Ironing The Land - Railways In A Free State

6 part series documenting the building of Ireland's railways.
First broadcast by RTÉ in 1999.

Presented by Dick Warner.

Episode 5: Railways In A Free State

Ireland 4 - Dublin, Malahide and everything else

This was the rest of the footage filmed on the East Coast. We took a train (then an adorable trolley) to Malahide Castle, which was owned by the Talbots. We weren't allowed to film inside, but I snuck a quick shot anyway (don't tell). There's a ghost that likes when you knock on his door. I loved the gardens and the butterfly house.

info on Malahide

St. Audoen's Church is right in the heart of Dublin and has a nice museum.

The Long Room is found at Trinity College where you can also see the Book of Kells. Fascinating History!

We wandered around St. Stephen's Green (yes, we went in the fall - it was lovely!), then went to Glasnevin cemetery.

We also went to St. Michen's Church to see the mummies, but filming was strictly forbidden. Highly recommended, though!

DART Train in IRELAND

DART Train in IRELAND

The Dublin Area Rapid Transit system (stylised as DART) is an electrified commuter rail railway network serving the coastline and city centre of Dublin. The service makes up the core of Dublin's suburban railway network, stretching from Greystones, County Wicklow, in the south to Howth and Malahide in north County Dublin. The DART serves 31 stations and consists of 53 route kilometres of electrified railway (46 km double track, 7 km single), and carries in the region of 20 million passengers per year.

The DART system was established by Córas Iompair Éireann in 1984 to replace an ageing fleet of diesel-powered locomotives. Since 1987 the service is operated by Iarnród Éireann, Ireland's national rail operator. Contemporary rolling stock on the DART network is powered by 1500 V DC overhead lines and uses the Irish 1,600 mm gauge.

Howth DART station (/ˈhoʊθ/ HOHTH; Irish: Stáisiún Bhinn Éadair), is a railway station in Fingal, Ireland that serves Howth village and one side of Howth Head.

History
The Station opened on 30 May 1847, The Howth tram ran between here and Sutton railway station (all the way around Howth Head) until 1959. Within the station buildings (although not accessible from the platforms) are a bar and restaurant and a convenience store.

Operations
Howth is a two-platform terminal station. Due to the lack of a run-round or turntable facility, on the rare occasion that a locomotive-hauled train arrives (such as on a railtour), a second locomotive must follow the train light engine from Dublin to haul the train back from Howth.

Connolly station (Irish: Stáisiún Uí Chonghaile) or Dublin Connolly is the busiest railway station in Dublin and Ireland, and is a focal point in the Irish route network. On the North side of the River Liffey, it provides InterCity, Enterprise and commuter services to the north, north-west, south-east and south-west. The North-South Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Luas light rail services also pass through the station. The station offices are the headquarters of Irish Rail, Iarnród Éireann. Opened in 1844 as Dublin Station, the ornate facade has a distinctive Italianate tower at its centre.

Iarnród Éireann (English: Irish Rail) is the national railway system
operator of Ireland. Established on 2 February 1987, it is a subsidiary of Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). It operates all internal intercity, commuter and freight railway services in the Republic of Ireland, and, jointly with Northern Ireland Railways, the Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast. In 2009, Iarnród Éireann carried 38.8 million passengers, down from 43.3 million in 2008.

At the time of its establishment Iarnród Éireann referred to itself as Irish Rail, and introduced the four rails IR logo. The company gradually brought the Irish form of its name to the fore, ultimately introducing IÉ corporate branding and logo in 1994. The Irish word iarnród (alternately rendered bóthar iarainn) translates into English as iron road, or railway. While the name Irish Rail did not appear in that logo, it remained part of the official company name (Iarnród Éireann – Irish Rail) and reappeared in the new bi-lingual logo introduced in 2013.

The 2700 and 2750 Classes (nicknamed Sparrows [Spanish Arrows]) were two related types of diesel multiple unit operated by Iarnród Éireann. The 2700 Class units were 2-car sets; 25 cars were built by GEC Alsthom in 1997 and 1998, and began entering service in December 1998. Each car weighed 38 long tons (39 t; 43 short tons) and was fitted with a 350 hp (260 kW) underfloor Cummins engine with a maximum service speed of 110 km/h (68 mph).

From July 2004 to April 2005 they were used in six-piece sets on the Dublin-Rosslare InterCity services, before being replaced by newer units. The entire class was then based in Limerick, with one set outbased in Ballina to operate the Ballina - Manulla Junction shuttle, while it also operated an Athlone - Galway service on Fridays. A further set operated morning and evening Athenry - Galway commuter services during its layover from Limerick - Galway services. Otherwise the class operated all services from Limerick (save direct Limerick-Heuston Station trains) and services from Limerick Junction to Waterford.

They were capable of operation in consists of up to 10 cars. In addition to the 2-car units, two single car units were constructed. These units were classed as 2750 Class, and had a cab at each end so that they could operate either singly or as part of a set.

Even numbered cars had 62 seats while odd numbered cars contained 55 seats and a toilet. There were some exceptions however; the two 2750 Class units had 53 seats each, due to having cabs at both ends, while 2719 and 2721 had 50 seats each and included a bicycle storage area. The original black and orange Arrow livery was replaced by the newly introduced Commuter livery in 2004, upon the start of the sectorisation of Iarnród Éireann's operations.

In 2010, Iarnród Éireann began major overhauls of the 2700 and 2750 Classes, the most prominent feature of which was the removal of the end gangways, which had been unused for some time. This coincided with the addition of a new livery based on the 22000 Class colour scheme.

2716 suffered collision damage on 3 June 2000. Following repairs, it was coupled with 2609, part of the Mitsui 2600 class.

In July 2012, the majority of the class was withdrawn and put into storage; by September 2012 the entire fleet had been withdrawn and was put up for sale. As of 2018, the entire 2700 fleet remains decommissioned at Inchicore Works in Dublin and in the sheds at Kent Station Cork.

In October 2017, Irish Rail put out to tender the reactivation and refurbishment of 10 2700 sets, which were due to re-enter service in early 2019 in order to free up ICR sets for busier Dublin area services. However, this plan was cancelled in 2018.

Westport (Irish: Cathair na Mart, meaning city of the beef cattle, historically anglicised as Cahernamart) is a town in County Mayo in Ireland. It is at the south-east corner of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of Ireland. Westport is a popular tourist destination and scores highly for quality of life. It won the Irish Tidy Towns Competition three times in 2001, 2006 and 2008. In 2012 it won the Best Place to Live in Ireland competition run by The Irish Times.

The design for the town was commissioned in the 1780s by the John Browne of the nearby stately home, Westport House, as a place for his workers and tenants to live. John Browne cleared the original village of Cahernamart, that had 700 inhabitants, to make way for his gardens at Westport House.

The current town centre was originally designed by William Leeson in 1780, in the Georgian architectural style. Its layout follows the medieval principles of urban design introduced by the Normans in the 13th century. A particular feature is the incorporation of the river into the composition, contained for two blocks by low stone walls producing, on each side of the river, tree lined promenades (The Mall) with several stone bridges over the river Carrow Beg.

The famous pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, known locally as the Reek, lies some 10 km west of the town near the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. The mountain forms the backdrop to the town.

The Iarnród Éireann (IE) 201 Class locomotives are the newest and most powerful diesel locomotives operating in Ireland, and were built between 1994 and 1995 by General Motors. They are model type JT42HCW, fitted with an EMD 12-710G3B engine of 3200 hp, weigh 108.862 tonnes and have a maximum speed of 164 km/h (102 mph). A freight version, the EMD Series 66, with the same engine is used on privately operated European mainline freight duties.

By the early 1990s, the locomotives operating passenger services in Ireland were becoming increasingly obsolete, with the newest type in service being the 071 Class introduced in 1976. The economic boom in Ireland in the mid-1990s allowed Iarnród Éireann to begin significant investment in the infrastructure of the railways, which began with an order for 32 brand new express locomotives from GM-EMD. Northern Ireland Railways also purchased two. The first were delivered in 1994, with deliveries continuing until 1995.

To allow clearance tests and driver training to commence in advance of the delivery of the main order of 201s, it was decided to transport the first locomotive, number 201, to Dublin by air. An Antonov An-124 was used to transport the locomotive from London, Ontario to Dublin Airport, arriving on 9 June 1994. The first light-engine test run operated from Inchicore works to Kildare on the 14th. Unfortunately, the locomotives have had a chequered service history.
