Greece is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, ranking in the world's top 20 countries. According to the Greek Ministry of Tourism, the nation received about 33 million visitors in 2018, a very large number for a small country of 11 million. Visitors are drawn to the country's beaches and reliable sunny summer weather, its nightlife, historical sites and natural beauty.
Over 90% of visitors come to Greece from other European countries, although in recent years there have been growing numbers of tourists from other world regions. The vast majority of visitors arrive during the tourist season, which is April through October. Peak season is July through August, and most of the tourists and tourism industry are concentrated in Crete, the Dodecanese, Cyclades, and Western Greek Islands, and to a lesser extent the Peloponnese and the Halkidiki peninsula in Macedonia.
Greece has an immense length of coastlines (16,000 km) and the country has still countless of beautiful places without large-scale tourism, which in most cases have nothing less to offer than their mainstream counterparts. You may be intrigued to visit a particular place in Greece that a friend of you has suggested, but in reality the options are more than you can imagine.
Many first-time visitors arrive in Greece with specific images in mind and are surprised to discover a country with such regional and architectural diversity. The famous whitewashed homes and charming blue-domed churches only characterize a specific region of the country (the Cyclades Islands). Architecture varies greatly from one region to the next depending on the local history. Visitors will find Neoclassical architecture in the cities of Ermoupolis and Nafplion, Ottoman-influenced buildings in Grevená and Kozáni, whitewashed Cycladic homes on the island of Paros, and pastel-coloured baroque homes and churches on Corfu. Although anything but famous tourist destinations, these towns do have lots of great sights of archaeological and geological importance, and offer incredible vistas and abundant nature.
The best time to visit is from early June to late July, when the wheat fields take a beautiful golden colour that creates an incredible contrast to the sapphire-blue of the sky.
Being very close to Egnatia Odos (A2), these cities are excellent places to visit and see how Greeks really live their everyday lives.
In the first part of our roadtrip, we start from Grevena and drive all the way to Kivotos, a small village located North of Grevena, surrounded by beautiful nature, and vast wheat and lavender fields.
Alas, even though videos can give you a visual cue of the natural beauty, they cannot provide you with a sense of the warmth, aroma, and sounds one can enjoy in this trip.
These are all things that you must find out by travelling there yourselves!

Παρόλο που είναι κάθε άλλο παρά διάσημοι τουριστικοί προορισμοί, αυτές οι πόλεις έχουν πολλά εξαιρετικά αξιοθέατα υψηλής αρχαιολογικής και γεωλογικής αξίας, ενώ παράλληλα προσφέρουν στον ταξιδιώτη εκπληκτικά τοπία και πλούσια φύση.
Η καλύτερη εποχή για να τα επισκεφτείτε είναι από τις αρχές Ιουνίου ως τα τέλη Ιουλίου, όταν τα σιτοχώραφα παίρνουν ένα όμορφο χρυσαφί χρώμα που δημιουργεί μιαν εκπληκτική αντίθεση με το ζαφειρένιο μπλε του ουρανού.
Όντας πολύ κοντά στην Εγνατία Οδό (Α2), αυτές οι πόλεις είναι εξαιρετικά σημεία για μια γρήγορη επίσκεψη που θα σας δώσει μιαν ιδέα του πώς ζουν οι κάτοικοι λιγότερο τουριστικών πόλεων.
Στο πρώτο μέρος του ταξιδιού μας, ξεκινάμε από τα Γρεβενά με κατεύθυνση το χωριό Κιβωτός, που βρίσκεται στα βόρεια των Γρεβενών και περιβάλλεται από υπέροχη φύση, αλλά και απέραντα χωράφια με σιτηρά και λεβάντες.
Αλίμονο, παρόλο που τα βίντεο σας προσφέρουν μια οπτική ιδέα της φυσικής ομορφιάς αυτού του τόπου, δεν μπορούν να σας μεταφέρουν τη ζεστασιά, τα αρώματα και τους ήχους που μπορείτε να απολαύσετε σε αυτό το ταξίδι.

While Kozani is most famous for its high-quality saffron (or krokos, as it is called in Greece), Vergina is a well-know destination for Ancient Greek History enthusiasts, as it is located extremely close to the Arcaheological Site of Aegae, the first Macedonian City, its many royal tombs, and impressive museum.
Being very close to Egnatia Odos (A2), these are both excellent places to visit as you explore Mainland Greece.
In the fourth and final part, we complete our travel from Veroia, a beautiful city with rich history, to Vergina, a sleepy town in Imathia Regional Unit, that in the past was known as Aigai (or Aegae), the capital of the Hellenic Kingdom of Macedonia.
Nowadays, its ancient sites, especially its royal tombs, and museum, attract tourists from all around the world.
Along the road, we'll pass through a sleepy little village named Agia Varvara and over Haliacmon River through the dam and artificial lake of Agia Varvara.
Alas, even though videos can give you a visual cue of the natural beauty, they cannot provide you with a sense of the warmth, aroma, and sounds one can enjoy in this trip.
These are all things that you must find out by travelling there yourselves!

Σήμερα, οι αρχαιολογικοί χώροι της, ιδιαίτερα οι βασιλικοί τάφοι, καθώς και το μουσείο, προσελκύουν πλήθος τουριστών από όλο τον κόσμο.
Κατά μήκος της διαδρομής, θα περάσουμε από το μικρό και γαλήνιο χωριουδάκι Αγία Βαρβάρα, αλλά και πάνω από τον ποταμό Αλιάκμονα μέσω του φράγματος της τεχνητής λίμνης της Αγίας Βαρβάρας.
Αλίμονο, παρόλο που τα βίντεο σας προσφέρουν μια οπτική ιδέα της φυσικής ομορφιάς αυτού του τόπου, δεν μπορούν να σας μεταφέρουν τη ζεστασιά, τα αρώματα και τους ήχους που μπορείτε να απολαύσετε σε αυτό το ταξίδι.

Being very close to Egnatia Odos (A2), these are both excellent places to visit as you explore Mainland Greece.
In the first part, we start our journey from Vatero, a village that is located only a couple of kilometers west of Kozani, and we follow a small ring-road around the main city in order to avoid traffic, as we make our way towards Drepano, a village located North-East of Kozani.
Along the way, we'll pass through a couple of smaller villages, and we'll be able to see Egnatia Odos (A2), as well as lots of sunfower and corn fields.
Alas, even though videos can give you a visual cue of the natural beauty, they cannot provide you with a sense of the warmth, aroma, and sounds one can enjoy in this trip.
These are all things that you must find out by travelling there yourselves!

Κατά μήκος της διαδρομής θα περάσουμε από δύο μικρότερα χωριά και θα έχουμε την ευκαιρία να δούμε από μακριά την Εγνατία Οδό (Α2), καθώς και αρκετά χωράφια με καλαμπόκια και ηλιοτρόπια.

In the second part, we continue from Drepano, a village located North-East of Kozani, take the old road that connects Kozani to Veroia, and we are headed to Zoodochos Pigi, a small settlement atop Vermio Mountain Range, that used to be a main resting spot along the road; travellers used to stop there in order to have lunch, or drink coffee and prepare, mentally and physically, for the arduous task of crossing over to Central Macedonia, or to rest a bit after dealing with all the twists and turns, trucks and slow vehicles of the Kastania mountain road.
Nowadays, Egnatia Odos has made this road all but obsolete, as it takes less than half an hour to cross the mountains, while back in the day, it could take over an hour, depending on conditions.
Along the way, we'll pass through a couple of smaller villages, and we'll be able to see Egnatia Odos (A2), as well as lots of sunfower and corn fields.

Στο δεύτερο μέρος συνεχίζουμε από το Δρέπανο, ένα χωριό στα βορειοανατολικά της Κοζάνης και πιάνουμε την εθνική οδό Κοζάνης - Βέροιας μέχρι τη Ζωοδόχο Πηγή, έναν μικρό οικισμό που την περίοδο προ Εγνατίας Οδού, αποτελούσε σημαντικό σημείο για ξεκούραση και φαγητό ή καφέ πριν ή μετά τη διέλευση της οροσειράς του Βερμίου στο ταξίδι από ή προς την Κεντρική Μακεδονία.
Σήμερα ο δρόμος είναι ξεχασμένος, αφού μέσω της Εγνατίας Οδού, ένα ταξίδι που ξεπερνούσε τη μία ώρα, πλέον γίνεται σε μόλις 25 λεπτά.
Κατά μήκος της διαδρομής θα περάσουμε από δύο μικρότερα χωριά και θα έχουμε την ευκαιρία να δούμε από μακριά την Εγνατία Οδό (Α2), καθώς και αρκετά χωράφια με καλαμπόκια και ηλιοτρόπια.
Αλίμονο, παρόλο που τα βίντεο σας προσφέρουν μια οπτική ιδέα της φυσικής ομορφιάς αυτού του τόπου, δεν μπορούν να σας μεταφέρουν τη ζεστασιά, τα αρώματα και τους ήχους που μπορείτε να απολαύσετε σε αυτό το ταξίδι.
Αυτά είναι εμπειρίες που θα πρέπει να βιώσετε ταξιδεύοντας οι ίδιοι ως εκεί!

What is being rated and how?
The rating is totally objective and is being done by a quite advanced algorithm, but to put it simply:
Curvature:
Tells you how big a fraction of the road is curvy/twisty and how sharp those curves are. Two separate algorithms are used for calculating the curvature.
Slopes and elevation:
The maximum and average elevations, road hilliness, number and level of slope changes.
Scenery:
The not obstructed views of valleys and mountains with emphasis on high elevation difference between the view spot and the road. The waviness of the surrounding area is also taken into account.
Ride quality:
Average ride time in relation to the road curvature, and also the percentage of the road that runs outside the city zones. Both surface quality, the possibility of overtaking, and speed limits are reflected here.
The final score:
The final score is calculated in a way that helps with finding not only beautiful but also fun to drive roads (which is especially important for owners of sports cars and motorcycles)
The basic formula looks basically similar to: (curvature+slopes and elevation+scenery+ride quality)/4
Later the score is reduced depending on the length of the road. Simpy the shorter the road the higher the score reduction.
