Stift Klosterneuburg (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Stift Klosterneuburg in Austria.
Near to Vienna is a place where the sky meets with the earth. For almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of Emperor Karl The Sixth. In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly side that can b`e seen in the emperor’s private rooms which demonstrate the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth. The monastery’s most valuable possession and also one of the most impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in 1181. The large quantity of precious works of religious art and fascinating historic objects that date from the Habsburger Dynasty underline the feeling that the Stift Klosterneuburg is indeed a place where the sky meets with the earth!

Klosterneuburg Monastery , Austria 30.6.2022

Klosterneuburg Abbey or Monastery (German: Stift Klosterneuburg) is a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery of the Roman Catholic Church located in the town of Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria. Overlooking the Danube, just north of the Vienna city limits at the Leopoldsberg, the monastery was founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold III of Babenberg, the patron saint of Austria, and his second wife Agnes of Germany.[1] [2]

The abbey church, dedicated the Nativity of Mary (Maria Geburt), was consecrated in 1136 and remodeled in the Baroque style in the seventeenth century. The impressive monastery complex was mostly constructed between 1730 and 1834. Its foundations, including a castle tower and a Gothic chapel, date back to the twelfth century. Other older buildings still extant within the complex include the chapel of 1318 with Saint Leopold's tomb. From 1634 on, the Habsburg rulers had the facilities rebuilt in the Baroque style, continued by the architects Jakob Prandtauer and Donato Felice d'Allio. The plans to embellish the monastery on the scale of an Austrian Escorial were later resumed by the Neoclassical architect Joseph Kornhäusel, though only small parts were actually carried out. In 1879, the abbey church and monastery were restored according to plans by Friedrich von Schmidt, and the neo-Gothic twin steeples were erected.[1]

Klosterneuburg Monastery contains the Verduner Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun. Its three parts comprise 45 gilded copper plates modeled on Byzantine paragons, similar to the Shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral.[1] The monastery also contains a museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque sculpture and a gallery of paintings, including fifteen panel paintings by Rueland Frueauf from 1505, four Passion paintings from the backside of the Verduner Altar from 1331, and the Babenberg genealogical tree.[3]

K exponátům patří Verdunský oltář z roku 1181, díla Ruelanda Frueaufa mladšího a Mistra Albrechtova oltáře či gotická socha zvaná Klosterneuburská Madona (kolem r. 1300).

Klosterneuburg Monastery

More than 900 years old, the Klosterneuburg Monastery is one of the Vienna area's loveliest and most historically important centers of religious activity. It houses numerous prized works of religious art, including the Verdun Altar, crowns, and other ceremonial items. .
Blending high Gothic and Baroque architecture, the Monastery features distinctive green domes and towers that can be spotted from afar as you approach the hilly area on which it stands. It's also surrounded by centuries-old vineyards: a typical feature of the Austrian countryside. .
Founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III, the site has served as a residence of many Imperial dynasties, including the Habsburgs. Since it's served as an unusual combination of monastery and royal residence, it lends much insight into the religious and Imperial history of Austria. .
What to Do There: Make sure to see the Verdun Altar, a remarkably well-preserved piece of medieval art. Also see the onsite wine cellars and the former private rooms of Emperor Charles VI, which serve as the starting point for most guided tours. For more information on getting there, what to do and see at the monastery, see this page. .
