After spending a couple of weeks in Kazakhstan, I headed south to Uzbekistan which is historically known as the land of traders and craftsmen.
Overland travel in Central Asia has always been something I’ve been intrigued by, despite the fact that border crossings in this region tend to be unpredictable.
After studying the border crossing map in Central Asia, I decided to enter Uzbekistan via a popular border crossing which connects Shymkent and Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan.

Having started my journey across Central Asia by spending a week in the former capital city of Kazakhstan, Almaty, I booked a flight and travelled to Kyzylorda, a provincial town in central Kazakhstan.
My plan was to travel Northwest to the Aral sea, famously known as the sea that disappeared. However I unfortunately ended up getting sick for a few days, so I changed my plans last minute and booked a train ticket back East towards Shymkent and the Uzbek border.
Trains are my favourite mode of transport, giving me the opportunity to have personal interaction with locals. Join me as I take an 8-hour train journey alone across the arid Kazakh landscape.

Turan lowland - Outskirts of the Kyzylkum Desert - Syrdarya river - Kazakhstan - 4K Scenic video
The Turan lowland is located on the territory of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The length of the plain is about two thousand kilometers. The Turgai hollow connects the Turan lowland with the West Siberian lowland. Within Kazakhstan, the Syr Darya divides the Turan lowland into two parts: northern and southern. Ustyurt and other plateaus with isolated mountains alternate with relative lowlands; individual depressions are located below sea level (for example, Karagiye, −132 m). Most of the lowland is occupied by the deserts of the Karakum, Kyzylkum, Moiynkum and others; the heights in this place are up to 922 m.
The climate of the plain is sharply continental, desert. In the southern part - subtropical. Wormwood-saltwort, psammophyte and ephemeral desert vegetation predominates. Soil types: gray-brown, low-carbonate, carbonate; light and ordinary gray soils.
The northern half is characterized by clayey, sandy, stony deserts, salt marshes and takyrs in some places; in the southern half - loess-clay, sandy, rocky, takyrs, areas of saline deserts.
Agriculture under artificial irrigation is developed; the lowlands are also used for pastures. Oil and gas fields were found (Mangyshlak oil and gas region).
The Turan Plain was formed on the plate of the Epipaleozoic platform. Its basement is dominated by Hercynian structures, among them there are pre-Baikal and Baikal massifs. Between the western part of the Kazakh uplands and the structures of the Northern Tien Shan there are buried Caledonian rocks. The Turan plate is divided into two - the North Turan and South Turan, which belong to different folded belts: the Ural-Tien Shan and the Mediterranean. The outcrops of the rocks of the basement of the slab to the surface are very limited in area.
In the Pliocene and Pleistocene, the territory of the modern Turan lowland was the bottom of the vast Turan Sea, which in some periods connected with the West Siberian, Black and Severodvinsk seas. The division of the Turan Sea into the modern Caspian and Aral Seas occurred about 2-3 thousand years ago.

В северной половине характерны глинистые, песчаные, каменистые пустыни, местами солончаки и такыры; в южной половине — лёссово-глинистые, песчаные, каменистые, такыры, участки солончаковых пустынь.
Развито земледелие при искусственном орошении; также низменность используется под пастбища. Найдены месторождения нефти и газа (Мангышлакский нефтегазоносный район).
Туранская равнина сформировалась на плите эпипалеозойской платформы. В её фундаменте преобладают герцинские структуры, среди них имеются добайкальские и байкальские массивы. Между западной частью Казахского мелкосопочника и структурами Северного Тянь-Шаня находятся погребённые каледонские породы. Туранская плита делится на две — Северо-Туранскую и Южно-Туранскую, которые относят к разным складчатым поясам: Урало-Тянь-Шаньскому и Средиземноморскому. Выходы пород фундамента плиты на поверхность очень ограничены по территории.
В плиоцене и плейстоцене территория современной Туранской низменности была дном огромного Туранского моря, которое в отдельные периоды соединялось с Западно-Сибирским, Чёрным и Северодвинским морями. Разделение Туранского моря на современные Каспийское и Аральское моря произошло примерно 2—3 тысячи лет назад.
