Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary was created by the Maharashtra government in 1985. UNESCO classified it as World heritage site in 2012.
You can enjoy this place have a safari ride, doing kayaking, take a boat trip, get mesmerized by the sunrise, explore the island and fort, relax near a fire camp and many other things.

Koynanagar is a town in Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the Chiplun-Sangli state highway on the banks of Koyna River. The town is small but famous for Koyna Dam and the Koyna Hydroelectric Project which is the largest completed hydroelectric project of India. An earthquake in 1967 flattened the city.
Koyna Nagar is nestled in the Western Ghats, about 746 m (2,448 ft) above sea level, and hence has a tolerable climate for most of the year.
The Nehru Gardens, the Botanical Gardens and Kumbarli Ghat viewpoint are the most popular tourist destinations in the vicinity. Hordes of picnickers, mostly from Pune, come to the area during the monsoon season, to visit waterfalls and see the rolling green hills with misty tops and foggy valleys in the Kumbarli Ghat, which is a mountain pass.
The Nehru Gardens, a landscaped garden which overlooks the Koyna Dam, is two kilometres away from the town. The Botanical Gardens is five kilometres from Nehru Park. It contains rare species of plants, some of which are used for their medicinal properties and in research. All the plants are native to the Western Ghats.

Kumbharli Ghat is a mountain pass in Maharashtra, India that connects the coastal Ratnagiri district in Konkan region of Maharashtra with the Satara District in the Desh region. It cuts across the Western Ghats range. It is one of few link roads between the Konkan and Ghatmaatha in Maharashtra. It links the Major cities, Chiplun (Ratnagiri district) and Karad (Satara district). This ghat is on the Karad-Chiplun state highway. Also, this highway joins to the NH-4 near Umbraj. Malharpeth, Patan and Koyananagar are the major cities on this road. Kumbharli ghat has historical significance. Kumbharli ghat was considered as the main transportation centre at that time.
The Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra, India. It is a rubble-concrete dam constructed on the Koyna River. nestled in the Western Ghats on the state highway between Chiplun and Karad. 25 km from Kumbharli Ghat. Today the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed hydroelectric power plant in India having a total installed capacity of 1,960 MW. Road trip planner Pune – A trip to Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary (Chandoli National Park - Sahyadri Tiger Reserve)
Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve are a part of the Chandoli National Park. Located at a distance of about 196 kilometers from Pune (Magarpatta), it takes about 4.30 hours by road. Google locations are provided in the description below. One can expect to sight Indian Gaur, Sambar deer and tigers. We did not see any of these, by the way . Best time to visit are post monsoon months as the weather is usually pleasant and forest is more lush. Summer months can vary between sultry to excruciatingly hot.
We stayed in Forest Escapes Koyna, one of the better resorts in the area. Rooms are large and are decently appointed. Resort is well maintained and offers plenty of activities. Service is courteous. Food is good however the buffets are basic and do not offer a lot of choice. Room rates start from 9000 rupees per night on double occupancy. There are not too many restaurants around the resort. Resort can also organise a private barbecue by the Koyna river upon request and at an additional price. Forest Escapes Koyna is plastic and paper free eco resort. Resort also has a private access to the river bank which is clean and pristine.
Resort can arrange for a safari for an additional price. Safari usually lasts for about 5 hours and conducted twice a day (5.30 AM & 2.00 PM). Resort offers other activities such as bird watching, night jungle trek and such other activities at no additional price.
It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Carry sunglasses, hat/cap and sun tan lotion.
Safety tips:
Road from Pune to the resort is in a good condition.
Shoes are a must for safari.
It is advised to wear face mask during the safari as the roads can be very dusty during the summer months.

Fuel cost
Resort Tariff – Rs. 9500 per room per night for the mid category.
Safari Charges – Rs. 3800 for the entire jeep
Food – We had taken a MAP package that included breakfast and lunch/dinner.
Riverside Barbeque – Rs. 1500 for the set up and food at actuals from the resort restaurant. Food needs to be ordered at least 5 hours in advance.
