The term 'Kulgam' signifies the combination of the words 'Kul', meaning 'Whole', and 'Gam', which translates to 'teach righteousness' in Arabic.
Hazrat Amir Kabir Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (RA) and the mystical poetess Lal Ded were invited to Kulgam by Mir Syed Hussain Simnania (RA). In Kulgam, their disciples, such as Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani (RA), played a significant role in promoting and encouraging the composite culture, even when dissension in other Asiatic countries was considered heretical. Kulgam is regarded as a place that serves as a torch-bearer for righteousness.
The creation of district Kulgam, along with seven other newly established districts in the state, was driven by administrative convenience and the goal of bringing administration closer to the people for their development and betterment. It was carved out from District Anantnag and became administratively functional on 2nd April, 2007.
The town of Kulgam, which serves as the district headquarters, is located approximately 68 kilometers away from Srinagar and 17 kilometres away from Anantnag. Geographically, the district is situated between 330 –15’ North Latitude and 740-35’ East Longitude. It is bordered by Anantnag and Shopian districts to the east and north respectively. To the south and southwest, it is bounded by Reasi, Ramban, and Rajouri districts, separated by the imposing Pirpanjal mountain range, which acts as a formidable topographic barrier. The district is well-connected to neighboring districts such as Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag, and Ramban through a reliable road network. Nallah Veshav, originating from the northern face of Pir Panjal, is the main left bank tributary of the river Jehlum and flows through District Kulgam. Before merging with the Jehlum, the Veshu splits into several channels, providing drinking water to a large population in the district and irrigation facilities to extensive agricultural lands.
In addition to the aforementioned places of spiritual significance, such as Mir Syed Hussain Simnania (RA) in Kulgam and Sheikhul Alam (RA) in Gofbal Bogund Qaimoh, the district also boasts several tourist attractions. One such attraction is the Aherbal Water Fall located on Veshu Nallah, which offers breathtaking views in the extreme South-West of Kulgam. Other notable tourist spots include Kung-Watan and Gurwatan beyond Aherbal, as well as Charebal and Nandimarg highland pastures. The district is also home to pristine meadows stretching from 'Kund' to 'Ladigasan' (beyond Aherbal Clefts). Moreover, the district is blessed with an abundance of natural and fresh water resources, including famous springs like Kounsarnag (beyond Aherbal), Waseknag (Kund), and Khee Nag (Khee Jogipora).

Often referred to as the Niagara falls of Kashmir, Aharbal falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. Located in Kulgam district, the boisterous waters of Vishav river tumble down straight 25 metres creating a waterfall. The height may not be much, but the sheer volume of water crashing down on the rocks is enough to make it's roar audible from a distance.
I returned to these falls during Autumn (November 2021) after a terrifying visit in January during peak winter in the same year. This time a local Gujjar cha cha took me around & showed me many hidden spots. In winter part of the waterfall is frozen & accessibility is quiet difficult due to heavy snow. However in the summer months this place is very popular for local tourist.
Srinagar lies at a distance of appox. 70 kms away. The trip can be done on a day's visit from Srinagar.

????️ Where is Aharbal Waterfall Located?
Aharbal Waterfall is located in the Aharbal Village which is approximately 68 km from Srinagar. Aharbal Village is situated at a height of 7434 m and is a part of the Kulgam district.
Aharbal is a hill station in the southwestern part of Kashmir Valley. Interestingly, Aharbal Waterfall is called the Niagara Waterfall of Kashmir due to its large water flow.
Aharbal Waterfall is formed when the Veshaw River, a tributary of River Jhelum, falls 25 meters down a narrow rocky gorge of granite boulders.
???? How to Reach
- Bus - There are no direct buses to Aharbal so you will need to take a bus to Shopian first and then ask for a cab to Aharbal.
- Shared Cab - There are no direct shared cabs to Aharbal as well. You can get a shared cab to Shopian and then try to get one for Aharbal or do hitchhiking.
- Rental Bike - The best and the quickest way to reach Aharbal is by renting a scooty/bike from Srinagar. It takes around 2-2.5 hours on scooty one side and the views are truly mesmerizing.

There is a government hut accommodation available near the waterfall that you can opt for. Another option is to carry a tent so that you can camp on the open ground available near the waterfall.

I personally tried The Hunger Games cafe inside Aharbal Park and it was completely worth it. The sandwich and the momos were delicious and didn't feel too expensive as well.

The entry fee to Aharbal Park is 10 INR and there is a paid parking area outside where you can park your vehicle too. There is a toilet outside the park gate where they charge 5 INR for use.
Inside the park, you will find many foods and drink vendors who would be selling everything from cold drinks to biscuits.
You can easily plan a day trip to Aharbal Waterfall from Srinagar and spend 2-3 hours exploring this village or chilling beside the river here.

Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. It is also the most easily accessible one and yet never crowded. Located at a distance of only about 70 kilometers from Srinagar, it is a place that is amazingly beautiful but does not get the attention that it truly deserves.

The waterfall is named after this village and is formed at a spot where the Veshaw River or Nallah Veshaw flows through a narrow gorge of granite boulders. The water falls about 25 meters at 3 different places before it flows down the valley.
