Russia: Saint Petersburg Metro, ALL stations (orange line)

In IGOR in Russia: Metro edition series I'll visit every metro station on every line in Saint Petersburg. Orange line is also known as line 4. Join me!

Metro is the most convenient way to travel in Saint Petersburg. It costs 45 rubles (0,6 euros, 0.8 dollars) per trip, the trip ends by exiting the station you need to get off at.

To travel you can buy a token, buy Podorozhnik travel card (load money on it) or pay with your phone at the gate's readers. When entering, if you're carrying a bigger bag, it will be screened for safety reasons. You can hop on and hop off on as many stations you like without exiting the station (some last stations require you to exit the station, you will have to buy a new ticket to get back on in this case).

In this video we will take a ride in the metro station of St. Petersburg, Russia. The video resembles a live camera. We will take a closer look at the passengers of the Russian metro. Metro a in Russia is different from other metro stations in the world.

The first projects of the Petersburg subway were developed at the end of the 19th century, but at that stage the electric tram was the competitor of the metro, which eventually won. For the first time, the construction of the metro in Leningrad was violated on the eve of the war, but during the blockade and later there was no time for the metro. As a result, the construction of the first stage was carried out in 1946-1955. The southern section of the Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya (red, first) line was built - from the Moscow railway station (Vosstaniya Square) to the main industrial zone in the south-west of the city (Avtovo). The metro was actively built in the following decades, and now includes 5 lines and 63 stations, the total length of its tracks is 112 km, and in terms of passenger traffic it is in 12th place in the world.
Petersburg is a very specific city in general and with a huge number of highlights. Well, what is the city - such is the subway.

The first thing that catches your eye in the St. Petersburg metro is the prohibitive length of the escalators. In terms of average depth, the St. Petersburg metro is the deepest in the world: 56 out of 62 stations have a depth of over 50 meters (and the deepest are 70-80m), the depth of the tunnels reaches 110m.

This is caused, firstly, by difficult marshy soils, and secondly, by the inability to adequately fit the metro bridge into the center of St. Petersburg (considering that the width of the Neva is about 800 meters, the bridge would be almost like in Novosibirsk). And I must say, trips on St. Petersburg escalators are really exhausting!

However, we are talking about the average depth. There are separate stations at a depth of 80m or more in other subways.

Petersburg subway car. The cars here are locally produced and have a slightly different design (note that the door from the driver's cab leads to the salon). There are few advertisements - it seems that from the post-Soviet subways there are fewer only in Minsk. The metro itself is much cleaner, less stuffy and less noisy compared to the Moscow metro. In general, the St. Petersburg metro looks somehow more modern. However, there are a lot of people there, at some stations the crowd is worse than in Moscow.

The most famous feature of the St. Petersburg metro is the horizontal lifts, or closed-type stations. That is, not only the car, but also the station vestibule is equipped with doors. According to one version, this was done for the safety of passengers, according to another - for flood protection:

The project did not justify itself because of the difficulties of operation, and such stations were not built in Leningrad-Petersburg anymore, but later horizontal elevators appeared in some metros of the far abroad (Copenhagen, French Rennes, Singapore, etc.).

Another interesting feature is the lobbies. In the historical center, many vestibules are built into the first floors of ancient buildings (for example, Gostiny Dvor) and are not visible. And the lobbies of the first stage of the metro are distinguished by their size and pomposity, which even Moscow would envy.
For example, the lobby of the station Ploshchad Vosstaniya opposite the Moscow railway station.

An interesting feature of the interchange nodes: escalators leading directly from the middle of one station to the beginning of another. There are no such crossings in Moscow, and the sight of this Muscovite is slightly blown away.

Trams! (Postcard 32 from St Petersburg)

I was sat at home on Saturday morning reading a fascinating book about St Petersburg by Catriona Kelly (Professor of Russian at the University of Oxford). As the book started to discuss public transport I realised that I had yet to travel on any of St Petersburg's trams. Well, this problem was easily remedied and resulted in today's vlog!

Eду на работу на трамвае по улицам Ярослава Гашека, Купчинской, Димитрова. Купчино - очень спальный район в котором ничего нет , кроме жилья, поликлиник, детсадов, школ, магазинов, парков и т. д и т. п.
I go to work by tram along the streets of Yaroslav Gashek, Kupchinskaya, Dimitrov. Kupchino is a very residential area in which there is nothing but housing, clinics, kindergartens, schools, shops, parks, etc., etc.

(ASMR) Трамвайный Петербург /Tram travel in St. Petersburg
