Kiel is a port city on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. In the old town, the rebuilt, medieval St. Nikolai Church hosts classical concerts. Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse are streets lined with shops. Along the Kiel Fjord, the Maritime Museum displays model ships and nautical instruments in a former fish auction hall. Cruise ships dock at the Ostseekai Terminal in Germania Harbor.
Some locals admit that Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a city centre that's grottenhässlich (ugly as sin). And unfortunately it is true; it was obliterated during WWII by bombing raids on its U-boat pens and then rapidly rebuilt. Today, it is a series of charmless indoor malls linked by pedestrian bridges. However, Kiel's grand harbour continues on as it has for centuries and this, along with the city's museums, should be the focus of your visit. Huge ferries transport millions of passengers to and from Scandinavia, while summer sees locals strolling the long waterfront promenade.
Kiel is a maritime city and has been for a long time, it remains one of Germany main passenger ports (besides Travemünde and Rostock) and as the Baltic endpoint of the Kiel Canal plays an important role in shipping. The beginning of the end of German monarchism happened here when in 1918 the admirals wanted the fleet to sail out for one last glorious but militarily pointless battle and the sailors told their superiors where they could shove that idea, ultimately culminating in revolution and the formation of Soviets.
During the Second World War, Kiel was severely bombed, because of its submarine-producing shipyard. Both civil and military ships are being built in Kiel nowadays and the tall cranes dominate the eastern shore of the Förde (fjord).
The bombing destroyed almost all historic buildings in Kiel; even the older looking buildings were built after WW2. So, if you come to the Kieler Schloss (Kieler Castle) don't be disappointed. There isn't much left of the original building. During the rebuilding after WW2, mostly modern architecture was used.

Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, with a population of 240,832 (June 2014).
Kiel lies approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Hamburg. Due to its geographic location in the north of Germany, the southeast of the Jutland peninsula, and the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea, Kiel has become one of the major maritime centres of Germany. For instance, the city is known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the biggest sailing event in the world. The Olympic sailing competitions of the 1936 and the 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Kiel.
Kiel has also been one of the traditional homes of the German Navy's Baltic fleet, and continues to be a major high-tech shipbuilding centre. Located in Kiel is the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) (de) at the University of Kiel. Kiel is an important sea transport hub, thanks to its location on the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde) and the busiest artificial waterway in the world, Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal). A number of passenger ferries to Sweden, Norway, Russia, and other countries operate from here. Moreover, today Kiel harbour is an important port of call for cruise ships touring the Baltic Sea.
Kiel was one of the founding cities of original European Green Capital Award in 2006. In 2005 Kiel's GDP per capita was €35,618, which is well above Germany's national average, and 159% of the European Union's average.
Within Germany and parts of Europe, the city is known for its leading handball team, THW Kiel. The city is home to the University of Kiel (established in 1665).
The name of the city is most likely derived from the wedge form of its bay (Keil in German)

Welcome back to Germany everybody! After visiting this beautiful country last year we have been planning our return trip - this time to German Bavaria to chase mountains and lakes

Our journey started in Bratislava, Slovakia where we boarded a bus to Vienna Airport, caught a flight to Stutgart, Germany and drove across the country towards Eibsee Lake - big travel day but so worth it for the views of Zugspitze Mountain.
After checking into our cute Airbnb we found a German pub serving pizza, crashed for the night and woke up to miserable weather. But we still wanted to conquer a German mountain here in the Bavarian Alps...it just happens to be Wank mountain...yep.
What a shocking day here in Germany - but so worth it!

Ostseebad Laboe | Promenade, Strand & Marine-Ehrenmal - Das Ostseebad Laboe [laˈbøː] ist eine Gemeinde in der Probstei im Kreis Plön in Schleswig-Holstein am Ostufer der Kieler Förde, ca. 10 km nördlich der Landeshauptstadt Kiel.
Von Kiel kannst Du mit dem Auto, dem Bus oder der Fähre, mit den Fördeschiffen der Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK), fahren.

Laboe is a municipality in the district of Plön, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated on the Baltic Sea coast, approximately 10 km northeast of Kiel. The Laboe Naval Memorial is located within the municipality, as is the submarine U-995. The city coat of arms depicts a swan and is based on its name, as Laboe means swan in the extinct Slavic Polabian language.

Das Ostseebad Laboe ist eine Gemeinde in der Probstei im Kreis Plön in Schleswig-Holstein am Ostufer der Kieler Förde. Die Gemeinde ist ein Wohn- und Urlaubsort und schmückt sich mit dem Slogan „Die Sonnenseite der Kieler Förde“. Laboe liegt ca. 10 km nördlich der Landeshauptstadt Kiel. Im zentral örtlichen System des Landes Schleswig-Holstein ist die Gemeinde am äußersten Ende der östlichen Siedlungsachse der Kieler Förde, eine der meistbefahrenen Wasserstraßen der Welt, gelegen. Etwas entfernt im Norden beginnt um die dänischen Inseln Langeland und Ærø die so genannte „Dänische Südsee“. Laboe liegt am Westufer der feld-, wald- und seenreichen Landschaft Probstei und gehört somit historisch zu Holstein.

Die meisten Besucher kommen wegen der schönen Aussicht, die sie auf dem 72 Meter hohen Turm genießen können. Doch das am 30. Mai 1936 eingeweihte Marine-Ehrenmal kann viel mehr: Es erzählt seine wechselhafte Geschichte von einer Pilgerstätte für Menschen mit rechtem Gedankengut bis hin zu einem Mahnmal gegen Krieg und Verbrechen.
Der Deutsche Marinebund als Eigentümer des umstrittenen Bauwerks leistet seit vielen Jahren Aufklärungsarbeit und bietet Führungen sowie Rallyes für Schüler an.
