The second part of my round trip around beautiful Estonian countryside, this time from Narva to the south into the Tarto and then west all way to the Pärnu. There were lots of amazing nature trails and parks, and also those familiar castle ruins that can basically be seen everywhere in this country. And I also found a proper soviet hanging bridge, that actually was in better shape than expected.

Small winter trip to Eastern Estonia. Visited Saka and Mäetaguse manors, Pühtitsa convent and Selisoo bog trail.
Ida-Viru County, or Ida-Virumaa, is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is the most north-eastern part of the country. The county contains large deposits of oil shale - the main mineral mined in Estonia. As oil shale is used in thermal power plants, the earth in Ida-Viru contains most of Estonia's energy resources. The capital of the county is the town of Jõhvi which is administratively united with the Jõhvi Parish.
The Pühtitsa Dormition Convent (Kuremäe Convent), located in the centre of Kuremäe, was established in 1891, and is the only functioning Russian Orthodox nunnery in Estonia. In ancient times, a sacred place of the Estonians was located here and a sacrificial spring was at the foot of the hill. The spring is knows as a “holy spring” today for the curative powers of its water. One can also bathe in the refreshing water. The convent gates are open and you can walk around and observe convent life. Those who are more interested in the life and history of the convent can order a tour from the nuns, in order to see the various churches in the convent complex that are otherwise closed to the public.

Пюхтица (Pühtitsa) по-эстонски означает «святое место». Основан в 1891 году. Монастырь никогда не закрывался.

The Medieval Old Town of TALLINN, ESTONIA ???????? // #EE18 ep.1
Hey guys! This is the first video from my short trip to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. I jetted off straight after my 30th birthday to Riga in Latvia (since the flights were a lot cheaper!) and then took a 4 hour ride on a luxury coach from there to Tallinn.
The old town of Tallinn is a beautifully preserved and fairly compact walled city with cobbled streets dating back to the middle ages. As a country, Estonia has been tossed around between different empires including the Danish Vikings and Soviet Russians which give it something of a mixed Baltic/Nordic/post-Soviet identity today.
Today the Old Town is, sadly, somewhat deserted by the Estonian people and its medieval character is exploited mainly for tourism and stag weekends, as Estonia goes through a boom of technology, entrepeneurialism and creativity, (they invented Skype!) sending the wider city up in chrome skyscrapers and into the 21st century.
