Kukes Albania , a Town on a Lake Surrounded by Mountains
Kukes is a stunning regional town located on an artificial lake. It was entirely built during the 1970s after the original Kukes was submerged beneath the reservoir for a hydroelectric dam. The town is also known as Kukesi i Ri (New Kukes), but mostly is referred to as Kukes. It is surrounded by lush green hills, and the snow-capped peaks of Gjallica Mountain, part of the Dinaric Alps. While there is not a huge amount to do in Kukes, there is plenty of beautiful wilderness nearby for hikers and nature lovers to explore. Hike up Gjallica Mountain or try some of the walks at the Valbona Valley National Park to see the wonderful beauty of Albania’s pristine areas. During winter you can go skiing in nearby Shishtavec, or just relax in the alpine air and bask in the villager’s warm hospitality. Kukes sits right on the Albanian/Kosovan border, so it is a handy place to stop for a night before making the journey across the mountain range. Kukes is the only town in the world to have been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize due to its intake of hundreds of thousands of Kosovan refugees during the Kosovo War in the late nineties.

My eleventh day in the beautiful Balkan country of Albania began in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Gjirokastër. Come along with me as I try Albanian food and visit UNESCO attractions in Gjirokastër, Albania!

My day began at Hotel Argjiro in Gjirokastër. My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I started with a massive breakfast on the second-floor terrace. The pispili (a spinach and corn pie casserole was fluffy, like a quiche! I also had eggs and some phenomenal bacon and a doughy byrek with goat cheese inside. The sweet fig marmalade was perfect with the crispy, hollow petulla.
Next, we headed through the bazaar, uphill toward the castle. Along the way, we checked out a Cold War bunker and saw several vendors, including a woman selling fresh figs, blackberries, and mountain tea!
Then, we arrived at the castle. Inside is a map of the castle. There are Italian and German cannons from WWII along the corridor and an Italian Fiat L6/40 tank!
Further along is a garden terrace where you can see stunning views of Gjirokastër.
There’s also a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star U.S. Air Force plane.
Then, we headed to the clock tower. On the way is a big square and stage where a traditional festival is held. At the end of the castle is the 18th-century clock tower and a plaque telling the story of Princess Argjiro, who jumped from the top of the castle with her baby so they wouldn’t be captured by Ottoman invaders in the 15th century.
In the bazaar, we stopped at a handicraft shop where a man makes beautiful stone carvings with a hammer and chisel. I bought two: one of the eagle on the Albanian flag for my office and a square one for my assistant for 20 Euros/$23.45 USD.
Next, we visited a woodcarving shop, which is another specialty in Gjirokastër. I bought two name plates for my daughters. They’re beautiful gifts! I also bought the double Albanian eagle for 3,000 lekes total, or about $30 USD.
Further on is Edua, another shop, where they sell artisanal goods including mountain tea, oil, liquors, and more! I tried some strong rakija and bought some honey and artisanal soap for 1,000 lekes/roughly $10 USD.
Next, we visited a traditional building that was being renovated and then walked to Bar Restorant Hotel Kodra. In the kitchen, they prepared a Gjirokastër chicken tava dish with green peppers, tomatoes, goat cheese, herbs, cream, and onions.
On the terrace, Erjan and I toasted with some smoky rakija and then started on the tava! We also had a huge salad with parmesan cheese, mushrooms, cucumbers, spinach, balsamic vinegar, oil, and raisins. The salad was crunchy and fresh and perfect for a hot day!
The tava was super creamy and full of yummy herbs. It was my first chicken tava in Albania. The herbs brought out so much flavor! It was even better with some crunchy focaccia bread.
We ended with a creamy dessert called oshaf, which is made with sheep milk and fig juice. It’s super thick and creamy and reminded me of panna cotta. I loved the cinnamon in it!
Our final stop was an 18th century home to see how life used to be in Gjirokastër. It’s called Skenduli House. There’s a courtyard and a first level where the family would cook for themselves and their animal. The second level was their winter room and the top room was for the summer. It’s a beautiful, amazing house. What a stunning piece of history that’s still alive today!

Kukës is a city in the Republic of Albania. The city is the capital of the surrounding municipality of Kukës and county of Kukës, one of 12 constituent counties of the republic. It spans 8.2 square kilometres (3.2 sq mi) and had a total population of 16,719 people as of 2011. By air distance, Kukës is located 98 kilometres (61 mi) northeast of Tirana, 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the east of Shkodër and 34 kilometres (21 mi) to the south of Gjakovë and 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the west of Prizren in Kosovo.
Geologically, the terrain of the surrounding area is dominated by mountainous and high terrain. The city sprawls across the Luma Plain within the Albanian Alps between the banks of Lake Fierza and the hills of the northernmost Korab Mountains and westernmost Shar Mountains. At the confluence of the Black and White Drin, the Drin River originates close to the city's territory.
Kukës traces its history back over a thousand years. The region that nowadays corresponds to the city territory was inhabited by several ancient Illyrian tribes, as most of Albania. Numerous tombs from the Illyrians has been identified at Këneta and Kolsh nearby the city. The residential estate served as a stopping point on a branch road leading to the Via Egnatia, which connected Durrës on the Adriatic Sea in the west with Constantinople on the Marmara Sea in the east. In modern times and due to the close proximity to Kosovo, the city achieved worldwide recognition during the Kosovo War as thousands of Kosovo-Albanian refugees crossed the border and found security in the city.
The city was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in regard to hospitality and for embracing thousands of refugees during the Kosovo War. It was the first time a town was nominated for the prize. In 2017, the city applied for the 2018 European Green Capital Award to become Europe's Green Capital.

Kukësi është qytet në Shqipërinë verilindore, i shtrire në koordinatat 42,09° V, 20,43° L. Është qendra e Qarkut Kukës. Shtrihet në rrëzë të Malit të Gjallicës dhe në breg të Liqenit të Fierzës, në Rrafshen e Lumës. Motoja e qytetit është “Qyteti i mikpritjes dhe bujarisë”.
Në vitin 2000 Kukësi u kandidua për Çmimin Nobel për Paqe me motivacionin e pritjes së mbi 450.000 shqiptarëve nga Kosova të dëbuar nga ushtria, paraushtarakët serbë dhe serbët e armatosur në Kosovë. Në vitin 2010, banorët e Kukësit u shpallën nga USAID, si më të lumturit e Shqipërisë.
Megjithëse zona e Kukësi është një vendbanim i hershëm historik, siç dëshmohet prej varreve ilire të zbuluara në fshatin Kënetë, Kukësi ose Kukësi i Ri është një ndër qytetet më të reja në Shqipëri.
Më 31 mars 1962 u vendos përmbytja e Kukësit të Vjetër dhe ndërtimi i Kukësit të Ri. Më 22 korrik 1962 filluan punimet për ndertimin e Kukësit të ri. Në prill të 1965 filloi popullimi i tij.
Në vitin 1978 e tërë popullsia vendoset në qytetin e ri. Në gusht 1988 varet në qendër të qytetit poeti disident Havzi Nela. Diktatura komuniste ishte tepër e ashpër në Kukës, duke shtypur çdo mendim të lirë me burgosje e përndjekje për çdo atdhetar, e duke diskriminuar me direktiva të posaçme popullatën që kishte prejardhje nga Gjakova.
Më 5 janar 1991 krijohet dega e Partisë Demokratike për Kukësin. Në 11-12 Mars 1997 banditë të armatosur sulmojnë depot e armatimit të ushtrisë në rrethinat e Kukësit dhe repartet ushtarake nëpër fshatra. Qyteti mbushet me njerëz të armatosur duke shtyrë qytetarët e Kukësit të armatosen për vetëmbrojtje.
Me 12 Mars 1997 përhapet lajmi se ushtria serbe po përparonte drejt Kukësit, që çoi në largimin e shumicës së popullsisë së qytetit, përveç një pjese të vogël që qëndruan për mbrojtjen e qytetit. Disa ditë më vonë grupe të armatosura të ardhura nga fshatrat përreth, sulmojnë bizneset në qytet; vritet një nga sulmuesit, duke sjellë dhe fundin e plaçkitjeve në qytet.
Në vitin 1999, Kukësi pret afro 450.000 shqiptarë nga Kosova të dëbuar nga ushtria dhe paraushtarakët serbë. Përjeton periudhën më të vështirë në historinë e tij duke u përballur dhe me bombardimet serbe në kodrat përreth qytetit.
Në vitin 2000 kandidohet për Çmimin Nobel për paqe duke u bërë i pari qytet në botë i kandiduar për një çmim të tillë. Në vitin 2004 përfundon ndërtimi i Aeroportit të Kukësit. Në vitin 2010 përfundon ndërtimi i rrugës Durrës-Kukës që lidh më shpejt Kukësin me Tiranën.

10. Dhermi.
With its welcoming turquoise waters and beautiful beaches that stretch into the distance, the gorgeous scenery of Dhermi is where many young Albanians head to in the summer. It is also home to some pulsating nightlife.
9. Durres.
Once the capital of Albania, Durres is located not far from Tirana on the country’s coastline. It is a very popular destination, which means that it can get a bit crowded during the summer.

Lying just a stone’s throw away from huge Lake Skadar that straddles the Montenegro-Albania border, Shkodra is a very pretty city to visit. The Buna River runs through town and the Albanian Alps can be seen off in the distance.
6. Berat.
Widely regarded as one of the prettiest cities in the whole of the Balkans, Berat is known as ‘the Town of a Thousand Windows,’ as so many windows peer out at you from the front of its hillside buildings which are so tightly clustered together.
5. Himare.
With its beautiful setting on the Albanian Riviera, Himare’s sparkling turquoise waters and spectacular hilly coastline make it a great place to head if you’re after some sun, sea, and sand.
4. Gjirokaster.
Located in the south of the country, Gjirokaster is a delight to visit. Its beautiful old town is perched on the side of a hill overlooking a valley and its winding cobbled streets are full of quaint buildings and historic sites.
3. Kruje.
Lying just to the north of Tirana, Kruje – or Kruja, as it is known in English – is famous for being the home city of Albania’s national hero Gjergj Skanderbeg.
2. Butrint National Park.
Home to a number of diverse ecosystems and stunning archaeological sites, Butrint National Park is a popular tourist destination, in large part due to its proximity to the Greek island of Corfu.
The main attraction, however, is the amazing archaeological site which covers over 2,500 years of history; this includes ancient city walls, remnants of a Roman theater, a Byzantine Basilica and two castles.

Once full of grey, unwelcoming communist buildings, Tirana has transformed considerably since the early 90s. Albania’s capital is now a fun, friendly and festive place to visit.

Staying At An Albanian Ethno Farm Near Kukes - HARROWING DRIVE!!
This is one of the more wild drives I've been on in my whole travels, from a failed border crossing, a near miss on getting stuck in the mud, trying to find our way out of Montenegro over partially collapsed bridges to the correct roads that would lead us to Albania through a thunderstorm, no street lights, rain so hard that the headlights didn't do much of anything --- to FINALLY getting to the Ethno Farm in the BEAUTIFUL mountains of Albania with some of the SWEETEST people I've met. I may have cried a little having to get back in the car and not having enough time to properly enjoy this little slice of heaven. Just glad I have this video as memories to remember it by now.

Albania is still one of those travel destinations where you can really go off the beaten path and dive into spontaneous adventures anywhere. This village, high in the mountains of Southern Albania, was the perfect destinations to explore the area.
