessing this UNESCO World Heritage landscape working its full summer magic. Sérgio, from Portugal EV Tours, did wonders and toured us around the Douro (again!) in the most sustainable fashion, accompanied by the wine expert Salvador Sommelier.
And just when I thought this trip would end so soon, friends joined us in Porto and we're back on the Douro River again. This time, I realised what ties this journey altogether: kindness. Little acts of kindness, they can send ripples throughout time, and we reap them through the connections we make, the friendships we build, and the passions we pursue. Travel, explore, learn, connect, and then, be kind. ❤️

Senior Travelers: The highlight of a trip to Lamego is the Cathedral. If you are in good enough shape, try to take the stairs down as it is a beautiful trip offering wonderful views. If not, you can visit the cathedral and take in the views from the plaza up top; however, you will be missing some of the beauty. The plaza below is fairly flat, as well as much of the surrounding downtown area.
Solo Travelers: As with almost all of Portugal, it is a very safe and friendly environment. I found it easy to navigate with a walking map.

Lamego is a city located in the Viseu District of Portugal. With a rich history dating back to ancient times, Lamego is known for its cultural heritage and impressive architecture. The city was first settled by the Celts, and later conquered by the Romans and Moors. In the 12th century, Lamego became an important religious center and was the site of the coronation of the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques.

Lamego Portugal Aerial Tour
Esta semana visitamos Lamego. Este video descreve a cidade de Lamego vista do ar, e na proxima semana será a vez de uma visita pelas ruas e monumentos de Lamego.
Lamego tem a sua remota origem neste morro onde está o castelo. Sería então a capital da civitas romana dos Coilarni durante (sécs. 1 a 5). Seguindo-se depois no período suevo-visigodo (sécs. 5-7), quando a cidade foi promovida a sede episcopal, seguida da ocupação àrabe (sécs. 8-11), até que em 1057 é reconquistada por Fernando Magno de Leão e nos Sec. 12 é reconstruido o Castelo e no séc. 13 fica reconstruída a cintura muralhada da cidade e desenvolve-se o Bairro do Castelo.
E é aqui na parte baixa de Lamego que surge um segundo núcleo em redor de uma capela dedicada a S.Sebastião, que se manteve mesmo durante a ocupação árabe. É a partir desta capela que é restaurada a diocese de Lamego com a construção da Sé entre 1159-1175. Esta Sé de origem romanica sofreu uma infinidade de alterações ao longo dos séculos, mantendo apenas a torre sineira primitiva. Desta forma Lamego desenvolve-se na idade média em dois núcleos bem definidos: Um na parte baixa associado ao couto da Sé e ao Paço Episcopal e o outro civil no morro do Castelo.
Ao fundo vemos o santuário da Senhora dos Remédios. Vemos este enorme escadório barroco que sobe o monte de Santo Estevão em linha recta, simbolizando a ascensão, já que a montanha era vista como o ponto mais próximo do céu.
Em tempos medievais existia no mesmo local da actual igreja, uma pequena ermida dedicada a Santo Estêvão, mandada reedificar no século XVI, pelo Bispo de Lamego, D. Manuel de Noronha.
Este havia trazido de Roma em 1568 uma imagem de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, cujo culto se incrementou a partir do século XVIII motivando assim a construção de uma nova igreja que pudesse receber um numero crescente de fiéis.
A assim este Santuário é iniciado em 1750 vai-se desenvolvendo em várias fases até ao séc. XX:
A Festa da Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, celebra-se a 8 de setembro, com a sua procissão puxada a caros de bois carregando figurantes e figuras bíblicas em tamanho natural, a chamada procissão do Triunfo.
Ao contrário do Santuário do Bom Jesus de Braga, aqui existe de facto uma ligação directa entre o centro da cidade e o escadório do santuário. O movimento gerado pelo plano urbanístico de Haussman em Paris durante a segunda metade do séc. XIX influenciou também o urbanismo das principais cidades portuguesas com a abertura de alamedas procurando alinhamentos com edificações monumentais revalorizando estes monumentos, isolando-os e criando conexões visuais entre eles. Em Lamego foi a ligação visual desde o Paço Episcopal e o topo do Santuário.

LAMEGO NOSSA SENHORA DOS REMEDIOS SANTO ESTEVAO DOURO PORTUGAL (PART 13) WILDFIRES!
Lamego is a delightful town set amidst the vineyard covered hills of Portugals Douro region. The town is famed for its magnificent baroque stairway that climbs the steep Santo Estevao hill to the beautiful Nossa Senhora dos Remedios church.
Lamego may be small but it has an extensive history. It was here that Alfonso I was crowned as the first king of Portugal in 1139. Later, Lamego prospered during the 16th and 18th centuries as a wine-producing region, and the town is still a centre for Raposeira sparkling wines.
This history is reflected in varied sights including an ancient Moorish castle, the gothic cathedral, and elegant 18th century villas. Running the length of the town is the Avenida, a grand boulevard lined with monuments, open-air cafes, and market stalls selling the region’s traditional smoked meats. The Avenida captures the essence of Lamego; relaxing, peaceful and distinctly Portuguese.
Lamego makes for a fascinating day trip and is equally suited as a base to explore the Douro Valley region.
