Field Trip by SGI Delegation to Semey City and the former Nuclear Test site of Semipalatinsk
2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the end of nuclear weapons testing in Semipalatinsk, the primary testing venue for the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons, the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia, and the ratification by Kazakhstan as the 26th country to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This year also marks the first showing of the Russian-language version of the exhibition ‘Everything You Treasure – For a World Free from Nuclear Weapons’, from October 2-13 in Nur-Sultan city, the capital of Kazakhstan.
On Oct 1 at the Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbassy, Soka Gakkai International (SGI) held the opening ceremony of the exhibition together with ICAN and Elbassy and its delegation from Japan led by Mr. Hirotsugu Terasaki visited Semey, Kurchatov and the former Nuclear Test Site of Semipalatinsk (Polygon) between Oct 3-4, 2019. This is a video documentary film made by Katsuiro Asagiri, multimedia Director of IDN/INPS who accompanied the SGI delegation to East Kazakhstan.

This year when the UN officially commemorates the Tenth Anniversary of the Day, August 29, Kazakhstan’s First President Nursultan Nazarbayev presented to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo and the relatives of late International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano, who passed away on July 18, 2019, the Nazarbayev Prize for a Nuclear-Free-World and Global Security in Nur-Sultan.
Prior to the award ceremony, IDN-INPS Multimedia Director Katsuhiro Asagiri joined journalists from UN, Japan, Latvia, Italy, Portugal, Israel, Mexico, and U.S.A. a two-day press trip to Semey city and Kurchatova town in East Kazakhstan Region, once the center of operations for the adjoining Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site.

????One of the beautiful✨ and big cities that I've visited is Almaty.
⠀
✅Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, and is still its largest city. Being a financial ????and cultural ✨center of Central Asia, Almaty boasts moderately-sized ????????♂️tourist and expatriate communities.
✅On a clear day you can see the beautifully rugged, snow capped ????mountains, right at the city's doorstep to the south. The city, in general, slopes from south to north which makes navigating the streets easy. If you are traveling uphill, you're going south. There is also a small mountain ????range bordering the city to the east.
✅The city certainly has a spectacular ????beauty, whether or not it was the Garden of Eden, and is located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau in the extreme southeast of Kazakhstan. The backdrop of mountains ????against the taller buildings makes a dramatic and impressive sight and was the center for the Asian Winter games in January 2011.
✅It is a wonderful gateway to this undiscovered and distinctive ⚜️country. Kazakh ????people are very kind and welcoming, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the ????hospitality.

Episode 37 - The Nuclear Explosion and Meltdown at Chernobyl
In 1986, Russia was still communist and Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union. The town of Chernobyl in northern Ukraine was home to a major nuclear power plant that produced 10% of Ukraine’s electrical needs. During a late night safety test, inherent reactor design flaws along with operator error resulted in an uncontrolled reaction that resulted in a steam explosion and eventually a graphite fire. For the next 9 days, plumes of fissionable material were lofted into the air eventually dropping back down on the USSR and Europe.
