Ooty is a hill station in Tamil nadu, a southern state of India. The main attraction of Ooty is toy train, (Nilgiri mountain railway line), Ooty lake and shooting points. Although, monsoon is off season here but, tourists come here throughout the year to enjoy it's natural beauty.
This popular tourist place was habituated long ago by the the then british ruler's. The average height of Ooty is nearly 7000 ft above sea level and for this reason the weather remains comfortable throughout the year. Although, at winter, temperature drops to subzero at late night, but due to the location, no snowfall happens. Ooty in monsoon is also pleasant. The main attraction, Ooty lake is a man-made lake and it was made for fishing. Tamilnadu Tourism Ooty Boat House is by the bank of Ooty Lake.
How to go Kolkata to ooty:
Ooty is connected with Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and many other prime cities of India via it's nearest railhead Coimbatore. This tour place is also easily accessible from Bengaluru (Bangalore) and Mysuru (Mysore) by road via Mysore-Ooty highway in 6 hrs and 3 hrs respectively. Coimbatore has one international airport which connects it through flight from Kolkata, Delhi and other prime indian cities. From Coimbatore, it takes 2 hrs to reach Ooty.
One of the main tourist attraction of Ooty is toy train, which now runs from Mettupalayam station through Nilgiri Mountain Railway Line and take 5 hrs to reach Ooty. Tourists from all over the world come here to enjoy the journey through the Ooty hills. This narrow gauge railway line has been included into UNESCO World heritage. The Ooty tour never completes without enjoying Ooty toy train ride. Toy train from Ooty to Coonoor, one way journey is sufficient to enjoy the natural beauty of Nilgiri Hills. This journey takes nearly 1 and half hour to reach Coonoor. The journey through the hills, tunnels and pine forests will remain in memory forever. Ooty toy train advance booking can be done online or from ooty railway station in person. As tickets for toy train in ooty has high demand, prior online booking is advisable.
This south indian hill station is very popular among tourists for its natural beauty and pleasant weather. The town has one famous government Rose garden, which is the home for nearly 4000 types of roses. The zoo and botanical garden is also very popular. Other Ooty visiting places are, pine forest, pykara lake and pykara falls, shooting points, museum, thread garden etc. In Coonoor, the tea gardens and the Sim's park is famous tourist spot around Ooty.
Where to stay in Ooty:
The town has many hotels, hostels, zostels of different class and budget. Tamilnadu tourism development corporation (TTDC) has two hotels here, unit 1 and 2. The government youth hostel is situated along with unit 2. The arrangements in all the government accommodation is very good and a budget ooty trip is possible with these.

Kotagiri is a perfect alternative to ooty as it's much more peaceful and beautiful.
We covered 2 major attractions during our travel i.e Kodanad view point and Catherine falls.
Kodanad view point : The Kodanad View Point captures the attention of all its visitors with its beautiful sceneries of the Nilgiri ranges.This place has an unexplored scenic beauty and gives tourists, a spectacular view of the Blue Mountains and the valley below.
Catherine Falls : This is the second highest falls in the Nilgiris and a great trekking trail. Tourists who seek adventure in the hills can satisfy their desire in this wonderful trekking destination.
The best time to visit the waterfalls is during the months of October to May soon after the monsoon.
Kotagiri offers a wide range of lodges, villas, resorts and cottages. We chose to stay in IVC Villa which is in outskirts and surrounded by tea plantation.

This Nov 2021, we drove to kotagiri. Kotagiri is a less known place for those who just go to Ooty. Kotagiri is on the way to Coimbatore from ooty. Kotagiri is filled with tea estates and all the tourist attractions will be very less crowded. We stayed at Amazing valley resort in Kotagiri. For this resort, we drove 5-6 km further from kotagiri town. On day1 we just drove to this amazing valley resort in kotagiri and relaxed. Day2 we drove to Catherin waterfalls. This drive is covered in this video.

• Tea Gardens
• Kodanad View Point
• The town is surrounded by many tourist spots. One very popular place is the Kodanad View Point. Accessible by road, 16 km (10 miles) from Kotagiri or about 30 minutes by vehicle, it provides a splendid view of the great Mysore Plateau to one side and the picturesque 500 acre farming cooperative called Thengu mara haada, which seems like a green mosaic amidst the shrubland; lazily meandering this little village is the Bhavani River.
• John Sullivan's bungalow, the one he built during his stay, has been renovated and is open to the public. It is located in Kannerimukku, about 20 minutes from the main town.
• Located within Kotagiri town, Longwood forest, a pristine tropical evergreen forest is a secluded refuge for those seeking peace and quiet, it is home to the flying fox/Malabar Squirrel (a large arboreal squirrel) that is rarely seen, there is also a resident family of about 20 bison which can be seen grazing in the evenings just outside the forest on Milidhane road.
• The Nehru Park in the town has a big complex which houses a temple of the Kotas, the Gandhi Maidanam which is the public playground, congregation centre and the flood shelter which is used in normal times for indoor games. A private park about 3 km from the town on coonoor road specialises in roses and is a must see in the months, March to June.
• On the northwest of Rangaswamy Peak, after The Denad village is found the Rangaswamy Pillar, which is an extraordinary isolated rocky pillar rising in solitary grandeur to a height of some 400 feet narrow and has sheer sides, which are quite unclimbable. Kil-kotagiri, Sholurmattam, Karagodumattam and Kadasholai are the places enroute to the Rangaswamy peak.
Kotagiri abounds in big european style bungalows built by the British and most of them retain their englishness, are still very habitable and have been conveted into upmarket homestays. New constructions too are aplenty but at the cost of aesthetics.
There are numerous tea factories producing the famous Nilgiri tea. The famous Nilgiri thailam (Eucalyptus oil) is distilled in small shacks in a rudimentary manner.
Kotagiri also has some gold deposits, which were mined to levels possible during the days of the British Raj. Presently research is going on to determine if it would be possible to extract more gold from the mines.
There is also some considerable bauxite in the area.
• Kodanad Viewpoint. The town is surrounded by many tourist spots. One very popular place is the Kodanad View Point. • 3 Rangasamy Peak. Pilgrim centre ( | )
• 4 Rangaswamy Pillar, Denad Village, Rangaswamy Peak. • St. Catherine Waterfalls, Aravenu. Other places of interest are the St.Catherine waterfalls near Aravenu, the Uyilatty falls, 15 km from Kotagiri town and the 1,785 m (5,856 feet) high Rangasamy Peak. It is a conical peak and is the most sacred hill on the plateau. Being the Holy deity of the Nilgiris, this shrine is visited by thousands of pilgrims from the 'Kongu' region and other places every year. According to Hindu Legend, Lord Rangaswamy used to live at Karamadai in Coimbatore district on the plains but quarrelled with his wife and came to live alone here. Two-foot prints on the rock not far from Arakadu village below the peak, are stated to be the proof for this event. ( | )

Getting there:
Ooty is about 84 km from Coimbatore city airport. The drive on NH948 and NH181 en route Metuppalayam takes about 2 hours, 35 minutes by car. You can also get to the hills from Metuppalayam foothills via the picturesque Nigilri Mountain Railway or the Ooty Toy Train as it's popularly know. This heritage railway journey is a commute of 4 hours and 30 minutes, via Conoor.
Travel tip:
Self-driving car services are better than travel and tour services. Zoom Cars, Royal Picks, and Comfortcarz are a few services that are located near the Coimbatore airport.
