Brno Travel Guide - Czech Republic Memorable Moments
Brno (German: Brünn, Moravian dialect: Štatl) is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and the largest city in the historical Moravian region. Founded around the year 1000, Brno is located in a beautiful natural environment between South Moravian vineyards and the Moravian Karst, and is an easy drive to the nearby Austrian border.
Brno was founded about a thousand years ago, receiving city status in 1243. Surviving sieges from the Hussites in 1428 and 1430, the city also successfully defended itself from Swedish armies during the Thirty Years' War. With the original capital of Olomouc falling into Swedish hands in 1641, Brno became the seat of administration for the Margraviate of Moravia (a borderland region of the Austrian Empire), which stayed long after the war's end. The city flourished during the 19th century as it rapidly industrialized and its population exploded. Brno would later serve as the capital of the semi-autonomous Moravian Land in the First Republic of Czechoslovakia. After surviving World War II intact, the newly-installed Communist Party abolished Moravia's autonomous status to subdivide the country into regions (kraj) in 1949, ending Brno's high political prominence. Contemporary Brno is a mixture of different architectural styles, ranging from the Gothic, Baroque, Art Noveau, and Socialist. Arguably the Czech Republic's second most important cultural centre that often competes with Prague in prestige, Brno has the second largest historic preservation zone in the country (the largest in Prague, the third in nearby Olomouc). Three castles are located in the immediate proximity of the city: Špilberk (a former royal castle for the rulers of Moravia dating to the 13th century, and later an Austrian military bastion), Veveří Castle (near Brno Lake), and Líšeň Castle (to the city's east).
Unlike Prague, Brno has yet to be discovered by mass tourism, meaning that prices and crowds are both minimal and manageable. Low budget accommodation is relatively expensive, due to lack of competition. Brno is the undoubted cultural hub of Moravia, home to a number of notable Moravian institutions, e.g. Moravian Gallery, Moravian Museum, National Theatre Brno, Brno City Theatre, etc. It is a city with a long tradition in motor racing (on the Masaryk Circuit), huge exhibitions and trade fairs (in the Central European Exhibition Center), and as a vibrant university city. With 89,000 university students in a city of 380,000, Brno is the Czech Republic's largest student city by percentage of population. Since 1998, an international firework competition, the Ignis Brunensis, has been held annually every year at the turn of May and June, drawing over 100 to 200,000 visitors a year.
The most interesting places in Brno are the Brno Underground, a labyrinth of cellars including the second biggest ossuary in Europe (after the Catacombs of Paris), the city's three sounding castles, the iconic St. Peter and Paul Cathedral atop Petrov hill, the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in the Old Brno District, St. Jacob's Church, the Moravian Museum, Lužánky Park (the oldest public park in the country), Denis Gardens, and various historical squares, churches, and palaces.
There are also other places outside the city centre worth visiting, e.g. the old Jewish cemetery in Brno-Židenice (the biggest one in Moravia), or the Marian Valley in Brno-Líšeň, a cascade of lakes between forested hills. From the north, Brno is surrounded by hills and very pleasant nature, probably the most notable place is the Moravian Karst.

V roce 2001 vyrostla na Bílé hoře mezi Štramberkem a Kopřivnicí neobvyklá telekomunikační věž. Její autor našel inspiraci ve struktuře DNA - schodiště rozhledny, které má 136 schodů, se podobným způsobem obtáčí kolem betonového sloupu až k terase ve výšce 26 metrů (věž měří celkem 43 metrů), odkud je nádherný výhled na nejvyšší vrcholy Beskyd a Hostýnských vrchů, na Novojičínsko, Oderské vrchy i Ostravskou pánev.
Pro stavbu bylo použito 520 t betonu a 39 t ocelových konstrukcí. Samostatný železobetonový vrchol věže (nad vyhlídkovou plošinou) má váhu 11 t. Pro zachování koloritu okolní krajiny bylo přeloženo i nadzemní vedení elektrické přípojky do země.

Ostrava is the 3rd biggest city in the Czech Republic and the government center of the Moravian-Silesian Region. The town is located in the north-east part of the country and it is home to more than 300,000 people.
The city was founded in 1267 but in the Second World War, Ostrava was bombarded quite heavily. The after-war reconstruction created a number of beautiful and architecturally supreme buildings that were all different in style and functionality.
If you ever have a chance to visit this beautiful city you will notice that street art is nearly everywhere! We really loved this about Ostrava. In the city center there’s a large mural on a disheveled building. It’s called the Madonna “Ostravica” and it’s the largest street art piece in the Czech Republic. It was created by the famous American street artist Nils Westergard in 2016 over a weekend. He did this in order to help the new owners of a building in a dismal shape, which used to house a shopping center, but is now being transformed into a center for culture

 Rožnov is a town in Beskydy mountains in Moravia. We spent a week there in 2005 visiting Jindra's classmate from Medical School Dr. Ema Hanusova. While the ladies were reminiscing I made some hiking trips to the surrounding mountains . We also visited by bus Stramberk with the castle with chimney-like tower and Koprivnice with auto museum Tatra. One afternoon we went to the concert given by the young musicians from the local Music School. The performances were impressive.
Rožnov pod Radhoštěm je příjemné město v Beskydech. Byli jsme tam na náštěvě u Jindřiny kolegyně z ročníku Dr. Emy Hanušové v roce 2005. Zatímco dámy vzpomínaly, já jsem trochu chodil po horách, protože bylo krásně teplo a slunce. Navštívili jsme také město Štramberk s pověstnou hradní věží trůbou a kopřivnické muzeum automobilů Tatra. Jedno odpoledne jsme šli na koncert hudební školy a byl to požitek poslouchat mladé, nadané hudebníky.

Vinohrady (Royal Vineyards) is a cadastral district in Prague. It is so named because it was once covered in vineyards dating from the 14th century. Vinohrady lies in the municipal and administrative districts of Prague 2 (west part), Prague 3 (north-east part) and Prague 10 (south-east part), minor parts also of Prague 1 (Prague State Opera and Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia), and Prague 4 (near Nusle).
Between 1788–1867 it was called Viničné Hory (Vineyard Mountains). From 1867 to 1968, it was called Královské Vinohrady (Royal Vineyards). In 1875, Královské Vinohrady was divided into two parts, Královské Vinohrady I and Královské Vinohrady II; part I was renamed Žižkov and part II to Královské Vinohrady in 1877. In 1922 Královské Vinohrady was made part of Prague as district XII. In 1949, the west part was conjoined with Prague 2, and the east remained a separate district, Prague 12. In 1960, when the Prague division was reduced from 16 to 10 administrative districts, the north part of Prague 12 was conjoined with Žižkov into Prague 3, and the south part was joined to Prague 10. Local patriots say that the real reason was that Královské Vinohrady was known as a bourgeois district and thus politically unreliable for the then-ruling Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
Vinohradská street in Prague is one of the important streets of the city. It leads from the border of Nové Město from the crossroads of the western branch of the southwestern main road from the territory of the wine-growing cadastral area of vineyards, žižkov, and a narrow house at the corners, The length of the street is about 4 km. Today's street name comes from the Vinohrady district, named after the many vineyards that were located on its territory.
Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) is The central square of Vinohrady with a park at its center. The square is dominated by the neo-Gothic Cathedral of St Ludmila, built from 1888 to 1893 according to plans drawn by architect Josef Mocker and the Art Nouveau Vinohrady Theatre, dating to 1904-1907. Every year, náměstí Míru is the venue for many cultural and social events. The neo-Gothic Church of St Lyudmila is one of the dominant features of the Vinohrady district. It was built according to designs by Josef Mocker from 1888 to 1892. Two 60 m towers with two bells are like two hands clasped in prayer. The church is a brick three-aisled basilica with a transept in the shape of a cross. Its interior is lit by stained glass windows depicting figures of saints and richly decorated with sculptures and paintings. Vinohrady Theatre ( Divadlo na Vinohradech) is a theatre in Vinohrady, Prague, was build 27 February 1905.

Nazdááár, tak máme konečně hotovo další video z našeho letního tripu po Moravě a to tentokrát z úžasného muzea v Kopřivnici, které ukrývá několik desítek nádherných vozů s tváří, jak říkám. Dnes jsou auta mnohdy jeden kus ničeho. Vozy nám nic neříkají, jen slouží. Ano je to jejich hlavní poslání. Jenže vozy tatra nám sloužili a zároveň nám něco říkali. Každý kus měl nějaký smysl a uvnitř vozu to bylo na tu dobu jako v pokoji. Užívali jste si vůni dřeva, kovu, kůže atd...
Tak snad se vám náš výlet do Kopřivnického muzea líbil a určitě jej navštivte také. Je o co stát a Kopřivnice není jen technické muzeum Tatry, ve městě naleznete Lašské muzeum a muzeum fojství. Nedaleko je také Štramberk a její dominantou je samotná Štramberská trúba a vychutnat si zde můžete úžasné Štramberské uši.
