20 Best Things To Do in Cuenca Ecuador!

For details, logistics, prices, and directions, be sure to see our complete Cuenca Travel Guide:

These 20 best things to do in #Cuenca #Ecuador shows our personally-curated list of what we find to be Cuenca's best #travel experiences. This colonial city in the Andes has many fun activities, interesting museums, beautiful churches, fascinating Inca ruins, great shopping opportunities, local markets, and more. The Amaru Biopaque wildlife reserve shows off Ecuador's native species while a trip to Baños offers a luxury-for-less spa day.

Add to that great Cuencan cuisine and local beer, then you'll start understanding what continues to draw us back to this fine city in the Andes. It's an awesome travel destination! And there are so many fun things to do in Cuenca and the surrounding Azuay province. Day trips and tours from Cuenca allow travelers to get further into the Andes, where there is hiking in Cajas National Park, waterfalls, artisan towns, horseback riding, and even more Inca ruin sites to visit.

Cuenca makes such a great place to travel in Ecuador and we hope this travel video helps to highlight all the best things to do in Cuenca!

Ecuador - NOT What We Expected!

Is traveling to Ecuador on your Bucket List? It wasn’t for us, but this small South American country completely blew us away. Stepping into the Amazon jungle, visiting one of the world's most active volcanoes (Cotopaxi), swimming in some of the countless waterfalls and hot springs in the Andes mountains, and cruising off the Pacific coastline to witness the yearly Humpback whale migration, it was definitely a trip for the books. We fell in love with the warm and welcoming people of Ecuador, the environmental diversity, and the natural beauty of the land. Ecuador is the perfect destination for travelers looking to get off the beaten path and experience so much of what South America has to offer.

Colonial town in the AMAZON ??? Gualaquiza Ecuador

Ecuador's Amazon is diverse but Gualaquiza was like nothing I expected.
Only three hours from Cuenca, it's possible to go for the day but you'll want to stay a few days. It's a comfortable Amazon town with a delicious market and not far from lots of interesting tours and traditional Ecuadorian food.

/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Ecuador. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around Ecuador. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful and underrated Ecuador truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

BEST AMAZON JUNGLE TOUR - TARANTULAS, PINK DOLPHINS, & TAPIRS // ECUADOR TRAVEL VLOG

The Amazon Jungle in Ecuador is one of the most alive and dangerous places we have ever been! Pink river dolphins, piranhas, tapirs, sloths, howler monkeys, tarantulas, snakes, and SO many more animals and insects call Cuyabeno Reserve there home, and we spent four days here! We ate ants, swam with who-knows-what, and paddle boarded through a proper rainforest rainstorm.

Cuyabeno is possibly the best place to tour the Amazon, and the lodge we stayed at was tucked away far away from any other tour companies. We felt like we were properly in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, with a 2.5 hour boat ride between us and the nearest road. We got some epic amazon jungle drone footage to show just how massive and dense the amazon jungle truly is, and had an AMAZING time carefully exploring this bucketlist destination.

Our tour:
This video was not sponsored by Waita Lodge, but we cannot recommend them enough!

Ecuador Invited Us!

The cloud forest awaits...

We visited Ecuador once before but quickly realized there was so much more to be discovered in this beautifully diverse South American country. From adventuring through the cloud forests and discovering tiny glass frogs at Mashpi Lodge, to exploring historic Hacienda Zuleta nestled in the Avenue of Volcanoes among ancient ceremonial pyramids, hiking through the rugged landscape of Cuenca dotted with wild alpacas and horses roaming the plains, and participating in an enchanting Shamanic blessing with the Saraguro people in Loja, we feel like we truly have a more complete understanding of this incredible country after this trip.

We are thrilled to have been sponsored by the Ecuador Tourism Board to produce this video, and to help launch the Ecuador Film Residency program for content creators around the world. To find out more about the Ecuador Film Residency click here:

I couldn't believe where I went on this QUITO TOUR ???????? Ecuador

My Quito Hotel organized a walking tour of Quito in all the unexpected places.

Casa Gangotena is in a former mansion on famous San Francisco Plaza in the heart of the historic district. It may be luxury but they also connect you to the non-touristy side of Quito Ecuador!

Thanks so much to Casa Gangotena for inviting me to explore their hotel and also share an incredible experience with Metropolitan Touring who partnered with Caminos San Roque, taking us to their neighbouring San Roque market and businesses on a walking tour of Quito.

We would have never known where to find Chica de Jora, the local businesses and an incredible chocolate experience.

Quito is such an amazing city with so much to offer. This is a boutique hotel but they are really integrated into the community.

More information on the hotel:

And they can arrange custom tours with Metropolitan Touring:

And Caminos San Roque doesn't have an active Facebook page or website but it's a community project aimed at supporting local business. It was AWESOME! If you just want to do the tour try contacting Casa Gangotena or Metropolitan Touring who support these local programs.

Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.

In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.

When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.

I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

Loja Ecuador Food: 10 Awesome Things to Eat!

Loja Ecuador has some of the best food in the country - La Comida Lojana. There are some dishes like chaunfaina, cecina and the Lojano Tamal that you'll want to travel for.

Loja is the last city in Ecuador before the Peruvian border. This is considered the cultural capital of Ecuador. It's famous for its musicians and artists and it was also the first Green City in Ecuador with a very aggressive recycling program.

It's a beautiful city, colonial style similar to Cuenca but it's smaller. And also I'm here to check out the Comida Lojana. So Loja has some specific dishes here that are really good. Number one, I'm here for the coffee.

The tamal Lojano is a bit different here. So traditional Ecuador food uses a tamal made with maiz sabroso which is a corn starch based flour. But the tamal Lojano uses a different dough so it's actually just ground corn. So similar to humitas but in that case it's actually the sweet corn called choclo.

At the Tamal Lojano they have three different kinds of tamales. You can get chicken, pork, or also quesillo, which is a fresh cheese.

Mercato Central Commercial in Loja and there were so many things that I want to eat here. I came to this one spot Comedor 413 because it had so many people here. I came for chaunfaina and then also a bit of the cecina.

Chaunfaina is rice that's cooked with a sofrito, but the most important thing is they actually use offal. All of the innards of the pig that would normally be thrown out. And this is a side dish that you'll get, I got it with cecina.

Ecuadorian horchata is a drink that's made with different herbs, often some kind of pink flower petal to give it its color. You can drink it in the market even though you can't drink water here because it is boiled. So I do feel comfortable drinking that. It almost tastes like a pink lemonade here.

I came to Loja to eat two different soups both called repe, which means unripe banana. So in Loja they have the smallish banana that you can eat ripe. And that's how the rest of the country eats it. Or in Loja they also eat it unripe. Which is very unusual for other Ecuadorians because the unripe banana they might feed their livestock.

So these two different soups are interesting because the repe con arveja con guineo is like a kind of like a split pea soup and then it also has cubes of this unripe banana that is uncooked. So this is raw unripe banana in this repe.

Another Ecuadorian soup: repe blanco, boiled green banana, pound it into a mash, mixed with potato and quesillo.

There's an Ecuadoran custom that if you go to Loja, you must stop off for some sweets or dulces in the market. Traditional sweets from Loja are rustic, they're made with sugar cane, molasses, simple ingredients.

Some traditional options are bocadillo, so it's a square of molasses made with peanuts. It's the signature sweet of Loja. You can also get peanuts covered with sugar, fig in syrup. You can also get roscon.

I think the best thing to do actually is just to get the mixed bag because then you're bound like one of them.

When traveling in Loja if you can't get everywhere in the province head to Somos Loja off the main square, which is a cooperative artisanal shop that also has an incredible coffee shop in Ecuador selling 19 types of coffee from Loja. And you can try 10 of the coffees from Loja for $1/cup.

Emporio Lojana is such a great spot with coffee, food, artisanal beer, but also the coolest thing is the signature drink trino, which means something that will make you sing. It means tweet.

Cuenca Ecuador | Considered One of the Best Places to Retire! | 80+ Countries w/3 kids

Join us for a tour of Cuenca Ecuador!!!

If you want to find cultural richness in Ecuador, there is no better place to visit than Cuenca. UNESCO designated the city Cultural Patrimony of Humanity on December 1, 1999, and later in July 2001, Cuenca received the title of the Cultural Capital of the Americas for the year 2002.

Parque Calderón is Cuenca’s central plaza and the spot around which city life revolves. The impressive New Cathedral, with its massive blue domes, dominates the square. On the opposite side, stands the proud Old Cathedral which dates back to 1557 when the city was founded.

Another interesting thing to check out here is Panama Hat Factory. Would you ever guess that Panama hats are not made in Panama? Well, it’ true, they are made here, in Ecuador! The factory on Avenida Gil Ramírez Dávalos, near the bus station, crafts some of Ecuador’s finest hats.

Enjoy the video and let us know which country you're watching from!
