what is Trier | the oldest city in Germany (sights, tour & food)

Trier is more lovely, beautiful and interesting then I expected! So I wanted to make a video covering all the important and not important things that are in Trier.

I was also surprised to find out that Trier is also the oldest city in Germany. However underrated on the list to visit, most likely because it is small.

If you would like to support & donate my silly little videos:

But I'm excited to learn more about the city and places to go/visit.

Exploring GERMANY'S Amazing CASTLES: Road Trip Through Mosel Valley (Part 1)

What's the first thing you think of when you think of Germany? Okay, maybe it's not Germany's beautiful castles, but something like beer, bread or the Autobahn. But we think that castles should also be very high up on that list!

In this video (which is part 1 of 2), we go on a road trip in Germany, our home country, to explore Mosel Valley and go on a medieval castle hopping tour. Mosel Valley is a popular travel destination, for Germans and travellers from other countries as well. Mosel valley is one of Germany's 13 wine areas and it's well known for its excellent Riesling wines. The area also played an important role in Roman as well as medieval times, which is when the castles were built that we'll visit on this trip.

First up we visit Eltz castle (Burg Eltz), one of Germany's most beautiful and in our eyes underrated castle. We then drive to Beilstein and hike up to Metternich castle to enjoy a great view of the Mosel river. We also have lunch in Beilstein to eat German asparagus, which is in season right now. It's also one of those foods that German worship and that almost everyone goes crazy about when it's in season. We then make our way to Geierlay suspension bridge. It used to be the longest suspension bridge in Germany and it's publicly accessible 24/7. A more adventurous experience than we expected!

Also be sure to join us in part 2 of this German castle series when we visit Cochem castle and then end our road trip by sleeping in a medieval castle!

In this video:
0:00 Start of our German Castle Road Trip
0:51 So what is the Mosel Valley?
1:20 Germany's Most Underrated Castle (Eltz castle)
5:58 German lunch in Beilstein – why Germans go crazy about Asparagus
7:06 Trying Riesling (white wine) ice cream
7:59 Walking through Beilstein, a very cute German village
8:42 Enjoying a great view of the Mosel on top of Metternich castle
11:19 Exploring one of Germany's longest suspension bridges
13:31 Geierlay suspension bridge (scarier than we thought!)

Trier, Germany - World Heritage Journeys

As one of Germany’s oldest cities, Trier was a Roman colony from the 1st century AD. It became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy at the end of the 3rd century, when it was known as the ‘second Rome’. Its architectural achievements, like the massive Porta Nigra—the largest Roman gate north of the Alps—are reminders of its past grandeur.

Inscribed as a UNESCO site in 1986, Trier boasts one of the largest collections of preserved Roman buildings outside of Rome – an outstanding testimony to this ancient civilisation.

Trier in 5 minutes ???????? Trier is the oldest city in Germany

Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Founded more than 2000 years ago, Trier was even once the capital of the Roman Empire. The city is famous for Porta Nigra, Roman bathhouses and for its location along the Moselle River. Ready for a cool weekend trip?

Porta Nigra is the landmark of Trier. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. If you take the stairs, you'll get a panoramic view of the city of Trier. From here you can walk directly to the main market square in the old town.

Nearby is Trier Cathedral. It is the oldest church in Germany. It combines architectural styles from all epochs since the ancient world. The most important relic in the cathedral is the Holy Rock.

Passing the Palais, you come to the Imperial Baths. Today, they are only ruins left. Further out, you can look over the vineyards and the Moselle from the Petrisberg.

If you're in Trier for more than a day, it's definitely worth taking a trip into the surrounding countryside. We stayed for 2 days at the Landal Hochwald holiday park (ad) for a few relaxing days. Just let your soul relax. Hiking, biking, mini golf and delicious food. Click here for the offers from the holiday park: *

Trier (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Trier is considered to be oldest city in Germany and it has a fascinating history to match. Founded in 18 BC under the Roman Emperor Augustus, it is protected by a city wall with 5 gates. It has lived through 5 emperors and, under Constantine the Great, became the centre for the spread of Christianity north of the Alps. We will learn about all of this and more on a walking tour through the Roman streets of the city.

An important part of Roman life in Trier was a visit to the baths so the city has many different baths to choose from, both private or public, as well as the grand, monumental Imperial Baths, built into the city walls.

Next, we get a taste of the more barbaric side of Roman life at the city amphitheatre. Here, cruel battles between wild animals and gladiators were shown as a form of entertainment. Beneath the arena is a large cellar, where those sentenced to death were imprisoned alongside wild lions and tigers.

Our stroll through the old town continues on past the Petrus Tower and magnificent houses of the nobles and superiors of the church, to the cathedral square. The cathedral is marvellous and represents a period of more than 1650 years of art and architecture.

We reach the main market, the lively centre of the old town, often referred to as the most beautiful place in Germany. Here, we can admire the Franken Tower, a beautiful church and other town houses.

We round off the tour at the Black Gate, the “Porta Nigra”, the city’s largest and most powerful gate built in ancient Roman architectural style at 36 metres long, 21 metres wide and 30 metres high. This gate along with much of the beautiful city deservedly became a world cultural heritage site in 1973.

Trier, Germany (ເຢຍລະມັນ) || Ep. 7 Yiem Yahm - The Family Edition

Trier is Germany's oldest city. It's one of ancient Rome's capitals and used to be called Rome of the North. Trier has one of the best preserved Roman ruins, the Porta Nigra, and one of the oldest cathedrals in Germany, Dom Trier.

Episode 7: TRIER, GERMANY
#yiemyahm #ຢ້ຽມຢາມ #familytravel #trier #germany #roadtrip #drivingineurope

It also has one of Germany's oldest outdoor markets that is still being used today. While enjoying the beautiful cityscape, there's plenty of places to enjoy riesling wine tasting as well. Don't forget to try Germany's best currywurst shop here in Trier as well. We also learned that Karl-Marx was born here. To top off the trip, we went up the 72 meter high City Skyliner that happened to placed there when we were visiting - giving us a 72 meter high and 360 degree panorama view of the city.

There's plenty more to do, but because this was a short day trip, we were only able to visit some sites. We definitely plan on visiting again.

MOSELLE VALLEY | 4K | EP 5: Trier - The Oldest City in Germany

The current situation due to floods in Pakistan is alarming, Please donate to help the victims:

The Moselle Valley is a region in south-western Germany. More commonly the two major cities marking it's edges are Koblenz and Trier. Both cities enriched in German and Roman history, along with the array of smaller picturesque towns along the Mosel river. I took a trip from Koblenz to Trier, visiting some of the places in between. This is how my experience went. Hope you like it.

Also setzen wir unsere #MoselRadtour Richtung Konz fort.
