New Caledonia: A colourful archipelago | WIDE

In New Caledonia, nature expresses itself in all its magnificence.

The archipelago orbits around a central axis: Grande Terre. The main island is bordered by the largest lagoon in the world.

But Grande Terre is not only fascinating by the intensity of its blue waters. It also possesses a very rich plant life. Nearly 3400 plant species have been found in New Caledonia and it is estimated that several hundred remain to be discovered.

Top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia

????

Spectacular natural scenery, jaw-droppingly beautiful islands and a unique fusion of French and Melanesian culture make New Caledonia one of the true jewels of the South Pacific. In New Caledonia, nature does not conceal its pleasures. Idyllic beaches border the largest lagoon in the world, and thick forests are home to more than 3,000 native species; the French archipelago is a promise of the exoticness. Here is our top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia!

???? The video features the following locations:

1. Upi Bay, Isle of Pines: The Isle of Pines is hardly lacking in magnificent bays, but Upi, if not the most visited, is undoubtedly the most spectacular. Discover its unique landscape on a traditional dugout canoe and follow the current to the stunning Isle of Pines, concealed between huge coral rocks that seem to float on the turquoise lagoon. Keep a lookout for turtles, rays and dolphins!

2. Amedee Lighthouse: No-one should leave Nouméa without visiting Amédée, the capital's most famous islet. It is home to an impressive 19th century metal lighthouse and a natural marine reserve known for its tropical fish and turtles. If you want to take a break from swimming and relaxing, the climb to the lighthouse offers an incredible 360° panorama over the lagoon and the coral reef!

3. Mouli Beach, Ouvea: Lined with stunning white sands, Mouli Beach is one of the best beaches in New Caledonia. Calm clear waters lap against the pure white sands, creating an ideal backdrop for a fun day out at the beach. Spend the day paddling and snorkelling, or set out on a walk along the beach’s long sandy stretches to admire the picturesque coastal destination in all its glory.

4. Natural Pool, Isle of Pines: The Oro Bay swimming pool is a natural aquarium, with translucent water and schools of multicoloured fish. This coral basin is sheltered from the currents, surrounded by New Caledonia pines and a beautiful white sand beach. It is easily accessible via a trail to the north of the Isle of Pines or from Upi Bay by dugout canoe.

5. Blue River Park, Great South: This is the most popular park in New Caledonia, undoubtedly the most incredible one. Located in the south of the Grande Terre, the Blue River Park promises a truly exotic scenery in a very unusual setting. Nature here has not changed for millions of years! It is also an extraordinary adventure playground with a wide range of activities!

6. Poe Lagoon, West Coast: The lagoon nature reserve, registered since 2008 as World Heritage by UNESCO, is an open-air aquarium where corals and colorful fish come together in a natural harmony. Diving enthusiasts will be amazed by the views in this clear water that has so much to offer. Kite surfers and windsurfers will be thrilled enjoying ideal conditions in the lagoon. For the bravest, discover the immensity of the lagoon from above with a skydiving jump!

7. Shabadran Terraces, Mare: To get to the site, visitors need to hike for around 2 and a half hours. Though a little strenuous (watch out for the very sharp coral!), the route offers stunning viewpoints over the coral plateaus and the island’s cliffs. When you finally reach the Shabadran terraces, you will understand why this unique white sandy beach has such an outstanding reputation. To discover with a guide!

8. Hen-shaped rocks, Eat Coast: It's impossible to miss the imposing black limestone rock that looms out of the waters of Hienghène Bay. Known as La Poule because of its striking resemblance to a hen, it has even influenced the legends of the local tribes, who made it the ancestral guardian of the region and one of the symbols of their country. To get a closer look and navigate around the surrounding Lindéralique rocks, a kayak is the way to go!

9. Giant Fern Park: The Giant Fern Park is made up of 4,500 hectares of protected rainforest. The Park also abounds with many species endemic to New Caledonia, most notably the iconic Cagou bird, which you can see in its natural environment. From a simple family outing through to thrills and adrenaline rush, the Giant Fern Park has a wide range of activities.

10. Heart of Voh: Immortalised by the famous photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, this striking feature has been shared around the world. The Heart of Voh was formed naturally by the surrounding mangrove. Best seen from the air, a microlight is the ultimate way to take in this memorable sight!

Explore the authentic East Coast of New Caledonia

????

Just like the rest of New Caledonia, the East Coast is abundant in incredible natural beauty. Lined with amazing coastal regions, peppered with fantastic diving spots and home to rich valleys perfect for hiking, it’s a corner of the archipelago that looks spectacular at any time of the year.
Much more than just a pretty face, the northern reaches of the East Coast also offer an opportunity to encounter and embrace the local Kanak culture. Enjoy an introduction to the arts and traditions of the Kanak people, visit a local village or delight your senses with the sights and sounds of a traditional show.

Top things to do on the East Coast:
- Kayak around the Hen and Sphinx: Situated in Hienghène Bay, the Hen and Sphinx are just two of the many black-stone rock formations scattered throughout the bay. Known locally as La Poule, the Hen earns its name from its chicken-like shape and a fascinating local legend, while the Sphinx’s resemblance to its Egyptian namesake is certainly hard to deny! While these intriguing rock formations are great to view from the shore, hiring a kayak and seeing them up close is another experience altogether. Paddle around these imposing natural figures and marvel in their sheer scale, with some rocks towering 60 metres above the waters below.

- Hike the Linderalique cliffs: If you’re looking for the perfect balance of breathtaking natural beauty and captivating culture, there’s no better place to start than Hienghène. Black-stone cliffs add a sense of drama to the landscape, while lush vegetation and the sparkling waters of the lagoon offer the perfect backdrop for swimming, snorkelling, hiking and a host of other activities.

- Ride the Ouaième Ferry: The last of its kind in New Caledonia, the Ouaième ferry acts as a link between the towns of Pouébo and Hienghène. Without a bridge to take vehicles to the opposing bank, cars and coaches are loaded on to a steel ferry and carried across the short stretch of water. Although the ferry ride may be quite short, the crossing offers some fantastic views of the native plantlife that lines the banks of the Ouaième River and out towards the lagoon. The ferry service is free to use and operates daily.

- See the beautiful Tao Waterfall: For those looking for the perfect excuse to cool down, soak up some great views and enjoy a touch of ethereal natural beauty, Tao Waterfall is just the ticket. Following a short drive north of Hienghène Village and a ferry crossing of the Ouaième River, an easy hiking trail (taking around 40 minutes to complete) will lead you from the main road to the waterfall. Enjoy a well earned dip on a warm sunny day or simply take some time to revel in the beauty of this incredible natural phenomenon.

- Explore Hienga Islet: Situated just 15 minutes off the coast, a visit to Hienga Islet is sure to leave you feeling worlds away from the daily grind. Currently uninhabited, the small island is surrounded by soft white sands and beautifully clear waters. Join a guided tour that takes you along the island’s underwater snorkelling trail and see the diverse marine species that call the area home, enjoy a stroll along the coast or simply take some time to sit back, relax and soak up the incredible scenery.

- Visit a local tribe: Local tribes will open their doors to you, providing an affordable, and unforgettable, accommodation option. While staying with a tribe, guests generally sleep in typical Melanesian huts set slightly apart from the family house. The clay or cement floor huts have mats for sleeping and a traditional hearth in the centre. Cooking and showering facilities are housed in separate buildings.

Kanak families welcoming you to their tribe will share their customs, their way of life and their know-how during your stay, allowing you to learn more about traditional life in New Caledonia. An experience quite unlike any other, the time spent getting to know the locals who call the archipelago home certainly won’t be forgotten any time soon. Look forward to activities such as traditional fishing, pandanus plaiting (making baskets, mats and more), preparing bougna (a traditional Kanak dish) and visiting yam plantations.

EXPLORING the UNSEEN Side of New Caledonia - What You Didn't Know!

Discovering the secret 8th continent. According to scientists this is the secret 8th continent of the world: Zealandia...and according to the BBC, they only recently discovered its existence. Somehow New Caledonia is hated by many vloggers and even though its an island paradise, filled with stunning beaches and the local people are some of the most friendly people you could meet.
New Caledonia is France’s Australia, where they copied the English and set up a prison colony in an island far away.
It is a small island, so Noumea the capital is not the same as a large capital city that we are used to.

West Coast, the Cowboy Country

????

The West Coast of the mainland (Grande Terre) shows off a great variety of scenery from its northern tip down to the area surrounding Nouméa. Characterised by both large spaces favouring cattle farming and a lagoon of stunning beauty, the West Coast is also host to a rich cultural heritage.
The famous heart of Voh: It is at the heart of a mangrove that the world-renowned Heart of Voh is located and whose reputation owes much to the clichés of photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand. A fascinating natural wonder to discover from above in an ultralight aircraft for an experience of a lifetime.
Hiking in the Deva Domain: the Deva Domain is a nature reserve located 2.5 hours drive north of Noumea. Hike its multiple tracks and explore the reserve’s lush landscapes, which border onto one the world’s most beautiful lagoons.
Horse riding, Western style: Looking for the perfect opportunity to put on your cowboy hat, jeans and leather boots, and set out on an old fashioned horse riding adventure? Follow some of New Caledonia’s bushmen on a day of cattle tracking. A true once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn about life on the land that you definitely won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Enjoy the spectacle of the broussards (Caledonian cowboys) driving cattle across wide open plains and discover just how important the horse is to the local cowboy culture. You can also enjoy a trot along the beach, explore expanses of mangroves at low tide or go for a refreshing swim in the nearby lagoon. If you happen to be an experienced rider, there’s nothing to stop you from soaring into a gallop as you discover these spectacular stretches of sand.
Fort Teremba or a living testimony of a rich history: You will be impressed by this historic vestige of French deportation and of the living conditions of convicts. In Fort Téremba, these buildings restored as they used to be will transport you to another era, that of life in this penitentiary. A visit laden with emotion for understanding a chapter in the history of New Caledonia.
