2023 El Salvador travel guide | Top 10 Destinations in El Salvador | El Salvador travel 2023 | El Salvador travel guide

El Salvador frequently goes unnoticed even by overlanding travelers since it is hidden at the bottom of Central America on the route to nowhere. Which is a shame because it has just as many captivating features as its more well-known neighbors, including Mayan ruins, avenues of smoking volcanoes, tranquil Spanish colonial villages nestled in flower-filled valleys, and long, broad expanses of surf-friendly Pacific coastline. You may tour the most picturesque locations at your leisure in a few days because it is around the same size as New Jersey.

10. Tazumal.
Archaeologists believe that Tazumal was first inhabited about the year 5,000 BCE and was inhabited until the 13th century when it was abandoned. Tazumal is the most spectacular Mayan ruin in El Salvador. In the 1940s and 1950s, the architectural complex was excavated and completely rebuilt; nonetheless, many of the ruins have not been investigated to this day.

9. Playa El Tunco.
The waves on the rocky, black beaches are greatest in the early morning hours. Welcome to this unique beach town, which consists of only two streets and is particularly popular with backpackers and surfers. When the tide is low, you can go exploring in the beach caves or stroll the charming alleys.

8. Suchitoto.
This once-colonial city is located to the northeast of the capital, San Salvador, and it is well worth the trip. Although it was severely damaged during the Civil War (which lasted from 1980 through 1992), it is currently a popular mountain vacation destination and a center of culture on a national scale; its streets are constantly being filled with art and cuisine festivals.

7. Ruta de las Flores.
This route, which gets its name from the wildflowers that grow down the side of the road and which are at their peak from November to February, takes you through some of the most picturesque towns and villages in El Salvador.

Number 6. Playa El Esteron.
There is a wonderful section of shore here in El Salvador that, for whatever reason, isn't as popular as many of the other coastlines in the country. The absence of the raucous backpackers and other beachgoers that are typically found at this location has resulted in calmer waves and a more peaceful atmosphere.

5. Lake Ilopango.
A freshwater lake today occupies the spot in central El Salvador that was once occupied by an active volcano around 1,500 years ago. At an elevation of 1,450 feet and surrounded by steep cliffs, it is a popular destination for people who enjoy sailing and diving. The cone was fractured by an eruption somewhere between the years CE 410 and CE 535.

4. Montecristo National Park.
This national park represents nature at its most intense, from the highest mountain to the lowest valleys. The park covers an area that spans an incredible 7,933 square miles. It has the appearance of a long-lost world, with a dense canopy of oaks and laurel trees rising up to a height of up to 100 feet, with mushrooms, lichens, and mosses growing rampantly across the forest floor.

3. Puerta del Diablo.
The history is dreary – it's full of death and sorrow – but the vistas are spectacular and inspiring now, which ensures that there will always be a steady stream of tourists. The Devil's Door is a rock formation in El Salvador that is made up of two very tall rocks that make a window out over the surrounding verdant environment.

2. Santa Ana.
It is approximately 65 kilometers from the capital city of San Salvador to Santa Ana, which is the second largest city in the country. The coffee trade is responsible for the city's enormous prosperity, which can be seen in the picturesque streets and buildings that dot the landscape. It has a majestic air about it, and because of the city's overall attractiveness, there is a thriving cultural scene.

1. Coatepeque Caldera.
Lago de Coatepeque is one of the major lakes in the country and fills a volcanic caldera that was formed tens of thousands of years ago. This makes it significantly older than Ilopango. It is a miraculous sight to behold as you approach the crater from the highway that runs along the ridge of the crater. Surrounded by steep slopes, the clear blue water drops 394 feet.

El Salvador has had an interesting if not troubling history in the past few decades. But despite that, it has remained a tourist destination because of its abundance of amazing natural beauty, old-world culture, wildlife, and more. And, what might be most surprising to hear… El Salvador has become world famous for being an incredible place for surfing! In this video, we take you through some of the best things to do and see in El Salvador.

Despite it being a small place, we chose to split up the video into three sections – each is dedicated to a separate region of the country. But fortunately, the country is small and accessible enough so that you don’t have to choose only one or two of these regions. You can easily spend time in all of them, engaging in all types of fun and sun-soaked activities. El Salvador is also known for having many volcanoes. Some of them you can drive in, some you can hike on, and some you can admire from nearby. And the country is full of verdant hills, beautiful jungles, and a huge variety of wildlife, especially birds.

Nature lovers will absolutely adore traveling around El Salvador. As well foodies, as the country offers authentic, tasty, and hearty food that will make your mouth water. El Salvador Travel Video Guide

El Salvador Travel Video Guide - El Salvador sneaks up on you: in lefty lounge bars in San Salvador, at sobering museums and war memorials, and along lush cloud-forest trails; it's a place of remarkable warmth and intelligence, made all the more appealing for being so unexpected. Travellers tend to skip El Salvador, wooed by marquee destinations such as Guatemala and Costa Rica, and unnerved by stories of civil war and gang violence. But the war ended almost 20 years ago, and crime, while serious, is almost exclusively played out between rival gangs; tourists are virtually never involved.

El Salvador Travel Fact: And though El Salvador has fewer protected areas than its neighbors, you get them practically to yourself -- including pristine forests, active volcanoes and sparkling lakes. The only place you might find a crowd is on Punta Roca, El Salvador's most famous surfing spot -- it happens to be one of the best right point breaks in the world, yet is a ghost town compared to lesser swells in Costa Rica and elsewhere. And when it comes to cities, none in Central America is smarter or cooler than San Salvador, with first-rate universities, museums and galleries, a vibrant bar and live-music scene, and an array of progressive NGOs, both local and international.

Los 5 MEJORES HOTELES de PLAYA de EL SALVADOR

Estos son 5 de los mejores hoteles de playa de El Salvador. ¿Cuál es tu favorito?

8 Dollars in San Salvador! (El Salvador Travel 2022)

San Salvador is the lively capital city of El Salvador and it’s such a fun city to explore. There’s music everywhere, more ice cream shops than we’ve ever seen anywhere, pupusas on every other corner, and the shouts of market vendors all over.
Contrasting the fun chaos of the city center, there are quiet and upscale neighborhoods with fancy shopping malls, world-class dining, and laid-back coffee shops. All with dominant views of nearby volcanos and vibrant green forests surrounding the city, and it’s all under an hour away from the ocean! It’s a fun place to be with a lot of contrast from one area to the next.

All of that diversity in neighborhoods leads to a large gap in what you’ll pay for things from one place to the next. A classy hotel in Santa Tecla will easily run you $100-$140 per night or more, for instance, while a simple room near the city center can be as low as $10-$15, maybe even less.

That big of a gap goes for pretty much everything across the board in this city. In the markets, you can find locally made products for some of the best prices we’ve seen (that’s what we focused on in this video!), while imported products at international stores like Wal-Mart are higher than what you’ll find in many parts of the US!

Keep in mind that the main currency in El Salvador is the US dollar, and the secondary currency is Bitcoin! San Salvador is also very international in many parts and has just about every big franchise you can think of. A gallon of milk at Wal-Mart in El Salvador is over $5.A Domino’s pizza is $10-$15.
Plates at sit-down, nice restaurants for more than $15-$30.
Some children’s playsets in Wal-Mart are $100 or more. Coffee at many of the upscale coffee shops are $4-$5.
McDonald’s combos are around $7-$8
Pair of jeans at the mall for $20-$40

Expect to pay as much or more as you might in the US, Canada, or Europe for imported products if you’re shopping at gas station chains, fancy malls, or stores.
Meanwhile, in the markets, we found things for the following prices: Bagged water for 15 cents.
Pirated DVDs for 30-50 cents.
Children’s toys for $1.
A box of 50 face masks for $1.
3 delicious pupusas for less than $1.
Energy drinks for 50 cents or less.
T-Shirts for $1-$3
Packs of socks for $1-$2.
Cups of coffee at local ‘mom & pop’ bakeries for 50 cents.
Plates at non-franchise Japanese and Chinese restaurants for $4-$5. (Actually quite good and in most decent-sized cities)
Plates at one of the many cafeteria-style buffets serving up local favorites for less than $5.

Things like Aspirin, Garlic pills, and other typical medicines are often sold on the buses in packets for $1. Helpful!
The contrast can be huge! Things can get pretty expensive for sure.

If you’re wondering about the cost of a few other things:
Ubers are cheap! Around $4 or less around the city. Too cheap in fact, some Uber drivers will cancel the trip around El Salvador because they aren’t getting enough to make it worth the gas and time. (Gas is pretty high in El Salvador, about standard with most of Latin America) It helps sometimes if you message the Uber Driver right away and let them know you’ll be adding in a generous tip.

Taxis are usually around the same, a little more with the tip.
‘Pirate taxis’ are the unofficial taxis and they’re cheaper. You’ll see them all over. Don’t recommend taking those though, to be on the safe side.

Public transportation on the school buses can be as low as 20 cents per ride in the city, and as low as 75 cents from one town to the next. With that price though, comes a lot of crowds and sometimes a bumpy ride. (Mini-buses make for a smoother ride, often with AC, and might run you a few dollars per ride)

Haircuts are cheap and well done. After getting our haircuts twice each in the country, we paid as little as $3.50 and as much as only $5 before the tip!

If you’d like to know about any other prices ask in the comments! :)
