Abha is the capital city of Aseer Province near the Red Sea in southwest Saudi Arabia. It’s known for the craggy mountains of Aseer National Park, which is home to birds, dense juniper forests, and the towering Jabal Soodah peak. At the heart of downtown Abha is the restored mud-walled Shada Castle, now a handicrafts museum. Nearby, the Al-Muftaha district has stone houses and a weekly market with crafts and curios.

In this episode of Living the Jo Life, we visit Abha, Saudi Arabia – a hidden gem in the heart of the Asir Region! Nestled amidst stunning mountainous landscapes, Abha offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. One of the standout locations of Abha is its alpine-inspired High City, located at an altitude of over 2,200 meters above sea level. Here, we were treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lush greenery, and vibrant valleys. Many of the restaurants and cafes also have views of Abha city. In true Living the Jo Life style, we explored the vibrant Tuesday market in Abha and the gold market in neighboring Khamis Mushait. We met so many lovely and hospitable Saudi people while shopping at the market. Some even took us shopping. Abha is known for its breathtaking natural scenery, with terraced landscapes and tall mountains, where you can encounter wild baboons along the side of the road. A short drive from Abha will take you to the historic Rijal Alma village, a tentative UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, we explored traditional architecture and experienced the timeless charm of Saudi Arabian culture. Not far from the historic village, we visited a lovely local honey farm, where we enjoyed some of the best honey we've ever tasted. We finished the day exploring the local flavors of Saudi Arabian cuisine at a multi-storey restaurant that was beautifully decorated in traditional Saudi Arabian style. The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia has always been a hidden treasure and it's only recently that this beautiful country has opened its doors for tourists with open arms. Abha in Saudi Arabia is where the cool mist intertwines with the majestic towering mountains. So our Editor, Kamiya Jani took this opportunity to explore the serene and majestic destination. This is definitely a must visit place in winter, but also a wonderland in summer. From the Al Muftaha village to Rijal Almaa, every place has its own beauty and story behind it.
We indulged in Aseeri food from Mubtatha to having yummy Indomie noodles, and even plucking and eating fresh juicy grapes and sipping on hot Gahva, my taste buds literally loved all of Abha’s food!
The people welcomed me with their heart warming smiles and made me feel so comfortable that the place felt like home. The video explores this beautiful destination covering all the major spots and is the perfect guide for you to enjoy your visit in Abha, Saudi Arabia.

Khamis Mushayt or Khamis Mushait (Arabic: خميس مشيط, Ḫamīs Mušayṭ) is a city in south-west Saudi Arabia, located east of Abha, the provincial seat of the Asir province, 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) 650 nautical miles from Dhahran and 884 kilometres (549 mi) from the national capital of Riyadh. It is the capital of the Shahran tribe in the Asir region. It is fifth-largest city in Saudi Arabia after Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca and Medina, with an estimated population of 1,353,000 as of 2017.

Faifa in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia
A detailed video of the drive up to and experience of Faifa in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia.
Faifa, often written as Fayfa or even Fifa, is a refreshing lush green hill station built on mountain slopes with cool temperatures. I must admit not many people know about it even in Saudi Arabia. After living here for six years, I had never heard about it until I started planning this trip.
Driving from Jazan city, Faifa is 100 kms with an elevation gain of 1500m, more than 1000 meters in the last 30 kms to the top. Steep switch backs where one cannot and should not divert their concentration from driving to the views takes one to the hill station. Though Al Faifa looks like a single mountain, it is actually several hills wrapped around each other. At the top as I got out of my car, the first thing I noticed was the cool fresh air. Second was the green mountains all around me. From the top, one can notice the steep roads that connect the dwellings on these hills.
The mountains of Faifa are a part of the Sarawat range, one that runs parallel to the Red Sea coast and passes through the provinces of Hejaz, Aseer and Jazan (including Faifa) into Yemen. Though the range is mostly rocky and volcanic, it is alive and fertile at Faifa. The inhabitants of these slopes rely on its fertile soil to grow fruits, vegetables and even coffee. Some of these plants and its fruits can be found at the road side. The mountains receive sufficient rain fall in the monsoon season due to their location in the South, roughly 10 kms from Yemen border.
Faifa is also known to produce quality honey. Here at Faifa one can visit the traditional Souq such as the Nafi’a and Haqou markets where local, mostly organic products are available. The hill station is popular for its agricultural terraces and its heritage cylindrical houses.
