Hungary (Hungarian: Magyarország) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Spanning 93,030 square kilometres (35,920 sq mi) of the Carpathian Basin, it is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Romania to the east and southeast, Serbia to the south, Croatia and Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west. Hungary has a population of 10 million, mostly ethnic Hungarians and a significant Romani minority. Hungarian, the official language, is the world's most widely spoken Uralic language, and among the few non-Indo-European languages widely spoken in Europe. Budapest is the country's capital and largest city; other major urban areas include Debrecen, Szeged, Miskolc, Pécs, and Győr.

The territory of present-day Hungary has for centuries been a crossroads for various peoples, including Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Huns, West Slavs and the Avars. The foundations of the Hungarian state were established in the late ninth century AD with the conquest of the Carpathian Basin by Hungarian grand prince Árpád. His great-grandson Stephen I ascended the throne in 1000, converting his realm to a Christian kingdom. By the 12th century, Hungary became a regional power, reaching its cultural and political height in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, it was partially occupied by the Ottoman Empire (1541–1699). Hungary came under Habsburg rule at the turn of the 18th century, later joining with the Austrian Empire to form Austria-Hungary, a major power into the early 20th century.

Austria-Hungary collapsed after World War I, and the subsequent Treaty of Trianon established Hungary's current borders, resulting in the loss of 71% of its territory, 58% of its population, and 32% of ethnic Hungarians. Postwar Hungary became a satellite state of the Soviet Union, leading to the establishment of the Hungarian People's Republic. The removal of Hungary's border fence with Austria accelerated the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, and subsequently the Soviet Union. On 23 October 1989, Hungary became a democratic parliamentary republic. Hungary joined the European Union in 2004 and has been part of the Schengen Area since 2007.

Sightseeing around Kecskemét

Once school finished in Debrecen, we travelled south and west for a week's holiday (szabadság). For the first two days we were based at famous city of Kecskemét (híres város as the Petőfi Sándor poem says).

Like many towns in the region (such as Kiskunfélegyháza also on this clip) it has beautifully coloured tiled roofs, extensive public art works, and human scaled buildings and outdoor spaces.
The clip also includes Csongrád (where we finally saw some swallows (fecske) – which are less common with the mosquito control) and Dunaföldvár which was my first view of the Danube this trip.

I've pulled the Kurultáj clips out into their own video ( for those with a limited patience for horses and yurts.

Szeged is the third largest city of Hungary, the largest city and regional centre of the Southern Great Plain and the county town of Csongrád county. The University of Szeged is one of the most distinguished universities in Hungary.

The famous Open Air Plays of Szeged are one of the main attractions; which are held every summer celebrated as the Day of the city on May 21.

The name Szeged might come from an old Hungarian word for corner (szeg), pointing to the turn of the river Tisza that flows through the city. Others say it derives from the Hungarian word sziget which means 'island'. Others still contend that szeg means 'dark blond' (sötétszőkés) -- a reference to the color of the water where the rivers Tisza and Maros merge.

Szeged is known as the home of paprika, a spice made from dried, powdered capsicum fruits. Paprika arrived in Hungary in the second half of the 16th century as an ornamental plant. About 100 years later the plant was cultivated as a herb, and paprika as we know it. Szeged is also famous for their Szekelygulyas, a goulash made with pork, sauerkraut and sour cream. And also famous for their Halászlé, fish soup made of carp and catfish.

The citizens of Szeged played an important part in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Lajos Kossuth delivered his famous speech here. Szeged was the last seat of the revolutionary government in July 1849. The Habsburg rulers punished the leaders of the town, but later Szeged began to prosper again, the railway reached it in 1854, and the town got its free royal town status back in 1860.

The Szeged Symphony Orchestra (Szegedi Szimfonikus Zenekar) gives regular concerts at the Szegedi Nemzeti Színház.

Szeged is situated near the southern border of Hungary, just to the south of the mouth of the Maros River, on both banks of the Tisza River. Due to the high numbers of sunstroke reported annually, Szeged is often called 'city of the sun'.

Kistelek is a town in Csongrád county, in the Southern Great Plain region of southern Hungary.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Csongrád is the name of an administrative county in southern Hungary, on the both sides of the river Tisza, on the border with Serbia and Romania. It shares borders with the Hungarian counties Bács-Kiskun, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Békés. The administrative centre of Csongrád county is Szeged. The county is also part of the Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa euroregion.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
The area of Csongrád County is flat. It has a high number of sunshine hours and excellent soil, which makes it the most important agricultural area of Hungary. Its most famous products are paprika from Szeged and onion from Makó, but grain, vegetables and fruits are also significant. Half of the onion, paprika and vegetables produced in Hungary are from Csongrád. The county is also rich in oil and natural gas.

Hungarian State Railways (Hungarian: Magyar Államvasutak or MÁV) is the Hungarian national railway company, with divisions MÁV START Zrt. (passenger transport), MÁV-Gépészet Zrt. (maintenance) and MÁV-Trakció Zrt.. The MÁV Cargo Zrt (freight transport) is sold for ÖBB. The head office is in Budapest.

In Budapest, the three main railway stations are the Eastern (Keleti), Western (Nyugati) and Southern (Déli), with other outlying stations like Kelenföld. Of the three, the Southern is the most modern but the Eastern and the Western are more decorative and architecturally interesting.

Other important railway stations countrywide include Szolnok (the most important railway intersection outside Budapest), Tiszai Railway Station in Miskolc and the stations of Pécs, Győr, Debrecen, Szeged and Székesfehérvár.

The only city with an underground railway system is Budapest with its Metro.

In Budapest there is also a suburban rail service in and around the city, operated under the name HÉV.
