We are now in The Danube Valley and drive on the hungarian national road 1, from the border town of Komarno/Komarom to the main city of Györ. We are very close to the river and discover a nice region, with many forrests. Our destination, Györ, is is the most important city of northwest Hungary, the capital of Győr-Moson-Sopron County and Western Transdanubia region, and situated halfway between Budapest and Vienna. Esztergom is a city in northern Hungary, 46 kilometres (29 miles) northwest of the capital Budapest. It lies in Komárom-Esztergom county, on the right bank of the river Danube, which forms the border with Slovakia there.
Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the mid-13th century when King Béla IV of Hungary moved the royal seat to Buda.
Esztergom is the seat of the prímás (see Primate) of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, and the former seat of the Constitutional Court of Hungary. The city has the Keresztény Múzeum, the largest ecclesiastical collection in Hungary. Its cathedral, Esztergom Basilica is the largest church in Hungary.

Great Market Hall - It’s one of the coolest markets in the world, a massive indoor market hall. Inside you’ll find all things Hungarian food, from an immense array of sausages and famous Hungarian cured meats to loads of paprika, and Hungarian pickles. We had an amazing time walking around, discovering the ingredients that make Hungarian food unique.
Fakanal Etterem - This is a nice restaurant on the second floor of the Great Market Hall, the chef recommended the eggs with sausage and extra chilies. It was delicious and the best way to get this street food tour started. Price - 970 HUF ($3.20)
Belvárosi Disznótoros - Next we walked over to Belvárosi Disznótoros, a locally popular restaurant for all things Hungarian meat. Inside you’ll find meat paradise - sausages of all kinds, meats galore, and something I noticed that we had to try - Mangalica pig - a special hairy pig from Hungary. Total price - 5,348 HUF ($17.65)
Molnár's Kürtőskalács - You can not visit Hungary and not eat Kürtőskalács - it’s not the easiest word to pronounce. It’s unique, it’s delicious, and they have a number of different flavors and combinations of what you can order. It’s loved by locals and just about everyone in the world who visit Budapest. Price - 1,200 HUF ($3.96) each
Retró Lángos Büfé - If you’re looking for the real deal Hungarian street food in Budapest, look no further than Retró Lángos Büfé, and specifically the food called langos. It’s a type of fried bread, loaded with you choice of toppings. We got the original with cream, cheese, and onions. It was everything you could possibly want on a fried bread, and incredibly tasty. I can still feel the pillowy dough sinking into my teeth. Price - 800 HUF ($2.64)
Downtown Market Hall - Hold Street Market - Next we headed to Downtown Market Hall in Budapest, another old market hall.
A Séf Utcája - After walking around for a while we stopped to eat at A Séf Utcája, specializing in home-cooked styles Hungarian food classic recipes. Food was delicious again, full of paprika, bright, and tasty. Price - 1,900 HUF ($6.27)
Espresso Embassy - Coffeeshop Budapest - By this time we needed a coffee, so we stopped at Adam’s favorite coffee shop called Espresso Embassy. Some of the best coffee you’ll find in Budapest.
Rétisas Vendéglő - To end this ultimate street food tour in Budapest, Hungary, we went to a sit down restaurant called Rétisas Vendéglő. It was a local spot with some unique and huge deep fried dishes. Great place, amazing food, and by the end of the day, we were stuffed! 7,490 HUF ($24.72) - Total price for everything

One of the main landmarks of Hungary’s capital city is the Parlament, an imposing Neo-Gothic building located alongside the Danube on the banks of Pest. At the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog, within the northern tongue of Puszta, is the world famous wine growing region of Tokaj where the tradition of wine growing goes back several centuries and brought the area much prosperity. The southern Hungarian town of Kalocsa is located near the Danube and is a centre of paprika growing and folk culture that is well worth a visit. Hungary is a land of many faces, a glorious gem set in the heart of Europe.

Koniec roka 2022 sme strávili v meste Komárno na Slovenskej strane Dunaja, ale posledný deň v roku sme zavítali navštíviť druhú stranu Dunaja, kde je mesto Komárom už na Maďarskej strane. Most ponad rieku Dunaj je štátna hranica medzi Slovenskom a Maďarskom. V Komárne majú tiež svoju vojnovú pevnosť, avšak tu je veľmi zaujímavé historické centrum mesta a hlavne námestie Európy, kde nájdete postavené domy inšpirované typickou architektúrou pre každý štát v Európe. V Komárom je vojenských pevností viac a aj keď boli zatvorené okolie je veľmi zaujímavé pre ich monumentálnosť a pekné prostredie na prechádzku. Uži si video pre lepšiu predstavu.

Komarno Slovakia Nitriansky Kray
#KOMÁRNO (population 36,800) lies on the confluence of the Váh and Dunaj. It is one of the oldest towns in Slovakia. The medieval town lived its greatest prosperity in the 15th century when the rulers and court of Kingdom of Hungary frequently stayed in Komárno.
KOMÁRNO (population 36,800) is widely known as a town with rich cultural and social life. Every two years in April International Competition of Singers of F. Lehár, as well as the Lehár Festival staging musicals are held in the town. The water sports area and boathouse is next to the dead arm of the Váh. The visitors to the town are attracted by its thermal swimming pool. It exploits two hot springs with water temperature of 37 degrees of Celsius.
#HISTORY
The castle of Komárno became the main supporting point of the defensive system constructed against the Turks, after they occupied Buda and Esztergom in the years 1541-1543. The fort of Komárno is the largest bastion fortification in Central Europe. It originated in the years 1546-1557 by reconstruction of the 13th century castle.
Komárno obtained the privileges of free royal borough from Empress Maria Theresa in 1745.The production of ships has developed in Komárno and the produce of this town is respected now by experts all over the world. Komárno is the seat of the greatest producer of river boats in central Europe and its port is one of the biggest as well.
#MONUMENTS
You can start sightseeing in Komárno at the centre near the former Zichy Palace, which is one of the dominant features of the Námestie gen. J. Klapku square. The palace was restored in 1989 and one part serves as the Museum of Danubeland. Another secular monument situated in the square is the Neo-Renaissance town hall.
The Courtyard of Europe is the name of a unique project of the architects grouped in the studio Europa in Komárno. It is in fact the intention, now implemented, to build historic architecture typical for the individual regions of Europe in a styled form on a new square of Komárno. The common elements of the Courtyard of Europe and the historic core are the historic gates, each of which bears the name of one Hungarian ruler.

This is the fortress of Komárom in northern Hungary built officially as part of the outer ring of defences for Vienna in the second part of the nineteenth century but more, I suspect, as a result of the revolutions of 1848 in an effort to control an increasingly uneasy population in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although I was not able to enter due to the flooding on the Danube river which occured in early June 2013, one can nontheless get an idea of how large it is. It was completed towards the end of the nineteenth century. Although not much use as a fortress against the military, it did serve as a barracks for the Austro Hungarian and later Hungarian armies and was also used a 'secret' military ammunition store by the Soviet occupation forces. I believe that the Nazis may also have used it as a transit camp for Jews and Gypsies who were being deported out of Hungary in 1944.
The location of the site may have been used in the past. The Danube was the border of the Roman Empire with the nearby fortresses of Brigetio and Celamantia. Whilst fighting against border incursions the Emperor Marcus Aurelius must have been in the area - although then it was heavily forested and the Emperor Valentinianus died here on 17 November 375CE after defeating local tribes.
The area of the fortress found itself on the border again and was strengthened after the Mongol Invasion in 1424. Later it defended Austria against the Ottoman Empire but as the Ottomans pulled out of Hungary it found itself in the middle of the Habsburg territories.
The decision to built the fortress in its current form was taken in 1850 with three large fortresses. The other two are in Przemyśl (now Poland) and Petervarad (now Serbia).
At Komarom three large independent, but co-operating structures were built. Planners also aimed to be able to shelter 250,000 people inside their walls.
The city of Komárom was formerly a separate suburban village called Újszőny. In 1892 Komárom and Újszőny were connected with an iron bridge and in 1896 the two towns were united under the name Komárom.
The centre was split by the newly created border of Czechoslovakia in 1920 following the Treaty of Trianon in which Hungary lost two thirds of its territory creating a sizeable Hungarian minority in Slovakia and meant that the fortress was now on the border. The Czechoslovak (Slovak) part is now Komárno, Slovakia.
Komárom and Komárno are connected by two bridges: The iron bridge and a newer lifting bridge. The two towns used to be a border crossing between Czechoslovakia (later Slovakia) and Hungary, until both countries became part of the Schengen Area, resulting in all immigration and customs checks to be lifted on 12 December 2007.

Slovakia is definitely not on the top 10 country list when planning a trip to Europe. This was our view, before we decided to venture into Bratislava on our trip. We absolutely loved it, from the beautiful Old Town, Bratislava Castle, the UFO tower and lots of good food and drinks. We have put together some amazing tips that showcase the way we like to travel.
