For travelers looking for an adventure off the beaten path, Laayoune makes a wonderful choice. The city is only about an hour and a half long flight from Casablanca yet has a feel all of its own. People who live in Laayoune are a mix of Moroccans and Saharawi. Women in Laayoune wear a brightly colored dress called a melafa. A melafa is most similar to an Indian sari and is often worn with a long sleeve shirt and leggings underneath. The language also changes. Like the north, Spanish is widely spoken as a second language and most people speak either Moroccan Arabic or Hassaniya.

Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.
Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Au bord de l'océan Atlantique et aux portes du Sahara, la région de Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra appelée la région des sables est la rencontre entre sable de plage et sable du désert qui accueille les visiteurs dans un décor naturellement splendide et varié.
Cette région se situe en majeure partie sur le territoire contesté du Sahara dans le Sud marocain. Elle est limitée au sud par la région d'Eddakhla-Oued Eddahab, au nord par la région de Guelmim-Oued Noun, à l'est par la Mauritanie et à l'ouest par l'océan Atlantique.
La région de Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, elle abrite 367 758 habitants soit 1,1% de la population nationale étendus sur une superficie totale de 139 480 km2, soit 19,62 % de la superficie nationale.
Cette région est un bon exemple de développement régional, bénéficient non seulement d’une faveur administratif et avantages fiscaux concédés aux entrepreneurs et investisseurs ont permis cet élan mais aussi cette ville a commencé à changer l’image urbaine, appuyé sur une croissance démographique et sur son nouveau port.
Émergée du désert, l’effort de l’Etat en faveur de cette province est orienté également vers la réalisation des valeurs.

Welcome back to another video everyone, today we find ourselves in Western Sahara or Moroccan Sahara as some may call it. Western Sahara is a region thats been in contention between 2 forces, the moroccan forces, and the polisario (or the native saharan people's liberation army) This territory is classified as a UN conflict zone, one of 30+ conflicts recognized by the UN today.
The region hasn't experienced any fighting since a cease fire which took place over 40 years ago. The purpose of this video was to explore Laayoune, the capital city in the Western Sahara territory. I never thought I would experience such a place, and I got to do so with a friend of mine I randomly met while exploring Morocco.
Everyone in this region was extremely hospitable, kind, and caring- the saharans, and moroccans alike. This is one of multiple videos I'll release regarding my experience here in Western Sahara.

About Laayoune: Laayoune or El Aaiún is the largest city of the disputed territory of Western Sahara and de facto administered by Morocco. The modern city is thought to have been founded by the Spanish colonizer Antonio de Oro in 1938. In 1940, Spain designated it as the capital of the Spanish Sahara. Laâyoune (El Aaiún) is the capital of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region administered by Morocco under the supervision of the UN peace-keeping mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The town is divided in two by the dry river of Saguia el-Hamra. On the south side is the old lower town, constructed by Spanish colonists. A cathedral from that era is still active; its priests serve this city and Dakhla further south. Most people in Laayoune have Moroccan heritage. // Western Sahara (Arabic: الصحراء الغربية aṣ-Ṣaḥrā al-Gharbiyyah; Berber languages: Taneẓroft Tutrimt; Spanish and French: Sahara Occidental) is a disputed territory on the northwest coast and in the Maghreb region of North and West Africa, partially controlled by the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and partially occupied by neighboring Morocco. Its surface area amounts to 266,000 square kilometres (103,000 sq mi). It is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, mainly consisting of desert flatlands.
