The Republic of Tuva is considered to be the most dangerous region in Russia. I took a trip there to check if it’s true. That was definitely an experience to remember: local shamans told me my fortune, a drunk guy tried to attack me, Tuvan farmers fed me and showed me their cute animals. Как им удается сохранять традиции в этом переменчивом мире, для чего они кочуют и как это происходит? Чтобы ответить на эти вопросы мы отправились в республику Тыва.
По разнообразию природы Тыва, пожалуй, не знает себе равных. Здесь, на небольшой территории, можно увидеть практически все типы земных ландшафтов. Пустыни и степи, таежные леса и тундры – во всех этих зонах можно побывать проехав всего сто километров. Такие уникальные природные условия связаны с местоположением и рельефом Тывы. Республика находится в самом центре Азии. Со всех сторон ее защищают горы, только с юга она открыта степям и пустыням Монголии. Две горных системы, вытянутых в широтном направлении, пересекают Тыву – на севере Западный Саян, на юге – Танну-ола. Между ними находится тувинская котловина, родина большинства кочевников Тывы.

Visit Kyrgyzstan - Issyk-Kul Lake Travel Guide (south shore) video transcript:
For the next leg of our travels in Kyrgyzstan (
Кыргызстан), we made our way to the Bel Tam Yurt Camp on the south shores of Issyk Kul Lake (Ысык-Көл). We used this as our base for 3 days and from there, we took a few different side trips to some of the most popular sights and attractions in the area. Here’s a taste of what we got up to:
For this half-day trek, we drove from Bokonbayevo (Бөкөнбаев) to the Boz Salkyn Jailoo. Once we arrived at the yurt camp, we met our horses and set off on an incredibly scenic ride.
The second stretch of the trek involved riding uphill through the forest, but once we broke through the tree line, we were treated to amazing views of the surrounding area. The horses got a little break to munch on wildflowers, and we sat down to enjoy a picnic.
We had been hearing a lot about Skazka from fellow travellers staying at our yurt camp, so we were really looking forward to visiting.
The canyon’s name is very fitting as the landscapes really do look straight out of a fairy tale. There are parts where the hills look like they’ve been painted in shades of terracotta, rust, and ochre, and then you also have natural rock formations that rise from the ground. It’s a really nice place for a light hike and a bit of photo taking.
While the water of the sacred springs may be the main draw for pilgrims, for us, this attraction was more about the scenery. Narrow trails wind up, down, and around the hills and it makes for a fun hike through some pretty surreal landscapes. Just don’t forget to bring some water, because the sun can be really strong.
The yurt-building workshop was located in Kyzyl-Tuu Village.
Here we met Tolosun and his family, who all work together to bring the yurts to life. Everything you need for the yurts, from the wooden poles that make up the ceiling to the felt that provides insulation, is made here by different members of his family.
We also learned that this family holds the record for fastest yurt-building time clocking in under 10 minutes. They did it a bit slower for us so that we could understand and help out with the process, but needless to say, they’re pros at this.
Back in town, we made our way to Federation Salburuun, which is a group focused on keeping alive the tradition of eagle hunting that’s been passed down to nomads for centuries.
Eagle hunting happens during the winter months, but during the summer months you can attend demonstrations to learn about this tradition and watch eagles training with furs and hides.
Aside from eagle hunting, the group also practices archery and horseback archery.
We can’t talk about our visit to Issyk Kul’s (Иссык-Куль) South Shore without also mentioning the Bel Tam Yurt Camp.
Not only was staying in a yurt pretty cool, but we loved the friendly staff and the camaraderie amongst travellers at the camp. They had a massive dining tent where everyone gathered for communal dinners.
The highlight was getting to know other travellers and swapping tips and stories about Kyrgyzstan.

This is a trip to Siberia and Tuva. We left the city of Krasnoyarsk, drove to the city of Abakan, then to the city of Kyzyl, further through the Sayan mountain range we reached the village of Toora Khem. From where they sailed 150 km in boats along the Great Yenisei and Khamsara.

The Tuvan republic lies at the geographical center of Asia, in southern Siberia. The republic borders the Altai Republic, the Republic of Khakassia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Irkutsk Oblast, and the Republic of Buryatia in Russia and Mongolia to the south. The region is also claimed by the Taiwanese major political party Kuomintang as part of the Republic of China. In the 2010 Russian census, the territory claimed a population of 307,930. Its capital is the city of Kyzyl.
From 1921 to 1944, Tuva constituted a sovereign, independent, but partially recognized nation, acknowledged only by its neighbors the Soviet Union and Mongolia. It was known officially as Tannu Tuva until 1926 and thereafter as the Tuvan People's Republic. A majority of the population are ethnic Tuvans who speak Tuvan as their native tongue, while Russian is spoken natively by the Russian minority; both are official and widely understood in the republic. Tuva is governed by the Great Khural, which elects a chairman to four-year terms.
From 1758 to 1911, it was part of China's Qing dynasty and administered by Outer Mongolia.[During the Xinhai Revolution in China, Tsarist Russia formed a separatist movement among the Tuvans while there were also pro-independence and pro-Mongol groups. Tsar Nicholas II agreed to the third petition by Tuva's leadership in 1912, establishing a protectorate over the then independent state. Some Russians, such as merchants, travelers, and explorers were already settled in Tuva at that time. Tuva became nominally independent as the Uryankhay Republic before being brought under the Russian protectorate as Uryankhay Krai under Tsar Nicholas II, on 17 April 1914.
Tuvan capital was established, called Belotsarsk (Белоца́рск; literally, (Town) of the White Tsar. Meanwhile, in 1911 Mongolia became independent, though under Russian protection. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917 that ended the imperial autocracy, most of Tuva was occupied from 5 July 1918 to 15 July 1919 by Aleksandr Kolchak's White Russian troops. Pyotr Ivanovich Turchaninov was named the governor of the territory. In the autumn of 1918, the southwestern part was occupied by Chinese troops and the southern part by Mongol troops led by Khatanbaatar Magsarjav.
From July 1919 to February 1920, the communist Red Army controlled Tuva but from 19 February 1920 to June 1921 it was occupied by China (the governor was Yan Shichao [traditional, Wade–Giles transliteration: Yan Shi-ch'ao]. On 14 August 1921, the Bolsheviks established the Tuvan People's Republic, popularly called Tannu-Tuva. In 1926, the capital (Belotsarsk; Khem-Beldyr since 1918) was renamed Kyzyl, meaning red. The Tuvan People's Republic was de jure an independent state between the World Wars. The state's ruler, Chairman Donduk Kuular, sought to strengthen ties with Mongolia and establish Buddhism as the state religion. This unsettled the Soviet Union, which orchestrated a coup carried out in 1929 by five young Tuvan graduates of Moscow's Communist University of the Toilers of the East.
In 1930, the pro-Soviet regime discarded the state's Mongol script in favor of a Latin alphabet designed for Tuva by Russian linguists. In 1943 Cyrillic script replaced Latin. Under the leadership of Party Secretary Salchak Toka, ethnic Russians were granted full citizenship rights and Buddhist and Mongol influences on the Tuvan state and society were systematically reduced.
Tuva was attached by the Soviet Union in 1944, with the approval of Tuva's Little Khural (parliament) but without a referendum on the issue. It became the Tuvan Autonomous Oblast within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic after the Soviet victory in World War II. Salcha Toka, the leader of the Tuvan People's Revolutionary Party, was given the title of First Secretary of the Tuvan Communist Party and became the de facto ruler of Tuva until he died in 1973. It became the Tuvan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, on 10 October 1961.
