A tale of two towns (sorta): Wörth am Main

Following a series of massive floods, it was decided that a brand new Wörth am Main should be built on higher land. But things didn't go according to plan, and so Wörth is now, basically, two towns for the price of one.

This is an HD remake of an old video of mine, which also contained a small error. The town of Seligenstadt has a long history and contains the bones of some minor saints.

Germany: A visit to Miltenberg

Miltenberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named district and has a population of over 9,000.
The old town lies on the Main’s left bank on the left knee of the Mainviereck (Main Square) between the Spessart and Odenwald ranges. Since the Main riverbed in the Miltenberg area is relatively near the foot of the Odenwald, only a narrow strip of usable land is left, little over 150 meters in width,[2]:79 which in past centuries was time and again flooded by the Main. The historic centre, which stands on this land, often sustained considerable damage in these floods. Only in the 21st century efficient flood control measures, most of all a wall, have significantly reduced the adverse effects of these floods.
Some interesting sights are: the historic town centre with the Schnatterloch, the historic market square which served as a location for some scenes of the film The Spessart Inn (1958). Nearby are the Hotel Zum Riesen (one of Germany’s oldest inns, if not the oldest) and the old town hall. Miltenberg still has a total of around 150 half-timbered houses. Mildenburg (the local castle). It was the seat of the Oberamtmann, the Archbishop's local administrator until 1803. The Mainz Gate (Mainzer Tor), the Würzburg Gate (Würzburger Tor).

WALKING TOUR | The Miltenberg Town in Germany | June 2019 | Iam_Pingkit

Miltenberg - is a town in the Regierungsbezirk of Lower Franconia in Bavaria, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named district and has a population of over 9,000. Source :

The seat of a historic county in the old Electorate of Mainz, the town of Miltenberg is pressed against a bend in the River Main by the final eastern peaks of the Odenwald range.

The old town is 2.5 kilometres long but only a maximum 150 metres wide. And those slopes bank up to the south and bring a sense of spectacle to Miltenberg’s romantic alleys and squares.

The many half-timbered houses bear witness to Miltenberg’s historic wealth as a centre of commerce on the navigable Main River.

Some epoch-making figures have called in on Miltenberg, including two Holy Roman Emperors and Napoleon. What’s amazing is that the inn where they all stayed is still in business.

The Holsten Gate (Holstein Tor, later Holstentor) is a city gate marking off the western boundary of the old center of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.
Built in 1464, the Brick Gothic construction is one of the relics of Lübeck's medieval city fortifications and one of two remaining city gates, the other being the Citadel Gate.
Known for its two-round towers and arched entrance, it is regarded today as a symbol of the city.
Together with the old city centre (Altstadt) of Lübeck it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The Holsten Gate is composed of a south tower, a north tower and a central building.
It has four floors, except for the ground floor of the central block, where the gate's passageway is located.
The side facing west (away from the city) is called the field side, the side facing the city the city side.
The two towers and the central block appear as one construction when viewed from the city side.
On the field side, the three units can be clearly differentiated.
Here the two towers form semicircles which at their widest point extend 3.5 metres beyond the central block.
The towers have conical roofs; the central block has a pediment.
In 1950 the Holsten Gate again served as a museum, this time for municipal history.
Relics from historic Lübeck were presented, the development of medieval Lübeck was shown using models and pictures, and models of the ships of the Hanseatic League and the flagship Eagle of Lübeck were exhibited.
The two monumental iron statues of reclining lions placed in an area in front of the Holsten Gate designed by Harry Maasz date from 1823 and are unsigned.
They are attributed to Christian Daniel Rauch and may possibly have been made with the collaboration of a member of Rauch's workshop, Th. Kalide (1801-1863).
One lion is asleep, the other is awake and attentively regards the other.
They were originally placed in front of the house built in 1840 by the Lübeck merchant and art collector John Daniel Jacobj (1798-1847) at Große Petersgrube 18.
In 1873 they were placed in front of the Hotel Stadt Hamburg am Klingenberg until its destruction in 1942 during World War II, and only later in front of the Holsten Gate.
They are complemented by a bronze statue on the other side of the street, the Striding Antilope, by the sculptor Fritz Behn.

10 Things to do in Bergmannkiez - Berlin

Bergmannkiez is in the western part of Kreuzberg around the lovely Bergmannstrasse between Victoria Park and Südstern.

Besides being one of the most beautiful kiez in town, it offers a mix of restaurants, cafes, trinket sales, vintage and small shops, i.e. we hardly find any big brands here!

The residential area around Bergmannstrasse is characterized by a beautifully preserved architecture. This area was one of the first in the district of Kreuzberg to gentrify itself throughout the 90s and 2000s. It is certainly not difficult to deduce the reason. So today it is less “hippie” and a little more “upmarket” than it used to be. Even so, she’s still a charm!

Watch the video and find out 10 things to do in Bergmannkiez!
