Visit L’Aquila: Abruzzo - Italy: Top 10 Things to Do - What, How and Why to enjoy the City

If you are planning to visit the city of L’Aquila, in Abruzzo - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the town, following a tour between the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover L’Aquila!

In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Basilica of Collemaggio, The Spanish Fort, Piazza Duomo, The Basilica of San Bernardino, The Fontana delle 99 Cannelle and Fontana Luminosa, Villa Comunale and Palazzo dell’Emiciclo, L'Aquila's porticoes, the green spaces and attractions around L’Aquila. Without forgetting food tips!
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a two-day tour to better visit the city, with tips for nearby attractions.
- Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit L’Aquila city, with its rich history.

L’Aquila is the capital Abruzzo region, in Italy, 100 km from Rome, and dates back to the twelfth century.
L’Aquila is the city where I grew up and I always loved the beauty of its historical center, full of monumental churches, fascinating squares, extended porticoes, all surrounded by mountains!
This city can offer a unique journey through history, traditions, and nature.
So, what are ten possible attractions that I would show to a foreign friend who comes to visit me?

WHAT
1/10: I would start from the Basilica of Collemaggio, the symbol of the city of L'Aquila, and one of the most visited tourist destinations of Abruzzo. Built in 1288, according to the legends here Pope Celestino V was crowned in 1294. On the left side of the church there is the Holy Door: for believers, crossing this door gives the remission of sins.
2/10: The Spanish Fort was built on the highest point of the city in 1534. The Fort has four massive bastions at the corners, and at the entrance, characterized by the precious stone portal, where you can see the double-headed eagle belonged to Charles V.
3/10: Piazza Duomo is the historic meeting place for the people of L'Aquila. Here you can visit the Cathedral of Saints Massimo and Giorgio, the Church of the Holy Souls, and the pair of old fountains of 1300. In Piazza Duomo there are bars, ice cream parlors, and the tourist information office.
4/10: The Basilica of San Bernardino is located in a panoramic position on the top of the steps of via Forte Braccio. The Basilica is characterized by the high Renaissance facade, built by Cola dell'Amatrice in 1525, and inside you can appreciate the majestic wooden ceiling decorated with gold.
5/10: The Fontana delle 99 Cannelle was built in 1274 in the lower area of the city, near the Aterno river. The plant of the fountain is trapezoidal in shape, an architecture of great impact. The name derives from the number of jets of water that start from stone masks, all different from each other. Try counting them up to 99, which is a symbolic and mysterious number in L'Aquila culture.
6/10: Fontana Luminosa stands at the beginning of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the ideal gateway to the city center, with the Gran Sasso as a background. The two bronze female bodies support the typical Abruzzo basin from which the jets of water flows. Its name is due to the play of light and colors during the night.
7/10: Behind the Villa Comunale there is the complex of Palazzo dell'Emiciclo, built in 1888, now the seat of the Abruzzo Regional Council. It has a rich Ionic portico in a semicircular shape and hosts concerts and events.
8/10: Crossing L'Aquila's porticoes: L'Aquila's porticoes are an authentic piece of the city's past. They cross Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street of the historic center, full of admirable buildings, and reach Piazza Duomo.
9/10: Walking in the green: L'Aquila is a center of art and culture, but look around and behind art and culture: you’ll notice Gran Sasso and so many other mountains. The Castle’s park is an example of a place where you can take a relaxing walk, have an aperitif or stop and read a book. Another green and scenic area just outside the walls is Parco del Sole, close to Collemaggio Basilica.
10/10: Attractions around: if you visit L’Aquila do not miss the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views visiting Gran Sasso, the highest mountain massif of central Italy and the set of several western films by Sergio Leone. And visit also the panoramic castle of Rocca Calascio, the set of the film The name of the rose, with the actor Sean Connery.

FOOD TIPS
And about food and accommodation, read the video’s description to get some tips, and taste the “Arrosticini”, skewers made with the meat of castrated sheep, and the classic “maccheroni alla chitarra”.
Food tip: Locanda da Mario, Piazza S. Biagio, 4, L'Aquila; 340 559 0545

Italy's best kept secret, Abruzzo

I wanted to show you a special place in my heart in Italy, that not many tourists from North America let alone anywhere really venture off to, the region of Abruzzo. The region of Abruzzo is truly undiscovered and I hope this video sheds some light on it as it really deserves to get far more recognition as a place to visit in Italy.

This film will show you the many incredible things about the region of Abruzzo, from the incredible local delicacies like Arrosticini, a staple of the region, to trying some good albeit very strange food on a Trabboci on the coast of the Adriatic and tasting some of the local Montepulciano wines.

Called the green lung of Italy, most of Abruzzo is covered in National Parks and they are some of the most incredible you will ever see! Besides exploring the many national parks at your disposal, another one of my favourite things to do in Abruzzo is explore the many mediavel villages, with such untouched beauty that you feel as though you've stepped back in time.

I hope that you enjoy this video and make sure to LIKE the video, it really does make a huge difference and SUBSCRIBE!

Best Places in Abruzzo

The Abruzzo region in the east of Italy offers enchanting landscapes and plenty of variety. Between the Mediterranean Sea, hilly landscapes, mountains and lakes you will find many beautiful seaside resorts with dreamlike beaches - and wine-growing areas just behind the Adriatic coast. In addition, in Abruzzo you can expect numerous historic towns with enchanting charm, archaeological sites, sanctuaries, churches and castles. And of course the excellent Italian cuisine.
The highlight of this Italian region is its spectacular landscapes and the greatest density of nature reserves in all of Italy. Behind the Abruzzo Adriatic coast, which is about 130 kilometers long, is a strip of hilly land about 20 kilometers wide. The interior is characterized by lakes, plateaus and mountains of the Apennines. Here you will also find the mountain massif Gran Sasso d'Italia, which reaches an altitude of almost 3000 meters. #abruzzo #italy #bestplaces

L'Aquila, a town that's so close to the sky and surrounded by mountains

L'Aquila, a town that's so close to the sky and surrounded by mountains. L'Aquila is a fun Italian town. Totally underrated, it is located in the central Italian Apennine mountains, in the Abruzzo region, but very close the Lazio region, where Rome, the capital, is. You must visit this town while in Italy, but especially if you are staying in Rome. There are many fun activities in the area. You may want to know:

What is L'Aquila like?
What is the nightlife in L'Aquila like?
Where to go for skiing near Rome?
Where is Arrosticini from?
What is the Abruzzo region in Italy like?
Where to go hiking near Rome?

Things to do in L'Aquila, and L'Aquila travel guide are all covered here. The Spanish fort, restaurants in town, San Bernardino church, piazza duomo, Fontana delle 99 Cannelle, and more. Plus, a visit to Campo Felice and the possibility of seeing snow and other winter related activities, like snowboarding. All such queries and questions are answered in the video.

You must know that only 13 years ago, in 2009, L’Aquila was devastated by an earthquake, a relatively recent event and one of many shortcomings in these parts of Italy. Although signs of destruction are still visible, the people and the city itself seem very committed to pushing forward and making L’Aquila as vibrant as ever. Being a University town, there is also an interesting nightlife.

If you plan on moving or visiting Italy, you should watch this video. Living in Italy as a foreigner is a journey. Moving to Italy was a whole new experience for me. The many hidden gems and secrets, besides the food and the fabulous weather make Italy and its famous cities like Florence, Venice, Milan, Turin, Naples, Palermo, Catania, Bari, Lecce, Matera, Cagliari, Rimini, Siena, Bolgheri, Pisa, Parma, Salerno, Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Scalea, Tropea, Otranto and others, as well as the Rome surrounding towns, to be as attractive as ever. I am a Kenyan and an African living in Italy, which has its pros and cons, or advantages and disadvantages.

Topics covered here are related to travel in Italy, regions of Italy and major towns in Italy as well as small lesser known but charming Italian towns. You will find information about the main sites to see and visit, accommodation, breakfast options, local foods and dishes like arrosticini di pecora, agnelo all’aquilana, stoccafisso all'abruzzese and more.
Watch this video to know what to look for in terms of a better experience and what mistakes to avoid. This helpful for travelers coming from any other non-EU countries, like Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Egypt, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cameroon, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Malawi, Angola, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Iran, Iraq, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Syria, Romania, China, Laos, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama, Haiti, Belize, Barbados, France, Spain, UK and the USA.
