In the Republic of Karelia, a Russian region bordering Finland, there are more than 400 remote villages, where it is not so easy to get by car, as there are hardly any roads there. It’s usually about 40-50 people (mainly old ones) living there. These villages are completely isolated from the rest of the world: there are no supermarkets or grocery stores, some places don't even have stable electricity supply. The only hope for the residents of these villages are mobile shops — vans that deliver food, medicine and even utensils to remote corners of the Russian North.

En la República de Carelia, una región rusa que limita con Finlandia, hay más de 400 pueblos donde no es tan fácil llegar en coche porque faltan carreteras adecuadas. Pueden tener unos 40-50 habitantes (son gente mayor) y están completamente desconectados de todo el mundo. Steve and I saw the golden domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral shining from the ship as we cruised into Yalta, each time the Viking tour bus crept through the streets, and finally walked over to admire. The Cathedral was gorgeous inside but views of the typical and bright gold Russian Onion Domes were a knockout.
Briefly, who was Alexander Nevsky? Important since you'll see a cathedral named after him anywhere a Russian Orthodox cathedral can be seen. Alexander Nevsky played an important military role in Russia and his victories made him celebrated. In 1252, Nevsky was made Grand Prince of Vladimir (the supreme ruler of Russia) and the Russian Orthodox Church conferred sainthood upon his death.

Весной 1688 года юный царь Петр, натешившись «марсовыми забавами» в подмосковных селах Семеновское и Преображенское, вспомнил о «нептуновой потехе»: в амбаре села Измайлово он обнаружил английский бот и загорелся желанием строить корабли.
Голландский корабельный мастер Карстен Брант отремонтировал судно, и Петр получил возможность лавировать под парусом по реке Яузе и Просяному пруду. Но эти водоемы царю показались маловаты. Много лет спустя, в предисловии к Морскому Уставу он напишет:
« …охота стала от часу быть более, того для я стал проведовать, где более воды. То мне объявили Переяславское озеро, яко наибольшее, куда я, под образом обещания в Троицкий монастырь, у матери выпросился».
Так, втайне от матушки, в начале июля 1688 года шестнадцатилетний царь впервые посетил Плещеево озеро. Оно восхитило Петра своими размерами: по Писцовым книгам конца XVII века его площадь тогда составляла около 70 кв. км.
Возвратившись в Москву, он признался матери Наталье Кирилловне в истинной цели своей поездки в Переславль и стал просить ее «явно здесь двор и суды сделать». После настойчивых просьб разрешение было получено, и Петр поспешил в Переславль, где вместе с Карстеном Брантом начал подготовку к постройке судов.
На берегу реки Трубеж, впадающей в озеро, было выбрано место для судоверфи, на которой зимой 1689 года под руководством голландских корабелов и приступили к строительству кораблей.
К маю 1692 года на озере была подготовлена значительная флотилия, состоящая из различных по типу и величине судов. Кроме того, еще зимой Петр распорядился привезти в Переславль яхты и баркасы с Москва-реки.
1 мая был спущен на воду 30-ти пушечный фрегат «Марс» и состоялись маневры потешного флота во взаимодействии с пехотой и артиллерией, которые в августе царь повторил для приглашенного Московского двора. Залпы корабельных пушек и звон колоколов переславских храмов возвестили о рождении Российского военного флота.

Ropucha-class landing ship
The Ropucha (toad), or Project 775 class landing ships are classified in the Russian Navy as large landing craft (Bol'shoy Desantnyy Korabl). They were built in Poland in the Stocznia Północna shipyards, in Gdańsk. They are designed for beach landings and can carry a 450-ton cargo. The ships have both bow and stern doors for loading and unloading vehicles, and the 630 m² of vehicle deck stretches the length of the hull. Up to 25 armored personnel carriers can be embarked.

Это были незабываемые четыре дня в Карелии.
Горный парк Рускеала впечатлил своей изумрудной водой и расписными узорами скал, водопад Кивач своей мощью и одновременно изяществом (ещё и повезло запечатлеть нарушающий законы физики нырок форели).
В Карелии очень живописный лес - светло, много грибов и ягод и мягкие зелёные ковры из мха.
Самые сильные впечатления вызвали Ладожские шхеры - удивительные по форме и красоте небольшие островки с пёстрой палитрой растений, окружённые переливающимися на солнце водами Ладожского озера.
Но есть в Карелии и что-то невидимое и неосязаемое - какая-то особенная северная свежесть и «чёткость» воздуха, как будто перенастроил качество картинки с 1080 на 4К.
Карелия - по-настоящему самобытная и не похожая ни на что земля, которая однозначно притягивает и остаётся в сердце.
