City in Russia
Irkutsk is a city on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. The river embankment is lined with hurches, including the Epiphany Cathedral (Sobor Bogoyavleniya), with gilded onion domes, and the Spasskaya Church, with its soaring bell tower.

The restored neoclassical Moskovskie Vorota arch is also by the water. Near Kirov Square, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum has ancient icons and more recent Russian artworks.

Polar Ural railway station

The Polar Ural railway station is located at the intersection of the Arctic Circle and the border between Europe and Asia. On this railroad you can drive from Moscow to Labytnangi (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous district). This is the only active section of the Transpolar railway that was conceived by Stalin. Here, parallel to the rails, the Sob river begins its path.

Another day in the most depressed and coldest city in the world | Travel to Russia to Vorkuta

How did I get into Vorkuta? I went on a trip to the Russian north. There is a lot of gas and oil here. But people live in poverty. I don't understand why this is so ...
I was lucky enough to drive on the only completed section of the railway, passing through Salekhard and Igarka, between Vorkuta and Labytnangi.
People still live in this city and in these houses. A lot of gas and oil are sold in this country. But people live in such houses and earn $ 300-900 a month. Vorkuta most depressed town!

Stalin's failed GULAG: The Trans-Polar Railway (Construction No. 501)

The Trans-Polar is also referred to variously as Dead Road, and Stalinbahn, is an incomplete railway in Northern Siberia. The railway was a project of the Soviet Gulag system that took place from 1947 until Stalin's death in 1953. Construction was coordinated via two separate Gulag projects, the 501 Railroad beginning on the River Ob and 503 Railroad beginning on the River Yenisey, part of a grand design of Joseph Stalin to span a railroad across northern Siberia to reach the Soviet Union's easternmost territories.

The purpose of the railway was threefold: to facilitate the export of nickel from neighboring Norilsk; to provide work for thousands of post-war prisoners; to connect the deep-water seaports of Igarka and Salekhard with the western Russian railway network. With the Soviet industry relocated to western Siberia during World War II, it was seen as a strategic advantage to use the northward-flowing river systems to deliver supplies to Arctic Ocean ports. Salekhard was on the Ob River, downstream from Novosibirsk and Omsk, and Igarka was on the Yenisei. Connecting these two rivers was beneficial for transferring goods between cities and regions.

A rebuilt section of the railway between Nadym and Novy Urengoy on the east bank of the Nadym River is still in operation, as is the extreme western section connecting Labytnangi and the railway to Vorkuta. The section from Salekhard to Nadym is planned to be rebuilt, including a new bridge over the Ob to connect Salekhard to the rest of the Russian railway system via Labytnangi.

Me and my friend Kenji hitchhiked along the Trans-Polar Railway and explored some of the abandoned labor camps located next to the railway. We started out our journey in Novyy Urengoy and finished it in Salekhard. Along our way, we visited 2 forced labor camps of GULAG.

Enjoy!

Riding Polar Express Train Across Arctic

Russian Arctic territories were actively developed by during Stalin's reign. Thousands of GULAG prisoners were sent to limitless tundra to built new cities and roads. One of the greatest incomplete Soviet Project known as 501 Railroad was a part of the Transpolar Mainline that supposed to connect the remotest Siberian villages and cities with the USSR mainland. Nowadays, Transpolar Mainline partially operates. Here a regular passenger and freight service. I went straight to tundra to ride this one of the northernmost railway routes on our planet from Vorkuta to Labytnangi. Enjoy!

Train travel in Russia - From Moscow to Magadan

In this journey from Moskou to Magadan, Jelle visited numerous areas of Russia. It's time for the trip back, and he choses to take the train for it. Taking a train in Russia, is like a small incursian in Russian daily lives.
Original title: Het spoor terug
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Nekonečné pláně za polárním Uralem – v létě království komárů, v zimě krutý mráz a sněhové bouře. Za Stalina sem posílali desetitisíce vězňů Gulagu, dnes se zde těží většina ruského plynu. Zdánlivě nevlídné prostředí poloostrovu Jamal na severní Sibiři obývá i dávný národ pastevců sobů - Něnců.
