Volgograd (Stalingrad) Russia 4k | Mamayev Kurgan - Walking tour

#Stalingrad #Walkingtour #Мамаевкурган

Mamayev Kurgan is a dominant height overlooking the city of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in Southern Russia. The name in Russian means tumulus of Mamai. The formation is dominated by a memorial complex commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad (August 1942 to February 1943). The battle, a hard-fought Soviet victory over Axis forces on the Eastern Front of World War II, turned into one of the bloodiest battles in human history. At the time of its installation in 1967 the statue, named The Motherland Calls, formed the largest free-standing sculpture in the world; today it is the tallest sculpture of a woman in the world.
When forces of the German Sixth Army launched their attack against the city centre of Stalingrad on 13 September 1942, Mamayev Kurgan (appearing in military maps as Height 102.0) saw particularly fierce fighting between the German attackers and the defending soldiers of the Soviet 62nd Army. Control of the hill became vitally important, as it offered control over the city.
The hill changed hands several times. By 27 September, the Germans again captured half of Mamayev Kurgan. The Soviets held their own positions on the slopes of the hill, as the 284th Rifle Division defended the key stronghold. The defenders held out until 26 January 1943, when the counterattacking Soviet forces relieved them. The battle of the city ended one week later with an utter German defeat.
After the war, the Soviet authorities commissioned the enormous Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex. Vasily Chuikov, who led Soviet forces at Stalingrad, lies buried at Mamayev Kurgan, the only Marshal of the Soviet Union to be buried outside Moscow.
The monumental memorial was constructed between 1959 and 1967, and is crowned by a huge allegorical statue of the Motherland on the top of the hill. The monument, designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich, has the full name The Motherland Calls! It consists of a concrete sculpture, 52 metres tall, and 85 metres from the feet to the tip of the 27-metre sword, dominating the skyline of the city of Stalingrad (later renamed Volgograd).
The construction uses concrete, except for the stainless-steel blade of the sword, and is held on its plinth solely by its own weight. The statue is evocative of classical Greek representations of Nike, in particular the flowing drapery, similar to that of the Nike of Samothrace.

???????? Volgograd, Russia - The Motherland Calls ????????

Volgograd is an important industrial city and the administrative center of Volgograd Oblast, Russia. It is 80 kilometers long, north to south and is situated on the western bank of the Volga River, after which the city was named.

The city became famous for its resistance during the Battle of Stalingrad against the German Army in World War II. It is often regarded as the largest and bloodiest battle in the history of warfare.

A memorial complex commemorating the battle of Stalingrad, dominated by an immense allegorical sculpture The Motherland Calls, was erected on the Mamayev Kurgan, the hill that saw some of the most intense fighting during the battle. With its 85 meters it is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty; it is the tallest statue of a woman in the world.

The Panorama Museum sited on the Volga contains artifacts from World War II. These include a panoramic painting of the battlefield from the location of the monument on Mamayev Kurgan. A rifle of the famous sniper Vasily Zaytsev is also on display.

Here I present a series of photographs on the great Volga River city of Volgograd.
The original settlement dates from around the mid 16th century and documentary evidence of the town, then called Tsaritsyn, the name it bore from 1589-1925.....
The city was renamed Stalingrad after Joseph Stalin on April 10, 1925. This was officially to recognise the city's and Stalin's role in its defence against the Whites between 1918 and 1920.
Stalingrad was completely destroyed during the Great patriotic War and little reaains today of its historic past. In 1961, once again the name of the city was changed to Volgograd as part of a programme of de-Stalinisation following Stalin's death...

The photographs show a fine city that was built after the world, together with the astonishing monument on Mamayev Kurgan to the fallen soldiers who defended the city during the war......

The Motherland Calls

The Motherland Calls | Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia
Central figure Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd is the sculpture The Motherland Calls! Statue towers over the country side at 52 meters. The hill on which stands a monument to Motherland, bulk-its height is about meters. Height Motherland considering the sword is 85 meters sculpture is one of the tallest statues in the world. Both sides to the top of Mamaev Kurgan are several tracks, one of which is from the area of the Tribulation. Along the path there are several tombstones - with the name of those who gave their lives in the battles of Stalingrad. There is also the tomb of the unknown soldier. Just a mound under the statue The Motherland Calls! whose reward was to be 34,505 soldiers buried right here - the defenders of Stalingrad. On the top of the hill at the foot of Mother Motherland is serpentine path along which the 35 granite tombstones heroes of the Soviet Union, members of the Stalingrad Battle. From the foot of the mound to its tip serpentine consists of exactly 200 granite steps height of 15 cm.
Author of the sculpture The Motherland Calls! Volggograd became suptor EV Vucetich. Around the monument there is always lot of rumors and gossip. Perhaps the most pressing issue was the mystery of who was the prototype of the world famous sculpture Vucetic. Someone thinks that face Motherland like a discus thrower Nina Dubadze, while others believe that Vuctick presented Motherland statue features his wife Faith. In fact, the prototype of the main figures of Mamaev Kurgan was Valentina Izotova - waitress (Rodina Mat) of city restaurant Volgograd, she was 26 years old.
Sculpture The Motherland Calls! Vogogradmounted on a pedestal height of tow meters, which in tun rests on a foundation of hidden underground. Construction of the monument the Motherland Calls! on Mamaev Hill went step by step using a special technology. Sculpture inside is supported not only rigid frame, but hundreds of strong ropes that keep the frame to bend under the weight of concrete, the momument stands on the 16 meter foundation. First Image Credit Vadim Burkovsky
During the design of the sculpture The Motherland Calls! Vogograd Vucetic constantly had to make changes tot he construction plan. Little know fact that initially Motherland had to look in a different way: the original draft suggested the existence of 2 figures (and woman kneeling soldier), and in his hand Motherland had not hold a sword, and a red banner. Not found it necessary to Vucetich and sumptuously decorated pedestal of the mother and the stairs, so initially in the project, were replaced path, like a ribbon that encircled the Motherland. Dimensions sculptures have also been changed - The original 36 meters grown up to 52 meters. And finally the construction began in May 1959, the opening of the monument occurred on 15th of October 1967. Its height - 52 meters, the length of here arms outstretched, ups - 20 meters, the length of the sword - 33 meters. Overall height sculptures - 85 meters. Weight monument without foundations - about 8000 tons.
Sword of the Motherland was originally made of stainless steel, titanium lined with leaves. In 1972 replaced the blade, still has to high wind-age and strongly swayed by the wind. Threatening structural strength. New sword made fro fluoridated steel with holes in the top of the blade.

Motherland on Mamev Hill presented in the form of mother convening their heroes to defend the homeland. Sharp lines of the figure, disheveled hair in the wind, her eyes wide and mouth woman, hand stretched out over the city - all this creates a feeling of power and voltage, the atmosphere of the anxiety and movement.
In sharp, swift rush woman stood on the mound. With sword in hand she encourages her son to defend the Fatherland. Her right foot slightly back, torso and head vigorously deployed to the left. Face stern and resolute. Frown, wide open screaming mouth, fanned by wind gusts short hair, strong hands, body shape fitting long dress, fanned by wind gusts ends handkerchief - all this creates a feeling of strength, expression and irresistible striving froward. On the background of the sky it is like a bird soaring in the sky.

Stadium Volgograd Arena:
Located on the banks of the Volga, at the foot of the Mamaev Kurgan, on the site of the dismantled Central Stadium. The construction of a new sports facility began in 2014.
Despite the rather large height of the object, the shape of the facade ensures the most compact placement of the stadium in a historical place.
The main architectural difference of the Volgograd Arena is the largest cable-stayed roof in Russia. Volgograd Arena is the country's first cable-stayed stadium with 45,000 seats.

Sculpture Motherland is calling! - the compositional center of the monument-ensemble To the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad on Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd. One of the tallest statues in the world, the highest statue in Russia.

Monument-museum BK-31 on the embankment of Volgograd.
BK-31 was raised from the bottom of the Volga in November 2017, 75 years after the battle during the Battle of Stalingrad. In October 1942, the warship came under fire from German artillery and sank near Krasnoslobodsk. The team fought to the last. The search engines found the remains of 11 people - they were considered missing.
In May 2017, divers discovered the wreck of an unknown vessel at a depth of seven meters opposite Volgograd. Experts determined that this was a boat of the S-40 project. There were only seven of them, and it was believed that not a single one has survived to this day. Getting him out of the water was no easy task. To begin with, about 150 tons of river sand had to be washed out of the hull.
Complicated the operation and the presence of ammunition on board. So, the divers counted 11 rifles, nine PPSh assault rifles, a machine gun, 70 grenades and 50,000 rounds of ammunition, four TNT bombs, two pistols and 180 shells.
On board were the remains of the crew members. According to archival documents and personal belongings, it was possible to identify the dead. Two even found relatives who were present at the reburial.
After large-scale restoration work, the armored boat is part of the memorial complex in memory of the sailors of the Volga military flotilla who defended Stalingrad. The ship, riddled with enemy shells, is placed in a glass sarcophagus, and the holes are highlighted in red in the evening, while the armored boat itself floats on virtual waves.

River Station.
The largest river station in Russia and Europe is located in Volgograd, on the central embankment of the city. The author of the building project was the Leningrad architect Timofey Sadovsky. The length of the building of the river port is about three hundred meters (identical to the length of Red Square in Moscow), the width is 36 meters, and the height of the upper point of the structure (washer) is 47 meters. Six motor ships can moor at the port at the same time, and the waiting room inside the building will comfortably accommodate more than 700 people.
The construction of the river station was carried out in two stages: first of all, berths were erected on the reclaimed territory and a waiting room (early 1980s), and later the Central Concert Hall was completed (1989), which allowed the river station to become, in addition to transport, also the cultural center of the city. The capacity of the concert hall, where organ music evenings are held, is about a thousand seats. Also on the territory of the river station there are: a restaurant (in the panoramic part of the building - a puck), a cafe, a fitness room and nightclubs.
Together with a beautiful embankment, the station building is an ornament and cultural landmark of the city, as well as a place of recreation and entertainment for guests and residents of the city.
