Jago 264| The First Backpackers in Kunduz, Afghanistan: Navigating My Way into Afghanistan

On the 135th day, Duke and I crossed the Panj River again to Afghan immigration and this time after two hours the officer finally gave us the visa application form. Not long after that, Mark appeared and told us how relaxed he was camping in Tajikistan compared to us sleeping on tables and chairs last night.

An hour later Andrew appeared and was surprised to see me still at immigration because yesterday he received my message that I would be crossing that day.

Apart from filling out the English form, a guide also helped us fill out the Farsi (or maybe Pashto) form. All names were transliterated.

Then we were allowed to enter Shir Khan Bandar village to pay the visa fee (6700 Afghani/$90) and used the opportunity to also exchange Somoni for Afghani.

Two hours later (after lunch break), our visas were issued. With that we were able to get through the immigration and got a reversed Afghan stamp. Finally I officially entered Afghanistan.

At the Shir Khan Bandar market there was a shared taxi (200 Afghani) to Kunduz, a one-hour journey across the desert. On the way, I saw many bajaj which were similar to those in Indonesia.

We were dropped off in downtown Kunduz and caused a crowd. It seemed like it had been a long time since a foreigner had stopped by this town. Moreover, this time there were four foreign backpackers at once from different countries of origin. Everyone questioned the purpose of our arrival.

To escape the crowd, we quickly entered the Five Star Hotel, where I could see the view of Kunduz from above. The hotel owner provided us with a VIP room at a discounted price, a gesture to welcome foreign guests back to his hotel.

In the evening we went out looking for local snacks. When we were having our dinner, the Taliban intel found us and conducted interviews and even sent us to the MFA office to validate our visas even though it was late at night. Sure enough, the office was closed. Tomorrow morning we had to go back there to validate our visas and continue our journey in Afghanistan.

You CAN'T Pay At This Street Vendor - My Last Day In Afghanistan, Kunduz ????????

Although I approached this journey with considerable hesitancy and carried a weight of worries and risks upon arriving in Afghanistan, it quickly became evident that the country's people made my experience significantly smoother from day one.

Having traveled extensively throughout South Asian countries, I was no stranger to the renowned hospitality in the region. However, my arrival in Afghanistan was particularly remarkable given the nation's prolonged history of conflict and the near absence of tourism.

Much like my experiences in Iran, I found that I blended in seamlessly with the local population in Afghanistan, both in terms of appearance and attire, initially avoiding the foreigner treatment. This remained the case until I took up my camera and spoke English. Those who have watched my YouTube videos from Afghanistan are already familiar with the warmth and generosity of the people, who often insisted on covering the cost of meals and extended invitations to their homes for lunch or dinner.

No matter where you travel in the World, you understand that there are always beautiful souls adorned with the most heartwarming smiles and an innate sense of hospitality, even if they have endured the harshest circumstances for years. It dawns on you that a simple snack can bring a smile to any child's face. You recognize that all humans, regardless of their background, share common aspirations: food, family, security, happiness, and a connection to something greater, whether a divine presence or a higher purpose.

I extend my heartfelt love and appreciation to every individual I encountered during my time in Afghanistan, including the shop owners, drivers, my guide, and the countless ordinary people who crossed my path throughout my journey. ❤️

Please note: This is not intended as a travel advisory. Afghanistan currently has a government that remains unrecognized by any nation, resulting in the absence of embassies and international diplomatic relations. I am an experienced traveler who explored the country in the company of a reputable guide.
