Riga railway station / Latvian Railway / Riga Central Station / Latvian trains

Riga Central Station (Latvian: Rīgas Centrālā stacijа) is the main railway station in Riga, Latvia. Part of the building is a shopping centre.
Three rail mainlines depart the station to the east:
Riga–Skulte
Riga–Lugaži, through to the Estonian border crossing at Valka.
Riga-Krustpils, which then splits into lines to Daugavpils and Zilupe.
Riga–Jelgava, including lines through to Liepāja.
Riga–Tukums, including trains through to Ventspils.
The first railway station in Riga was constructed to serve as the western terminal station of the new railway line from Riga to Daugavpils.
Construction of the station started in 1858.
The station opened on 12 October 1861 along with the railway line, which connected Riga with Daugavpils and the Saint Petersburg–Warsaw railway line.
In 1889, a Neo-Byzantine style chapel was also built in front of the railway station to commemorate the miraculous survival of Emperor Alexander III and his family at the Borki train disaster in 1888.

Two separate stations were in operation in 19th century — one serving the line to Daugavpils and the other towards Jūrmala. They were joined and reconstructed in 1914 and functioned until the 1960s. In 1960 the current station building was opened and in 1965 — a second one.
There are many stops at this location. The main stop is the railway station, Riga Central Station, which operates all passenger trains within Latvia. Most public transport stops are situated in the nearby streets — Marijas iela, Merķeļa iela, Satekles iela and 13. janvāra iela. Buses and trolleybuses stop here.

Odzienas muižas pils / The Odziena Manor - Destroyed Castle in Latvia, Europe

19.gs. vidū muižkunga Brimmera laikā celtā Odzienas muižas pils savulaik bijusi viena no izteiksmīgākajām Latvijas neogotikas stila celtnēm, kam līdzīgi analogi tapuši Vācijā un Polijā.
Odzienas muižas pirmsākumi skaitāmi jau no 1455. gada.

Overflying RIGA by MICEketeers

The biggest metropolis in the Baltics, Riga perfectly blends timeless tradition and cutting edge cool. Drop in and get energized by a city with surprises on every road and rooftop.

Amazing architecture and history
A Nordic blonde with a fiery heart, there’s much more to Riga than meets the eye.

In its 800 years of turbulent history, everyone from German knights to Swedish kings and Soviet commissars have left their footprints, and today Latvia’s capital is an exciting European metropolis at the crossroads of eastern and northern Europe.

Riga’s astonishing skyline tells the story, as the timeless Gothic spires in the Old Town mingle with the fantastic facades of one of the world’s richest collections of Art Nouveau on the grand boulevards.

Riga is a UNESCO World Heritage site of cobblestones and breathtaking river views, as well as Europe’s Wifi capital with almost 1,000 spots to get online for free.

Bread, beer and Balsam
Riga is an adventure for the taste buds too. The enormous Central Market is a treasure trove of earthy sausage, cheese and black bread, smoked fish, and much more. Sample the goods on a picnic in one of Riga’s lovely parks, or enjoy a hearty meal in many great value bistro and cafes.

Riga Central Market

To wash it down, sample intriguing local beers in the brew pubs along hipster strip Miera iela, or a cocktail with the mysterious Riga Black Balsam in fun-filled bars across town.

Some popular daytrips
This city of 700,000 has enough to keep you busy for days, but it’s also compact enough for easy daytrips to the beautiful Latvian countryside.

Explore the natural paradise of Sigulda with its fairytale castles, romantic vistas and adventure sports, stroll along miles of pine-fringed sandy beaches in the seaside playground Jurmala, and marvel at the Baroque and Rococo splendor of Rundale Palace.

Turaida Castle Fortress, Latvia

There was no organized tour around Turaida Castle (thank heavens). Just time to walk around on our own and try to see some of the different attractions on the grounds. The dog keeper's shed, smithy, servants house, fish basement, steward's house, kiln, church, apple storehouse, gardener's house and sculpture park, granary...

Absolutely not enough time to see one-quarter of these. Turaida Castle had another major highlight in the tower...a high-class jewelry shop that sold reproductions of medieval jewelry. Of course I bought! Need you ask?
