Berat, definite Albanian form: Berati), is the ninth largest city by population of the Republic of Albania. The city is the capital of the surrounding Berat County, one of 12 constituent counties of the country.[1] By air, it is 71 kilometres (44 miles) north of Gjirokastër, 70 kilometres (43 miles) west of Korçë, 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Tirana and 33 kilometres (21 miles) east of Fier.

Berat is located in the south of the country, 120 km south of Tirana. It is surrounded by mountains and hills including Tomorr on the east that was declared a national park. The river Osum (total length 161 km (100 mi)) runs through the city before it empties into the Seman within the Myzeqe Plain. The municipality of Berat was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Berat, Otllak, Roshnik, Sinjë and Velabisht, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the city Berat.[2] The total population is 60,031 (2011 census), in a total area of 380.21 km2 (146.80 sq mi).[4] The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 32,606.

Berat, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, comprises a unique style of architecture with influences from several civilizations that have managed to coexist for centuries throughout the history. Like many cities in Albania, Berat comprises an old fortified city filled with churches and mosques painted with grandiose wealth of visible murals and frescos. Berat is one of the main cultural centres of the country.

The name of the city in Albanian is Berat or Berati, which is probably derived from the Old Slavonic Бѣлградъ or Bel(i)grad[citation needed] (Белград, meaning white city in the South Slavic languages), under which name it was known in Greek, Bulgarian, Latin and Slavic documents during the High and Late Middle Ages.[citation needed] That name was rendered as Bellegrada (Βελλέγραδα) in Greek.[citation needed] It is believed to have been the site of the ancient city Antipatreia (Ancient Greek: Ἀντιπάτρεια city of Antipater) or Antipatrea in Latin, while during the early Byzantine Empire the name of the town was Pulcheriopolis (Greek: Πουλχεριόπολις, city of Pulcheria).[6][7] In the Republic of Venice the city was known as Belgrado di Romania (Rumelian Belgrade), while in the Ottoman Empire it was also known as Belgrad-i Arnavud (Albanian Belgrade) to distinguish it from Belgrade.

Berat lies on the right bank of the river Osum, a short distance from the point where it is joined by the Molisht river. The old city centre consists of three parts: Kalaja (on the castle hill), Mangalem (at the foot of the castle hill) and Gorica (on the left bank of the Osum). It has a wealth of beautiful buildings of high architectural and historical interest. The pine forests above the city, on the slopes of the towering Tomorr mountains, provide a backdrop of appropriate grandeur. The Osumi river has cut a 915-metre deep gorge through the limestone rock on the west side of the valley to form a precipitous natural fortress, around which the town was built on several river terraces.

According to an Albanian legend, the Tomorr mountain was originally a giant, who fought with another giant (mountain) called Shpirag over a young woman. They killed each other and the girl drowned in her tears, which then became the Osum river.

Mount Shpirag, named after the second giant, is on the left bank of the gorge, above the district of Gorica. Berat is known to Albanians as the city of One above another Windows (a similar epithet is sometimes applied to Gjirokastra), or The City of Two Thousand Steps. It was proclaimed a 'Museum City' by the dictator Enver Hoxha in June 1961.

The earliest recorded inhabitants of the city (6th century BC) were the ancient Greek tribe of the Dassaretae or Dexarioi, the northernmost subgroup of the Chaonians, and the region was known as Dessaretis after them.[7][8] Modern Berat occupies the site of Antipatreia (Ancient Greek: Ἀντιπάτρεια), which originally was a settlement of the Dexarioi[9] and later a Macedonian stronghold in southern Illyria.[7][10] The founding date is unknown, although if Cassander is the founder it has been suggested that Antipatreia was founded after he took control of the region around 314 BC.[10] In 200 BC it was captured by the Roman legatus Lucius Apustius, who razed the walls and massacred the male population of the city.

BERAT, ALBANIA | 6 INCREDIBLE Things To Do In & Around Berat

Berat is located 70 kilometers, or 43 miles, south of Tirana in the center of Albania. It’s known for its historic architecture combined with beautiful nature scenery. And it’s nicknamed the “town of a thousand windows” because of the Ottoman-era houses with large windows that overlook the town. So whether you’re a culture lover, history buff, or outdoor enthusiast, Berat offers something for everyone. This video highlights 6 amazing things to do in Berat, which are best undertaken in 2 to 3 days:

6. Explore the churches and remains of Berat Castle
Looming over the town, Berat Castle is an attraction you can’t miss! This fortress dates back to Roman Times, but the walls and towers that still stand today are mostly from the 1200s. Within its walls, you’ll find a vast citadel complex of stone streets, houses, and Byzantine churches mixed in with ruins from other time periods. Make sure to visit the subterranean water cistern and the 14th century Holy Trinity Church.

5. Take in the views from Berat Castle
Apart from the historical sights, the castle also offers the best panoramic views over Berat. Head to the lookout platforms to take in the river valley views. It’s a steep climb to reach Berat Castle from the lower town, but it’s absolutely worth it for the stunning views!

4. Explore the Mangalem and Gorica quarter
Below the castle sit two of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods in all of Berat. Mangalem and Gorica sit on either side of the Osumi River and are connected by the ancient Gorica Bridge. Both quarters are composed of narrow alleys of ancient white stone houses, timber doors, and large windows. After visiting these sections of town, you’ll understand where Berat’s nickname comes from!

☑️ Guided tour of Berat and the quarters:

3. Take a dip at the Bogove Waterfall
If you want to explore some of the natural beauty that surrounds Berat, the Bogove Waterfall is for you. It’s located 35 kilometers, or 21 miles, from town and it’s easiest to reach by car. The whole area is green and shady with deep swimming holes and cascading falls! It’s super refreshing to take a dip here during the heat of the summer, but be aware that the water is numbingly cold. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the falls.

2. Raft or hike at Osumi Canyon
Not far beyond the waterfalls, you can find the Osumi Canyon. The Osumi River passes through the town of Berat and flows through the canyon, with walls reaching over 80 meters, or 262ft, in some sections! Different seasons offer different types of activities here. During the spring you can see many waterfalls from the bottom, which can be explored by raft. While during the summer, the water is lower and there are more opportunities for river hiking and swimming in the streams.

☑️ Osumi Canyon + Bogove Waterfalls tour:

1. Go wine tasting at çobo winery
The countryside around Berat is known for its production of wine. You can admire the vineyards when driving around, but you can also do a tasting at some of them if you’d like. The çobo winery is probably the most famous wine producer in all of Albania.

A Road Trip to Durrës & Berat

We decided to see the main port city and historic Albanian capital Durrës and the UNESCO World Heritage Sight of Berat.

Donate:

ALBANIA: Castle of Kruja / Krujë - The Historical City | Balkans | Europe | Tour & Travel Video

The Krujë Castle (Albanian: Kalaja e Krujës) is a castle in the city of Krujë, Albania, and the center of Skanderbeg's rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. Inside the castle is the Teqe of Dollme of the Bektashi (an Islamic Sufi sect), the National Skanderbeg Museum, the remains of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed mosque and its minaret, an ethnographic museum, and a Turkish bath.

During the Albanian Revolt of 1432-1436, the city was unsuccessfully besieged by Andrea Thopia, and the Ottoman rule was restored. After Skanderbeg's rebellion in 1443, the castle withstood three massive sieges from the Turks respectively in 1450, 1466, and 1467 with garrisons usually no larger than 2,000-3,000 men under Skanderbeg's command. Mehmed II The Conqueror himself could not break the castle's small defenses until 1478, 10 years after the death of Skanderbeg. Today it is a center of tourism in Albania and a source of inspiration to Albanians. Krujë Castle is situated at an elevation of 557 meters (1,827 ft).
